pentax 20-40 owners: zoom ring movement

I never had that problem, actually mines feels a little loose. It could be you need to "work-it" a little bit meaning turning the zoom ring back and forth for a while to break it in ?

Pentax K-3 III design

First of all I got my heart set on this camera once the price goes down a little to replace my beloved K-5 IIs which is getting a little long in tooth. with that said,

Here is what I like:
a) viewfinder focus points cover a wide amount of the viewfinder and are not cluttered in the middle
b) Nice an bright magnified viewfinder, although I never complained about the VF on my K-5
c) Nice sounding shutter
d) Modern navigating menu
c) Touch screen AF
d) 12 fps
e) Better AF
f) 4k video although rather limited
g) Decent battery life
h) higher ISO, better shake reduction
j) Dual card slots
k) Joystick

What I don't like or find questionable:
a) Why have touch screen if you have all these new buttons ?
b) The over-done customizable options will keep you reading the manual instead of taking pictures(believe me, the Canon 7D vs. 1 tried the same thing and it flopped)
c) User1 - User5 my God unless you have the camera permanently attached to your hip why do you need all of these options ?? 3 would have been enough.
d) The camera is bigger and heavier than the k5 and k7
e) No pop-up flash, or astro-tracer ?
f) No flippy screen
g) No way to lock the Aperture or Shutter speed as far as I know ?
h) The card slots support different USB's, WTF ???
i) Need to get a new battery grip
k) The outrageous PRICE !
L) Tiny Top LCD
M) Ridiculous Maximum ISO is out of this world(OOTW) !

What would you have done differently on the new K-3 III ?. The upgrade is good, but could have been better in my opinion...

New or used what do you prefer?

I would definitely rather buy new than Used, so at least I don't have to bite my finger-nails that comes with buying used. Of course there is no guarantee that new equipment is going to work as it should, but that's where the manufacturer's warranty comes in. New equipment usually comes with a manual, a nice box, and at least a 1 year Warranty. However my not-so-deep pockets have forced me to buy Used most of the time. I would say that 75% of my Pentax equipment was purchased Used.

I usually try to test all my just bought equipment as soon as it comes out of the box. Meaning I go through it with a fine-tooth comb making sure all functions work as they should. With 'new' equipment you usually have an entire year to do this. With Used equipment this is not always possible because the return policy is a lot shorter. Sometimes/often you only have 3 months to test the equipment before you can get a full refund if things don't work out. This is what I hate about buying used. On the other hand, you save a lot of money. Sometimes hundreds of dollars. If you are lucky enough to get a good copy with minor flaws then the savings are well worth it.

Used Sigma 17-70 autofocus problem

Since it's a used lens you might have to do some Micro Adjustments on it. I have the Sigma 17-70 and although it's not really what one would consider a "Great" lens, for casual walk-around pictures it's really convenient. Mine has developed a squeal every time it tries to auto focus, but its not enough for me to send it for repairs.

Charging the Theta Z1 ?

The camera is awesome, but has a tendency to flare up when there is a lot of contrast between light and dark such as when light is coming through a window. The lens in the rear has incredible reach so you have to be careful what is behind you. I use my iPhone to control the camera instead of using the shutter button which gives me more time to get out the way.

I followed the User Guide this morning by forcing my camera off, by pressing the WI-FI/LAN button and the Power button simultaneously. When I left my house this morning my camera was charged at 87%. When I returned home at 5:00PM I did a check and the phone was still charged at 87% which is good ! I'm going to be using this phone mostly for Real-Estate photography. Hopefully when I get up to speed, I can get creative shooting other subjects. What got me wondering is that there is none of the Aperture/Shutter Speed/ISO parameters to worry about ?

World wide colour film shortage.

If they keep raising the prices, film will be gone forever. Right now I treat my 135 mm film like I do 4X5" film where every picture counts, the price is so high. Last year and the previous years, I made sure to stock up on some film when it was cheaper, but that stock is quickly running out...

I would definitely buy it ! The reason I don't purchase the current 50-135 is because of its reputation with bad AF motors. The 50-135 mm is the equivalent of a 70-200 mm lens on full frame camera, therefore perfect for weddings and events.

Wow thanks for the info, that's a lot of research ! I rarely use the stop-down method unless I'm using my old Takumar lenses anyway. Most of my images come out pretty good using this method. Despite my attempts to try to learn the what the Green Button does for years, I'm still baffled...

REviews for topaz labs?

I purchased it about 2 years ago when they were offering a steep discount, so I don't have the latest version . Prior to that, I had the original version when it first came out. I like it, push button presets that will change your image to unimaginable number of variations very easily and quickly. Some of the presets are cumulative, so that you can add as many different presets to the image as you like one on top of the other. Unfortunately, I don't use it unless I have to which is rarely. If you are the artistic type and are designing websites, or CD/album covers, it comes in handy, but otherwise it gets kind of gimmicky and sometimes garish.

These days, a lot of software packages such as ACDSee come with Presets that allow you more control. Also, with Photoshop you can create the same effects using Layers(but with a lot more work) which are more subtle.Sometimes if you screw-up your exposure but otherwise have a good image, you can use these presets to salvage it. Like I said, I'm not an expert and don't know the various functions and nuances of the new versions of Topaz labs, but for the price, you can't go wrong in my opinion. Just another tool in your arsenal.

Wow, I'm really going to need some type of backup charging device. The internal battery on the Theta does not last too long. It went from 100% charge to 60% in about an hour and I have not taken any pictures ?

Charging the Theta Z1 ?

My on-loan Theta Z1 came in the mail. Despite it's tiny size the camera is all metal and exudes quality. The problem I'm having(not sure if its a problem) is how to charge the camera. The Manual states that you should only charge the camera using the supplied USB cable. I looked everywhere, but could not find a USB Cable inside the box it came with. Right now I'm using the same USB cable/USB Hub that I use to charge my non Apple phone. Meaning that its not a Rapid-USB used to charge Apple products. The Manual also states to charge the camera using a Computer, because a USB Hub might not work ? What exactly is the difference ?? How do you know it's not working ? I had to dig through the Richo On-line manuals to learn how to charge the camera. Those instructions are NOT in the 6 language manual that came with the camera. The instructions state that it takes 200 minutes to fully charge the camera. (lets see now 200/60 = 3 hours 30 minutes) Good thing I went to school ! If my USB HUB/Cable does not charge the camera, that means I wasted 3.3 hours. What happens when you need to charge the camera and you don't have a computer handy ? Can anybody please help !

Allot of modern cameras especially the ones with some type of matrix metering already take into account Bright backgrounds so you might not have to do anything depending on your camera. Still, I would Auto Bracket just in case.

K-1 Sports Photography - Tutorial Rec's

Actually you don't need blazing fps(frames-per-second) to shoot Sports. I've shot indoor and outdoor Youth-Sports with less than the 4.4 fps the K1 offers. Of course a high fps rate does help, but is not necessary if you know what you are doing. You are probably going to need to boost your shutter speed to 1/1000 preferably 1/2000 for BB so set your ISO accordingly.

Some things to remember : a) Try to fill the frame with your subject(s) . b) Avoid busy Panoramic style shots c) Never capture an athlete from the back (unless its an emergency, or unusual situation) d) Turn OFF the Image Stabilization e) Do use a Tripod, a Monopod is even better f) Do not shoot anywhere near the Sun, or bright lights g) Take the shot when the Athlete stops momentarily for a fraction of a second, NOT when they are moving full steam ahead(this takes practice) h) Set your camera to Multiple fps and AF tracking(not necessary) i) Set AF to Single Point, but Single Point Expanded also works if your camera has it. k) Avoid using flash ! l) Try not too Chimp too much you might miss the shot
