I kind of suck at portraits probably because I fail to do this.

Reasons you love the K01 ?

While saying "love" is too strong, I do really like the K-01.
One of the main reasons reviewers didn't like it was because it looked so different to other DSLRs at the time. Personally I don't mind the looks and it was nice to see something different. Ergonomics are just "Ok" but really its fine to use once you get used to it. Lack of optical viewfinder is probably its biggest weakness.
As far as strengths go:
1. Size is really nice, and paired with the DA limited lenses makes for a very compact APS-C prime camera kit (and have great IQ)! I often took it if traveling very light.
2. Camera IQ is very good. In fact better than the K-5, due to weaker anti-aliasing filter.
3. Exposure is usually pretty bang on (can't say that about the K-5 - a close relative).
4. AF, although not very fast, is also pretty accurate

Obviously the IQ won't compete with something like K3III or K-1 but its still a pretty useful piece of kit.

Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR question

The DFA 28-105 is a great lens for sure. On the K-1, I'm usually petty happy using f5.6 across the range (Ok ideally stopping down to f8 at 80mm - 105mm). All assuming the focus is right of course.
Even at 28mm at f3.5 it is very usable. However I find, at least for my copy, that f8 is (on average across focal range) the sweet spot and going to f11 is still very good but not quite as good as f8.

Photography rules are made to be broken! Maybe its not surprising that Ringo, being a creative person, took some pretty creative shots. Anyway I do like that shot.

I also don't normally go for bling (usability and functionality are most important) but that is one nice looking camera - especially with silver limiteds!
Looking forward to seeing what the next FF camera brings - in addition to some of the K-3 III improvements that is!

First good prime to get? For K-1M2, K-70, and also film

Ha - I did it in reverse! For me I got the 77mm first, liked it, then same seller offered me a 31mm at a decent price and got that. A year after that I got the 43mm Ltd and while the other limiteds are fantastic, the 43 is my go to lens due to its versatile focal length.

All good options but another suggestion is the FA43 f1.9 Ltd as its a very useful FL on fullframe and a great little performer (and the cheapest limited). Mine is on the K-1 quite a lot.

DA 35 2.4 vs. FA 35 2.0 on K-1

I found the FA 35 f2 to be great on the K-1 and was my go to until I got a FA 31 Ltd.
The FA 35 bokeh can be busy sometimes but I have plenty of shots where its really good.
When I went to the 31 Ltd, while its a fantastic lens, I found, for walk around, I actually liked 35mm FOV a little better versus the 31mm (even though its not that much different). However now I have a FA 43 limited, and find thats an even better general purpose focal length (and a great all round lens - although it seems there may be some less stellar copies around) - I like the bokeh better than the FA35 and its small too!

Interesting shot - like it.
I guess its all relative, do Nikon and Canon have better AF: for the flagship models absolutely. But is Pentax AF good enough for most photography - yes!

LBA and the law of diminishing returns

Well I certainly have more lenses than I need. I find I have some sort of weird emotional attachment to some of them and so I'm very reluctant to let them go, even though I rarely use them. Some day there will be a reckoning and I will trim down the lenses I have - honest!

However I do think that, indirectly, the new lenses have helped improve my photography skills, as when I get a new lens I get all enthusiastic with it and go around shooting lots of stuff (a lot more than normal), which improves my skills. But yes the return on investment is greatly reduced over my early days with new gear.

Could Canon's discontinuation of DSLR help the "Pentax niche?"

An optical viewfinder still offers some advantages but this advantage reduces over time as technology develops and mirrorless offers other advantages.

While I'm happy in Pentax land for the time being, I do wonder what the future will bring (possibly Pentax just carries on as a niche like Leica etc).

I think changing mounts is Ok as long at the benefits are there BUT its important to provide a migration path (like an adapter say) to support existing glass. That was my big rant with Canon dropping FD mount where there was no such thing (except years later by 3rd parties).

Highest Shutter Count K1?

I was on 14,663 last month. Have had it over 5 years, so apparently I only do about 3000 shots a year on average. I'm at best a weekend warrior.
its never been serviced (other than my own sensor clean - twice). I do try to keep lens change times very short and in clean environments to avoid dust entering (and it seems like the pump action of the DA 28-105 has been the main way dust got in as only saw dust after extended use of it). The fact I only had to clean the sensor twice in that period says a lot about the K-1 dust removal system, as my K-5 sensor need cleaning anywhere from 6 months to 12 months depending on my use.

Never had any issues with mine over the past 3 years. My biggest combination is a K-1 with Tamron 70-200 f2.8 - I wouldn't normally hang this combination from a neck strap for long, as its pretty heavy, but if it slipped out of my hands I'm pretty confident it would hold.

New or used what do you prefer?

Used when I can get it.
Have had the odd issue with older used gear, but nothing of note with anything expensive fortunately.
Main exceptions for me are:
1. K-1 - just had to have one and nothing locally (NZ) second hand at the time
2. DFA 28-105 - not available second had at time and wanted it for the K-1
3. Tamron SP 70-200. There was one being sold second hand I was thinking about but in the end got a deal on a new one for about the same price.
4. DFA 21 f2.4 Limited. Yeah I had been craving for something good and around 20mm for a long time and could not wait a few years for a second hand one. In fact I did something I have never done before and pre-ordered it! Its brilliant too!

The second hand stuff came via:
1. For NZ sales: Trademe (good online experience IMO and like it a lot more than Ebay)
2. For Overseas sales: Ebay. Typically from Japan, as shipping from USA to NZ is pretty expensive.
3. Also have one purchase via Pentax Forums market place (from Canada).

Key to buying online for me is:
1. Look hard (and several times) at descriptions and photos.
2. Ask the buyer questions on anything of doubt - don't assume!
3. From past experiences fungus & haze can be and issue with older lenses and is something to look out for. If its not stated as being clear of fungus & haze I usually ask about it and sometimes give instructions on how to inspect the lens for fungus (if seller is not sure how to tell).

Is this a dying symptom of my Kx, or just a scare?
Posted By kiwi_jono

I don't know for sure but possibly these symptoms could be battery related. If the K-x loses its battery long enough (especially an older one) then it will lose its settings memory. You don't mention what batteries you are using but it may be worth trying a different set of batteries. Maybe check battery contacts are clean too.
If it turns out the camera is dying then at least the good news is it would be relatively cheap to replace with a second hand camera (maybe not k-30 due to solenoid failures but something like a K-5 which can be had cheap second hand).

D FA 28-105 vs. Lower-Light Options

You could consider bolstering the 28-105 with a good prime (which are faster and great IQ)?
For example my FA 43 f1.9 is so small it goes everywhere and in fact is most often on the camera.

pentax-m 50mm 1.4 vs 1.2

I have the A 50 f1.2, and the FA 50 f.14. The bokeh is not as different from f1.4 as you might think but the difference is there.
In addition I found my f1.2 to be a bit sharper wide open that my FA 50 f1.4 wide open, and significantly sharper at the same apertures. So thats a plus.
In fact sometimes I use my A50 f1.2 at f1.4, where the IQ is pretty nice (to my eyes) - where as I didn't often use f1.4 on my FA 50 f1.4. Although if f1.4 was your primary aperture and you had the money (and desire to carry it around) then probably the DFA*50 f1.4 would be better.
Overall it was worth it for me (and I will probably sell the FA 50 f1.4 and other fast 50s) but its not a lens I use super often as prefer the FL of FA43 f1.9 I now have.
