Pentax 645Z next model

Well, the A7R4 has more MP on a smaller surface. So at least in theory would have significantly better resolution than a 50MP MF sensor. The MF sensor might have other advantages, but theoretical resolving capability wouldn't be one of them.

Relative to Pentax, would the existing lenses be able to keep up with a 150MP sensor? If not, what's the point? Pentax pretty clearly doesn't have the resources to build a whole new set of MF lenses that would only sell in very small quantities.

Why doesn't Pentax design a Limited lens for 645?

I suspect you're probably pretty typical relative to the early adopters. And at that point, Pentax probably made a good profit on the 645z.

But now they have to compete with Fuji, plus increasingly high-res options on full frame. So a lot more competition than when they first came out. Plus the Fuji people can use pretty much all the Pentax lenses(though not all with AF).

It's pretty hard to see a good way forward for a company the size of Pentax in MF. Go up market and compete with Phase One and Hassleblad? Maybe, but not sure a Limited lens fits in there.

Well, likely for the same reason they haven't released any new 645 lenses in years. They have limited R&D budget, and the ROI on 645 lenses isn't good enough for them to devote money there rather than other places. I wish this were not the case, but pretty hard to come to any other conclusion.
How many here own one or both of the expensive 28-45 or 90? How many more of those could you justify investing in vs older 645 or 67 lenses that give you >90% of the same performance. Not very many I'd bet. And Pentax execs can see everyone making that same calculation.

This is exactly it. I don't think Pentax could have come in at this point and competed in the mirrorless space.

As far as people testing the camera, my understanding is that at least two of the US Pentax ambassadors have been using it. I'd expect we'll see comments from them once Pentax decides to lift that embargo.

Pentax must go full frame with the 645 system.

It's a nice idea, but I just don't see the ROI being there. The revenue side of things will be squeezed by Fuji, Hassleblad and Phase One, plus high megapixel FF cameras with pixelshift. So I doubt they'd sell many.

And the cost side will be huge. Not just the sensor itself, but the R&D, support, and need for new lenses. Someone buying a $30000 camera isn't going to accept having to send it to Japan for a month for repairs. Nor would most pros be OK with 30+ year old 6x7 and FF645 film lenses as the only choices.

I like my 645z. But I'm an amateur who sells a few prints here and there. The only reason I have one is that I got a good deal on the body and lenses are cheap. No way I or others like me could justify the cost of an FF645 body. So while you might gain a few folks, going way up market would really limit you to only serious pros with specific needs, pretty much where Phase One is now. That's not a very big market, and would require a big investment to be in.

Well, I was going to try to post a pic of the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction taken with the 645z. But the 300 A*, while a fantastic lens, just doesn't have enough reach to pick out the details. So instead, here's the sunset from Monday, taken while I was waiting and dialing in the focus.

Wish Pentax would build an ultra wide 645 lens without SR.

The 5dsr is a nice camera and certainly would give you more lens choice. But for landscape photos with a lot of dynamic range and shadows, the 645z sensor crushes it. For that matter, the K-1, A7R4 or D850 would be better...the Sony sensors are just better on that front than the older Canon ones.

As far as an ultra wide lens for the 645z, I'm certainly not unhappy with my 28-45. It's a very good lens. Would I rather have had a slightly smaller 20-25 prime that was not IS, and was WR/AW? Yes, probably, I even would have been fine with MF, since that's mostly what I use for landscape anyway. I probably would have preferred to get one of the 25s, but they were just too rare and expensive for me to justify.
I'm not too concerned about the fact that the 28-45 is only for the smaller MF sensor. The 645Z is plenty of camera for my needs. If Pentax ever went to the larger size sensor(which I'm not sure is too likely) the camera would probably be too expensive for me to justify anyway.

With pixel shift type technologies getting more common and better, the market for MF is getting squeezed at the lower end.
There may be room for a Pentax 645 100MP with SR that could be used to produce really large and detailed files. Otherwise, I'm having a hard time see where they would slot something in, given the available sensors.

The issue then would be lenses...there's not too many modern lenses to go with such a body. Would the perception still be that Fuji is a better choice if you're spending that kind of money?

I don't think this is specific to the photo industry. Big trade shows generally are starting to be seen as a poor investment. COVID is just accelerating that.

Seems roughly correct.

I tend not to mess with #1, but rather set the body and/or lens to MF. I find that easier to remember when I want to switch back to AF.

[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

The question of the Sigma or Tamron 150-600, or perhaps the upcoming Nikon Z 200-600, may be what decides for me on the K3-3.
I've been into wildlife lately, and frankly, the idea of having more reach than the 150-450 is appealing. Having faster tracking autofocus would be helpful. But having a modern long zoom would as well. Agree that a Pentax branded version of the Tamron 150-600 G2 would be very appealing to go along with the K3-3. But I'd be surprised, as it would cut into 150-450 sales.

Looks interesting. I'd have traded the touchscreen for a pivoting one. And could kind of care less about 4K, but others will find it interesting that Pentax is now in the video game.

The DOF bracketing sounds interesting, and agree, in theory the focus looks potentially a lot improved. Guess we'll see. I'd like to have eye rather than face detect on focus.

Are folks using PEF or DNG raw files out of the 645z? I've always used DNG out of all the Pentax cameras. Is there a reason to use PEF(other than Pixelshift processing with the Pentax software, which isn't a thing with the 645)?

There's definitely Fuji MF users out there buying Pentax lenses to use with an adapter. The Fuji lenses are spendy, so it's an easy way for them to greatly expand their options.

Well, it's a bit of a cliched subject, and unfortunately, the smoke from the fires in CA made the mountain view not as clear as it could be. But I'm reasonably happy with how this turned out (thank you Dehaze function in LR). 645Z and 28-45.

The Fuji lenses are nice, but vastly more expensive than most of the options for Pentax. And probably not enough better to justify the expense.

If Pentax could add IBIS, they'd likely also be able to add pixel-shift. Those two things alone would be a big upgrade. Though I'd wonder if they also would require making the body even bigger. There's only 2 stabilized lenses for Pentax, and other companies have been able to make body and lens stabilization work, so I'm not worried about that.

I'd rather see IBIS and prices hold steady or modestly increase than a big increase and 100MP sensor.

Yeah, I'd be pretty surprised if they were sitting on it because they were worried about running out. While it might annoy a few folks, it's the sort of problem Pentax would be pretty happy to have.

I'm not sure the shipped unit numbers are that meaningful. It really comes down to profit. Are they making enough to keep the Pentax line running relative to other investments they could make with that capital?
Leica is probably even further down the list in terms of shipped units. But it doesn't seem likely their camera business is going away.

I don't think this is the reason...they managed to put a flippy screen in the KP, which is a fair bit smaller than I think what this is planned to be, and the KP is built to a pretty high standard. Seems to me there are other reasons driving this.

Sony just launched an FF camera in a body that's smaller than most APSC cameras. Personally I think the ergonomics are probably terrible, but going mirrorless would mean that the body and weight could be smaller than the equivalent SLR, even with a sensor larger than the 645Z.

At the risk of pulverizing a deceased equine....

Pentax can do whatever they want. I don't think the tilt screen is the same as a prism or the Leica rangefinder. Nor is having to use a phone the same as something already integrated into the camera. Pentax has put the screens on other models. And other camera makers have put them on other DSLR cameras that are targeted at the same market/use. See Nikon D500. So IMO, kind of a strange decision by Pentax.

But I've certainly accepted that it won't have one. Either the rest of the new functionality is going to be enough to get me to upgrade from my KP, or it isn't. Guess we'll hopefully see pretty soon.
