The Joke Thread

We were wincing at $2AU per litre here, so I’d say the jokes on you, or I would if I didn’t think we’d be likely to head the same way. The joke’s definitely on those who believe the partisan stories that circulate about who’s to blame for it. The joke’s over, as Ralph Steadman put it.

Discussion of PEF vs DNG and raw files moved from News and Rumours thread

Seeing Mark’s taken the very sensible step of moving this discussion to a new thread, I can add my experience with PEF and DNG files in Adobe’s Camera RAW (in CS5) on my 2009 27” iMac. Camera RAW treats both the same from the user viewpoint, except that the return of control to the user, on closing, is a lot faster with PEF than DNG.

I should add that my image processing doesn’t begin or end with Adobe products (I don’t use LIghtroom, either). I also use ON1 on my more recent MacBook Pro, Topaz Studio on both and DCU on either when separating HDR images for processing in Nik or Photomatix. Thanks for the reminder about RAW Therapee, which could be a more satisfying user experience than the clunky and slow DCU.

I haven’t seen much in the later versions of Adobe’s CS variants to attract me to upgrading, just as with using my old IMac, as nice as shiny, pretty new things are. YKMV.

Will we see a K1 Mark 3?

It’s fairly clear to me that any replacement for the K-1ii will be more costly than its predecessors, partly because of the shrinking ILC market, generally, and partly because of the rise in component costs (which I don’t expect to reverse any time in the near future, regardless of the supply chain issues being overcome). However, I don’t see that the target market for the K-1ii successor overlaps greatly with that of the K-3iii, so, while the camera body production line might currently be occupied with pushing out K-3iii bodies, the price of the K-3iii suggests that sales expectations are not as great as that of its predecessors, so I don’t expect that to go on for very much longer, if indeed production of the current batch hasn’t ceased already.

Lenses are another matter. While it’s true that the FF lens range can be utilised by APS-C bodies, they are larger and considerably more expensive than the dedicated APS-C ones, especially in the * and Limited sub-groups, so they aren’t going to appeal to a good proportion of APS-C body users, in my opinion. Nonetheless, specialist lenses such as tilt-shift and very long focal lengths, being low sales-volume items and both representing gaps in the current lineup, would probably have to serve both ranges. The FF range is fairly clearly going to be premium-priced from now on, but I do wonder about the range of low-budget APS-C lenses, though, which seems to have settled into long-throw zooms for longer FL needs after starting a promising range of single FL lenses with the DA35 and DA50.

Overall, though, I’ll start worrying about new bodies and lenses when Ricoh announces layoffs in their design staff.

Anyone who coped with the price rise from the K-3ii to the K-3iii will already have experienced that effect. From the looks of things, most of us have happily re-established our core body temperatures.

Well, maybe. The concept of offence has been somewhat weaponised in contemporary culture wars, most of which (in my opinion) are fairly contrived to serve a partisan cause of some sort.

What is important is to get all the relevant facts before forming an opinion, let alone commenting. In this case, the sometimes fraught issue of language translation seems to be at the heart of the problem. Had the initial translation to English been shown to be accurate in the intent of the original Japanese text, then it seems to me that women in particular might have had good reason to be offended. It seems, though, that things were not that cut and dried, as the most recent contribution by kwb indicates.

It’s difficult to find words that can add much the expressions of sadness and regret that you’re leaving us, Steve, but for what it may be worth, in my view as a fellow long-term member of this forum you’ve been a model of helpfulness and courtesy in your contributions, and now courage. I believe it’s fair to say that you depart with the good favour of all here, and I wish you the best that can be for your remaining time.

Welcome from Tasmania. As it turns out, my first Pentax was a (manual) S3 with a clip-on light meter, though I no longer have the camera.

We look forward to your contributions.

THIS is why I don't trust AI image processing software...

I use the Topaz AI tools quite a bit, although not every image is going to benefit from what they can do, and I haven’t tried the Gigapixel AI one yet.

While I agree that the default settings in Sharpen and Denoise can produce unsatisfactory results, they don’t always do that. Nonetheless, as others have said, they’re just tools and one has to put time into learning strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to best use them. I think that I’ve now put adequate time into learning how best to use them, so that I can judge when they’ll help turn a photo into something worth looking at.

I will say that contemporary sensor technology is diminishing my need for them, in a relative sense. In particular, the high-ISO noise in the K-3iii is such that some photos I took with the K-3 wouldn‘t have benefited as much from DenoiseAI if I’d had the K-3iii at the time, possibly SharpenAI as well, since I could have shot at higher shutter speeds or smaller apertures.

More power to Tony and Chelsea if they’re moving away from just promoting new camera gear, to talking about making pictures. IF they are, mind.

I’m often surprised by the amount of “sticky” dust that can accumulate on a sensor, even with the dust removal setting. It usually shows up on cloudless sky shots, especially those that require some PP work, like your low-contrast shot here. Try shooting a few clear sky or blank wall shots (not through your windshield). You may find you need to clean your sensor, as I did after I prepared my last posting.

I’m not sure about the connection between “hobby” and “wise”, however the 50-135/2.8 is a very good lens, particularly so as it compares favourably to a range of prime lenses, so that would be a “wise” purchase. I’d couple it to a good used K-3 or K-3ii to get the best out of it without splurging on a new K-3iii (although that may come later, so don’t rush to try one too soon, as that could be seen as “unwise”).

In the meantime, welcome to Pentax Forums and enjoy the camaraderie. There’s a great deal of knowledge here on Pentax (and other) systems, and good people who are willing to share it.

As I understand it, the rear filter is necessary only because it will shift the plane of focus, which isn't an issue if you use Live View (or, dare I say, another type of electronic viewfinder) but which would require compensation for an OVF.

Reality of Ricoh/Pentax's new strategy in Japan

Well, he didn’t much like it, did he? He thought the IQ was as expected from a camera and lens in that price range, but he didn’t like the ergonomics, so he cut the review short. And he said that he preferred a prism viewfinder. :)

So, Wolfgang’s opinion doesn’t appear to support a GR-based FF body over a DSLR.

Without knowing a lot more about the issues you're having with the K-3 and the Tamron lenses, my first suggestion would be to get hold of a Pentax 28-105, which admittedly is a full-frame lens, but which seems to play nicely with the K-3 and it isn’t expensive. I can’t comment on the Tamrons themselves, because I don’t have either of them, but I do have the 28-105 and it’s very good in its own right, but a bargain (in my opinion) at the price. The field of view is more limited than your wider Tamron, though, and that may be a consideration, so perhaps a Pentax 18-135 might be a good option.

The K-3iii, of course, is a very big step up from the K-3 in many ways (and I have both), so that would be the ultimate upgrade for you, but it comes at a price (although not hugely different to the X-T4) and with a 5-year-old it sounds like you’re a bit cautious about such an outlay.

I should also say that the Pentax (nee Tamron) 70-210/4 (again, a full frame lens) also plays nicely with the K-3 (and the K-3iii), but it isn’t that cheap unless you compare it with the Pentax 70-200/2.8. :)

It looked OK to me when I bought mine, mainly because I could see price rises coming from a shrinking market.

While people might look at current prices and react negatively, it really is the same story of old: you can buy cheap and often or buy expensive and less often. Ricoh’s release rate matches the latter, so people should expect to pay more and keep it longer because it works out the same over time.

Along that line, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a full-frame Pentax 645Z+ launched at north of $20k, before too much longer. It wouldn’t sell as many as its predecessors, but it would be competitive against Hasselblad and Phase One, rather than Fujifilm.

On another matter, I do miss Monochrome’s once-regular input, here.

Taken with the HD PENTAX-D FA 70-210mm F4 ED SDM WR.

This is part of the Wellington Range, from the Southern aspect, across some farmland in the Huon Valley. Snowfalls on the Tasmanian highlands haven’t been very extensive so far this year, but the effect of the Southern Ocean oscillation in a La Nina year will lead to more, predicted to be down to the 100 metre mark shortly.

All cameras to have USB-C charger by 2024

It’s the right time, if not past it, really. People finger-point at Apple for their brand-exclusive charging ports, but they forget (or never knew, maybe) about the previous phone-makers’ brand-exclusive chargers, not to mention the three varieties of USB charger prior to the current USB-C, that were used by Android devices. I have several different perfectly good chargers from the pre-smartphone era that are useless to me now, even some mini-USB ones. To be fair, the micro-USB chargers still have some uses for me, but probably not for much longer.

Ricoh made the right call with the K-3iii charging port.
