Same here. I've used it quite a lot. For hikes as long as 12 miles through the Costa Rican jungle with the KP and 55-300PLM. It works great, though I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to do a hike that long with the K-1 and 70-200 hanging off my shoulder strap.

Will we ever get a 400mm f2.8 lens for sports photographers?

For pretty much static shots like that, or astro, probably cheaper just to get a refractor telescope or spotting scope. You could get a very high quality triplet refractor for a lot less than a new 600mm lens from any camera manufacturer. The benefit of a lens comes in AF for moving subjects.

Why I stopped using my DA*300

I've had most of the options in this range, and pretty much come to the same conclusion. The 300 is an excellent lens, but the optical quality doesn't matter if it can't get the focus right. The 150-450 is pretty much just as good at 300, plus faster focusing and zoom flexibility(though it's larger). The 60-250 I had seemed good, but not great optically, and was very slow on the focusing. The DFA* 70-200 was A LOT better on both fronts, though much more expensive, heavy, and larger. Even the Tamron 70-200 seems better than the 60-250. The 55-300PLM is night and day faster focusing, surprisingly good optically, and much smaller and lighter.

Not great. I'm not a pro, and have some options, so could get by. But that's a pro-level lens. Being out of commission for that long would be pretty unacceptable if my earnings were depending on it.

For hiking with a K-1, I'd be pretty tempted to use the 55-300 PLM in crop mode. It's light, compact, weatherproof, and fast-focusing.

They do pop up on eBay from Japan and Korea sellers some. Taking a bit of a chance on that front...but I've thought about it.
On APS-C(i.e. my KP), the 600 end would get me all the way out to 900 equivalent.

That would be way down the priority list for me, and I'd imagine for Pentax, because of such limited sales.
On the other hand, I wonder about an update of the F/FA 250-600. They might be able to do that with a lot less investment. And as mentioned above, there's less need for a 2.8 aperture these days with higher ISO performance being so good.

It's not a cheap option, but the new DA* 11-18 works on my K-1 with no significant vignetting from 15-18. Not much of a range, but you get a Pentax * quality lens, autofocus, weatherproofing, and the ability to use threaded filters. It's not small, but it's smaller than the 15-30.

There are 3rd party companies that do the same kind of mods that Canon did, basically allowing better performance in specific wavelengths, or in full spectrum. Including for Pentax cameras. Some of these mods will make visual spectrum performance worse.
Here's one of the most well-known of those companies, and they also have a lot of info on what is involved:

New information about new flagship's selling date

The Leica is more of an exception. They have been so much focused on preserving design and street shooting that it doesn't surprise me there.
But the new Canon EOS R cameras have a tilt screen, as do the Nikon z6 and z7. The Canon 1DX Mk3 is the big new one that doesn't. But are we really thinking that the K-new is a similar type of camera to that?

They don't need to design a new prism and mirror for that size sensor, the 645Z one should work just fine. And I would think the enhancements to AF only need to be medium...no one is using an MF camera for action sports or fast moving wildlife.

On the tilt screen front, reh321, we're kind of beating a a dead horse, but again, not like it's new tech for Pentax. They already have multiple cameras with it. And newer competing cameras from other manufacturers have them. So I don't think that's a feature that would just please a few users, it's one that would please a lot of users.

On the Z front, seems like Pentax should be able to to compete with Fuji, at least on price for the body. The lens front is a bigger question. Pentax can barely get 35mm lenses out, much less medium format too. I think this would also be the problem with moving to the larger medium format size...it would mean that the newer 645z lenses wouldn't work without a lot of vignetting.

As far as the new body goes, not thrilled about a wait until next summer. The fact that it is taking that long gives me a little hope that they might add in a tilt screen into the final version, but not a lot of hope, unfortunately. I still don't understand the thinking there. Pretty much all newer high-end bodies from any manufacturer have them, touch screen or not.

The attraction of a K-70 or KP as the second body is that they are smaller and lighter, so better suited for a lot of walking around while traveling or hiking. They also give you a little more reach for telephoto wildlife shots.

That section is for the new Ricoh Pentax cooling products division. They will soon be releasing the new flagship model portable fan, which may disappoint some people due to it's lack of articulating blades.
