K-3 or K-3II or wait?

Thanks to all. As I said, the most part of my interest is CBA...

Only features that I really need to have on my camera and havent are: two SD slots (becouse I had once issue with my k-5ii that after event there is defective SD card - and no sloutch -SanDisk Extreme), so for safety reasons - auto backuping... And second thing, that limiting me, is too large AF points. Id like to have smaller one. Better AF tracking will be nice bonus too, but I donť use it quite often...

But, If I have 20k actuations on my k-5II - then I hope that it can serve me in about more two years.

Thanks for your comments.

K-3 or K-3II or wait?

Hi, in our country just started cashback for Pentax cameras (not k-3II), sadly with only half amoount than in other european countries:(
So, I have one half serious / half theoretical question - I know, its all about my CBA :)

I have 2 years old (20k shutter actuations) k5II(not s) and I'm satisfied with it. But with k-3 I will have better AF, no AA filter, two SD slots and more. And it saves me from buying new battery ($70), becouse they share same type;) So, if I want to buy new body, what you suggest me ?
1) K-3 for $975 (best price here ever, but no extra, no grip... - yes, price is way higher than in US)
2) K-3II for $1100 (it is very surprising, but this is about same price as in US :) )
3) wait for (I hope) upcoming new APS-C FLAGSHIP.
Why I'm asking? As I already posted in around here, prices of body here is quite high with very small tendency of decreasing. If new APS-C flagship will be over $1200 (here will be about 20% more expensive - with exception of latest K-3II) it will drop in US quite quickly (included free grip and so), but here it will retain its price tag on its own for another 1 year as in case of K-5IIs and K-3 (drop from $1500 to $1100 after 1.5 year and cash back after almost 2 years... and no extra grip or so). So it means, if release date is in spring 2016 - it takes about to half of 2017 to get price to $900-$1100 range, which is acceptable for me. So, my question is, do you thing it is worth to wait?

And another question. If I decide to buy new body now: Is new features of k-3II worth the $125 difference? (I have 2 p-ttl flashes so absence onboard is not big deal, but in other hand, I absolutely don't need gps or astrotracer).

What is real difference in improved SR and AF?

Thanks for your comments and opinions.

FA 20/2.8 vs. DA 21/3.2

I don't own FA, but for about 1 year I'm using HD 21 ltd - And I must say that it perfectly fits to my needs. It is not as sharp as 35ltd or 100Macro, but it has character - nice color redention, vibrance, clarity. I mus say that I'm very pleased with results and finally had choose DA21ltd over DA15ldt.
My 2 cents.

50-200mm WR Sharpness

It is not as easy answer.

I had both that lenses in same time and done some test. (BTE, my 50-200 need af adjustment) And I found absolutelly comparable results in terms of IQ on comparable FL and aperture. The next thing is - If I want sharp pictures from 300mm - I must stup down past 8 (11). And I need handheld faster shutter (so it leads to higher ISO...).
And, even in my test shots (from tripod, etc..) I found, that shots from 300mm FL is almost as detailed as upscaled photos from both lenses at 200mm!

Take in account size, AF hunting and slow AF of 55-300, price... So I kept 50-200.

There are others with same observations - but there are others with oposite experience - So, I think, that you must take in account very huge sample variation!

Here it is 850 euro and never be less, only more. And sale tax, you right. Local VAT here is 21%, so without it is $730 (k-5IIs body only) compared to $530 (grip and card included)...Even counting that it is really big difference...

Yes, but what about warranty? I was very tempted in december to buy k-3 with grip, Flu Card and 18-135 for about $900-1100 (dont remember exactly)- very nice deal Here it was for more than $2000 - so, even with shipping, taxes and duties it is really nice price. But then I realized total lost of warranty and choose to wait to next iterration of Pentax APS-C. What way you deal with warranty and warranty issues?

Couple of years ago there was 1-year international warranty - didn't matter where one bought camera, if it is from official dealer across the world, there was a warranty.
Now? In my country, when it is not bought from local official source, the only one repair centre here even doesn't accept that stuff for repair! (and they told me, that ditributors decided to go this way becouse large portion of cameras bought from US, so they want to prevent it. If prices are about same, this will be no issue at all:) )

---------- Post added 04-19-15 at 05:55 PM ----------

In EU is 2-yars warranty by law. So, as I know, one year more than in US. But - really this ONE YEAR costs half of the camera? On BH you can buy extended warranty (3 years total) for $20, so??? BTW: If I need 3 year warranty here, I must for that 1 year more pay about $70.

Yes, bur not that big. For example, NIkon D7100 is on BH at $996 and here is $1040 (5%). On Canon 7D MII is diferrence about $200 so about 12%. And Canon and NIkon have both deal and sales here (not right now, but more than every half of year). Deals and sales with Pentax was max about $80, old models are only slightly cheaper than new one - so here is waiting for sellout meanless. And initial pricing is quite incredible too, for better bodies (for k-s1 its quite better). For exapmple, Pentax k-3 body started here at price (with that time exchange rate) $1700. For several years we did't get anything extra with hi end body (max is cheap wired remote with $10 value). I want grip, for example. But here it cost $270. Battery is $75. To be honest, rigt now is deal that add 32GB card and bag... So maybe it will be better next time :)

It seams, that in US are Pentax bodies clear best "value to price ratio" cameras. But if they want to be competitive here, they must do something with it.

K5iis price in Europe

Yes, pricing of bodies is quite strange, here in Europe. In our store (in Czech) is K-5IIs for 850 EUR (about $920) - body only, no extra grip or card or anything. On BH or Adormama it was about $490 for body or 530 for body and 64GB SD and Grip - here it will be nice $1200 - so more than twice more!!! Same for K-3 - about $800 with grip (and there was better limited time offers even with flu cards, flashes for little extra ect..) And here it is for body and grip nice $1180 (almost $400 difference). Same with k-50 - $370 with flash and card - and here - oh, really big deal in our stores, its only $600 - sweet.

As I love Pentax for its cameras and lenses, I hate Pentax (Ricoh) for their global pricing. I dont know why is here in europe every body 50%-120% more expensive. And lenses also. No deals or Black Fridays here (yes, here are black fridays in fact, but with discounts about 5-10 bucks on 1000 bucks stuff). So HD 20-40 $670 US and $860 in EU and that it is with everything. So, I have one question for next interwiev with Pentax reps. How about even pricing around the world? And I know, that this question was suggested already in particular thread (and not by me:) ). And yes, i had asked our local representative - and they politely answered, that they cannot do anything with it, becouse this is decision of global management...

So, long story short. Yes, it is massive diferrence. Yes it is not fair (we in europe haven' grater income then in US and Canada). And why? Becouse they doesen't care much about european market - and prices, that pays distributors in EU are obiviously much higher than in US, so they can't make that big deals and sales.

So, Im on one boat with You, 2grahamb.

Yes - today a have been testing that settings. I find that with some playing with auto ISO parametr and sport P shif - I can get desirable behaviour. So, I tested also your suggestion with TAv mode - and this will be good, only need to get used it.

Yes, that it what I want to say in my previous posts... I'm birding with 200mm lens (birding is not purpose for that lense - only "side efect") so I need to crop quite often - so I want to avoide ISO above 800 -1250...

Thanks all for suggestions!

Enoeske's reactions really does not help much. It's like if to a person (who asks how to set the camera to better AF) advises that has to use manual focus - because if he needs autofocus, he do not want to do "photograph". I'm wondering why he is responding this way, I have always appreciated the very friendly atmosphere here at Pentax Forum, therefore I do not know why I should been critised just because I asked for the camera function, or advice on how to bypass its absence...

But thanks all of you, who want to help.
I will try P mode with fast shift and fast auto ISO. Today I will have good oportunity to test it in field.

No - metering is fine. Its that if I use given aperture and shutter speed in TAv mode and conditions rapidly changes - correct exposure will be something about ISO 40 -but it cant bem so it leaves ISO80 end overexposure. This is not fault of mettering. Just lack of function in Av mode - shutter speed limiter (that limit shutter to do not set under given value you need),

PS: For the record, I can use Manual mode, I'm using it in certain situations, where I have a time. When I taking, for example, bird photos, I havent got time to fiddle with controls. I want to preset setting that suits my needs and let the camera auto set rest. I'm shoting for several years, but recently I have started to do some light wildlife. Thats all.

All suggestion above might work. The problem is, when I need to be really fast - I really havent got time to turn dials and checking exposure marker...

This is not about buying Fuji, Im satisfied with my system - I only asking a question. I was only confused. Yesterday I reallized, that entry level Nikon D5100 (that I have in work) have that function and I was quite surprised that my twice expensive camera haven't. It is quite surprising, given that Pentax is well known for its features that matchs more expensive cameras. I was wondering that I missed some tweek or setting.

Now, I know, that my camera lack that feature so I will test some setting with fast auto ISO etc...

Thanlks for your advices...

If it is in studio, M will be ok. But this is in my wildlife, birding etc.. shoting. I need high shutter speed stop down aperture a little and conditions is changing very rapidly. I havent got time to manual.
And compenstaion dosent help - it overexposes becouse on given shutter speed even ISO 80 is too much.

This is first feature that low to mid-end Nikon has and my Pentax doesn't. With almost everything else it was oposite :))

What I mean: In certain situations I need some short shutter times, lets say 1/200. And I want to stop down aperture a bit (from 2.8 to 4, for example). I use K-5II.

My choices are:
TAv mode: In this situation set time to 1/200 and f4 - and AE will set ISO - But if it is brighter, then it sets ISO to 80 and overexposure by large margin. Ok, I set time to 1/400 - but again when come to darker area, it turn ISO to 800 or 1600 and I have more noisy picture than is necessary - because 1/200 will be sufficient.

Tv mode: this will set aperture to full open in darker situations - but I need it close a bit.

Av mode: This may be the right one, but: If I choose aperture it calculate time that I can handhold, yes (with 200m it is 1/60) - but it is too slow for my subject!

What I am looking for? I need shutter limiter in Av mode (In work I have Nikon D5100 - and it has it) - I would set automatic ISO and minimal shutter (for example 1/200). If conditions are darker, it pumps up ISO, if brighter it set ISO to the lowest value and pump up shutter...

Is there already some feature like this - And I am only not able to find it? Or not? If so, is there any workaround?

Thanks for your help.

Nice shots...

Im just learning this lens but I must say that I am completely satisfied with the sharpness. I think that this lens does not deserve the somewhat tarnished reputation. It is amazing and lends still relatively small and lightweight - today I was on the 4-hour photo walk with no problem.

There is two of my first shots:

Purple fringing is in my real shooting way less intrusive that I affraid. But I have another problem - I have problem with shooting mooving subjects with AF-C. I know, that Pentax is not af-c beast, but Im succesfully using it with my other lenses (screwdrive, DC, SDM) but this lens is somewhat resisting me:) I have better keeper rate with AF-S even on moving targets... Do I only need more practice with this FL, or is there any trick?

I had some lenses that cant focus correctly with my k-5II. I do many corrections, test shots, etc, but with no succes.
So, I call to our local Pentax repair centre - they told me, that it can be camera fault - So I take five my most used lens and camera and take it to repair centre. They test it and - yes - camera has slight missfocus - nothing to notice with f-stop 3.5 and higher. They send my 5 lenses and body to France to racalibration (body is under warranty, some lenses are, some not - but all brand Pentax) - and now it is razor accurate. Nice. Even my 100 Macro is even better then before:) The very helpfull srvicemen told me, that people usually do they af callibration wrong way - and make it worse. And often it is camera problem - and with calibrated camera it turns to no (or verry little) need to calibrate lenses.

Also, I have DA 50 1.8 with no excessive hunting problem. Problem is that center AF point is 2.8 accuracy and lens is 1.8...

But, in the other hand, some my lenses (that are calibrated) need more that -10 coorection on my K-r body (need to acces service menu)! And my DA40 dont focus correctly anyway... Then I realized, that my DA40, when focusing really close - is focusing slightly off. And I tested and calibrate it in close distance. - So, I calibrate my camera with my razor sharp DFA100, then put on it back DA40 - and voila! Focus is right!

BTW: I have allways problems with sigma lenses on my Pentax cameras - must return 18-35 and 30 1.4 C becouse focusing issues. But, to be honest, I must return DA20-40ltd due to decentring issue, so even in Pentax high grade lens arent everything ok.

So my advice - send to calibration all your Pentax lenses, which is for you importatnt, with your body. In Europe must be in warranty only body, if lenses are brand Pentax.

Thanks all for quick responses.

I read thois reviews multiple times:) Im not primary concerned about AF speed (if it is not tooo slow - I'm quite satisfiet even with AF quicknes of *50-135). I'm looking for good IQ in small package, if possible. And something that suit my k-5II and it is capable to be sharp on pixel level even if I will upgrade in future to more MP body.

I'm affraid of this. I mean, if in medium distances it is about as 220-230mm and one stop slower - Will I be more happy with 200 which is also lighter? If IQ on f/4 is good and sharpness is tack sharp (even while pixel peeping), I can easily crop...

This is my biggest concern about it. I saw some really horrible pictures - but in some circumstances, all lenses can produces bad results...

I already had (and sold) two lens that went to 300mm (55-300 and tammy70-300) and found out, that rarelly need full zoom. (And with those lenses if I got to 300mm IQ significantly drop - almost same level of image degradation as with upscaling from smaller focal lenght). I'm not going to do much sport shooting or safari wildlife - I like to take it with me to Zoo, walkaround etc. and use it often handhold. So, maybe, I'm affraid, that it will be problem with heavier and longer lenses than 200. And I thought that it will be good lens for shooting in theatre and music perfomances.

---------- Post added 03-19-15 at 01:43 AM ----------

This is the the way which my ideas are going now. You're nailed it.
And for doubles - I then can go with my prime kit - 21/3.2 50/1.8 100/2.8 and - maybe 200/2.8...

Hi,
I'm looking for telephoto upgrade from my kit lens (50-200 WR) and I would like something, which give me same degree of IQ as my DA*50-135 or DFA 100 Macro (since I got these lenses, I'm spoiled by its IQ).
I got advices to get DA*300 f/4 or DA*60-250 f/4 but...

These lenses are considerably heavier and bigger than my lenses. DA*200 is only slightly bigger then DA*50-135, while it is 1 full stop faster then above two.
And price of DA*200 and Pentax TC (thus 280 f/4) together is about same as 60-250, while DA*300 is somewhat between.
In terms of focal lengths, I assume that if I can crop images from 200mm in same degree as images from DA*50-135 or my DFA100WR, I will be quite happy with it (and if I need in furure more reach, I can add that TC, I think).

From what i read i think, the DA*200 fill my purposes, but I have some concerns. I read very different reviews and user experiences. Some praise DA*200 as one of the sharpest pentax lens (sharper then 300 nad 60-250) others stated that its performance is quite sub-par to premium pro-grade telephoto...
And lot of reviews found terrible purple fringing with this lens.

Same about autofocus performance. From very slow to nice and quick.
But almost all of these reviews are taken with k10 or other older body.

Is there anyone that posses this lens and can share his experience with it with me? I will be very gratefull if I can see some full res pictures (best will be raw - to see, how difficult it will be to get rid of PF with my adobe camera raw).

It will be great if someone, who have (or had) both or all of these lenses can somewhat compare them.

Thanks for your effort.

BTW: I'm not some "super ZOO photographer". Just this is the place, where I missed the long tele.

Absolutly not! This and my DFA100WR Macro are my favorit lenses.

But you are right - I must be happy with cropping ability of my gear or get something significantly better.

So, I will wait - or mayby buy a k-3 (just in case of good price)

Im afraid, that this is not true here. Current price of K-3 is the lowest in our country ever and k-5 (opriginal) never fall beyond 650€, k-5II 670€ and k-5IIs beyond 760€. And used k-5IIs is here for 630€. Yes, we have quite expensive Pentax stuff here. If buy It form US, I will not get warranty and to indicatet price I must pay about 25% more for duties and tax and of course a shipping. From other EU countries - only I need add only shipping, but with warranty will be problem here, becouse our official Pentax-ricoh service dosent accept international warranty - only gods bought from our official distributor.

There is rarelly something from EU - with price (incl. shipping) is resonable lower to justiffy lack of warranty. (I now, two months ago there be a 60-25 for about 700€...)

But this is another story :) I can do the math. (And I have several used stuff, if it comes to be good deal, but I affraid to pay that much without any warranty or be able to test it).

The question is what way to go.

Yes - this is what I'm thinking about (and already read it). When I have k-5II - mybe i will be satisfied with k-5IIs - but it is more expensive than k-3 right now :)

I think this is a misunderstanding. I do lot of crops in fact. I use the 50-200 becouse I have 50-200 (and had it before 50-135). I take it If I want something lightweight. And lastly, I want to test if this it will be better on 200 than 50-135 on crop. I found that not, but I like more reaxch that IU can get - so I started this thred:)

But I very much appreciate your help, showing me the direction in which I have yet does not proceed.

Mayby I can stay with croping my 50-135 on my k-5II and stay tuned for upcoming k-3 succesor...

No it would solve it. My problem is not a pure reach. If I get same image quality from 200mm as from my *50-135 at 135 - It will be enough for me. From my *50-135 shots I can do heavy crops. In right circumstances, I get images that wieved on 100% are perfectly sharp (so I can print A4 format (on 300dpi) with 8mp image - that is what I can get from 270mm lens without croping). With my 50-200 I cant crop much.

If I can get same cropping potencial from Da*200 lens as from my DA*50-135 I will be happy with it. But I affraid, that PF issues and bokeh fringing is so bad to do that.

Thanks for your pictures. It seem taht *50-135 can resolve full 24MP of K3 sensor.

This is what I'm currently thinking about. Using my current (and beloved) *50-135 and get "telephoto option" by increased resolution of 24MP without AA vs 16MP with AA. Theoretically, I can get more then 50% more resolution - but from DXo mark the improvement is about 35% - about the same as using TC1.4 (If TC will be absolutlly ideal, and it is not).

This is my usual Zoo lens - but sometimes a need more reach. So lastly, I get to ZOO 50-200 instead of it - It was good experience, becouse I learned, that 200mm will be enough to me (If I can crop as I can with my 50-135).

Im not sure about this. Its heavier than my current most heavy setup - and it is the most expensive solution. New it is about $1300. And used here, in Europe? On e-bay i cannot find anything used from EU. I haven't seen any of them on our local shop (biggest in our country) with used lenses for maybe 5 years (and I'm not brave enough to buy something that expensive without any buyers protection). So, as I stated before, i cannot counting with used prices. Only with new prices.

Mayby I can just wait for upcoming K-3 succesor and buy it or wait for discounted K-3. The only problem is, that here discontinued models arent discounted much. For example, k-5IIs is for $930. K-3 with current cashback is only $920 - so I'm affraid, tah it is the best price that we can get here. (Launch price was about $1750 here - body only).

So my decisions are now:

1) buy a k-3 and get close with croping of 24MP no AA sensor
2) buy DA*300 and get great telephoto.
3) buy DA*200 and get great and small telephoto.
4) buy da*60-250 and get hreat versatille telephoto zoom

But. I assume, that DA*200 arent quite highly regarded as others. Why?
