Suggestion for wide angle lens and travel lens

DA15mm Ltd. (I know that you listed FF, but the DA15mm on the K-7 is a great combo IMHO).I have a K-7 and K-3, and continue to use my K-7. For travel, the DA15mm Ltd is a fantastic lens for landscape and city views.

I share some experience of my DA15mm Ltd in comparison with other primes at:
Primes in Paris -

I just come back from a trip in Europe, where I brought the DA18-270mm, DA15mm Ltd and FA77mm Ltd. Again the DA15mm Ltd was great. Highly recommended.

My 5 cents, hoping that it may help.

Low-Light Low light and action/nature photography in dark woods ... Flash use ?

A flash will 'freeze' the action only if the flash is fast, ie the lighting time is very short, and the action is close enough to be 'shined' by the flash light. In other words, the flash will work well if you can be close enough, within a 2-5 m with the K-3 onboard flash. That is my own experience

Another option is to combine a fast prime (f1.4 or faster) and a powerful torch. Not ideal for a bird but works for a wave.

How close can you get? This might be a key point to assess what might be feasible.....

The DA15mm Ltd is a no-brainer for landscape. It is a fantastic lens. Metallic construction (very solid), pancake shape (non intrusive), superb IQ.... It is an awesome landscape lens IMHO.

Highly recommended.

I posted my experience during a trip to Paris a few years ago at and the DA15mm was the real surprise!

Pentax K-3 ii as a beginner camera?

You already received some good advice. I will share my 'take' based upon my experience.

My first dSLR was the K-7. The K-3ii is the latest iteration of the Top-end of the Pentax dSLR APS-C, and there is nothing wrong to consider it as your first dSLR. As noted, it might be replaced relatively soon and beware. In turn you are getting great price for an excellent, robust, versatile camera.

Among my lenses, a fabulous lens is the DA15mm Ltd. The lens is metallic, superb IQ, fast focusing: a true delight. I am no star gazer and I cannot comment on that aspect. On all other counts, the DA15mm is a 'must' lens.

In summary, I would recommend the K-3ii with the DA15mm. It seems a winning system for what you want to shoot and you will not regret your decision. (Hell I still shoot with my K-7 and still enjoy it at low ISO.)

Pentax 18-270mm vs Sigma 18-300mm lens

I will comment on the superzoom. I had a DA18-250mm for 8 years. I bought it 2nd hand and I love it. An excellent all around zoom lens, very sturdy. But it was old and I had to replace it after 8 years of hard work. I bought a DA18-270mm for replacement. In my opinion, the DA18-270mm is an improvement over the DA18-250mm for its silent and faster AF, and the (small) extra reach. The IQ is very comparable IMHO and decent.

I tried briefly the Sigma 18-250mm but it is very heavy. I carry my camera when bushwalking and I value the Pentax camera and lens system for its small size and weight.. The Sigma 18-250mm was too heavy and I was nor comfortable. The Sigma 18-300mm is slightly heavier and I did not consider it.

In summary, if you want value for money and (relatively) light weight, a DA18-250mm in good condition would be great option IMHO, as mentioned earlier. If you have more funds, the DA18-270mm is good option for new lens with warranty.

My 5 cents, hoping that it may help.

I remember something like this (but not as serious) with my K-7 and a hard reset + full recharge of battery did the trick. I also removed the card, left all doors opened and placed the camera in a very dry place for 48 h to remove all sign of humidity.

+Have you tried a hard reset? Remove the battery for at least 48 h to discharge everything in the camera.

+Another possibility could be some moisture inside the camera. have you tried to dry up completely your camera, with all doors opened?

My 5 cents, hoping that it may help..

Very early morning to late morning shooting

For dawn light, you want to favor a fast lens especially since your will be hand-shooting. Your lenses Pentax F50 1:1.7 and Super Tak F50 1:1.4 will be the ones to use IMHO, although you could consider getting a new fast lens (but unlikely within the timeframe.)

I would try to keep the ISO low (800 ISO max, preferably 200 ISO) and set large aperture.

I suggest to do some trial tomorrow morning at the locations where you will shooting Wednesday to get used to the lenses and lighting conditions.

Hope that the comment may help.

A D FA★ 85mm f1.4 is on the road map for 2019:
2018 Pentax K-Mount Lens Roadmap - CP+ 2018 |

This may change the status of the legendary FA*85mm f1.4.

Personally I have the FA77mm Ltd and I was pondering to get a FA*85mm. I will wait for the D-FA*85mm.

My 5 cents.

I would read the recent review:

and I would buy a FA77mm Ltd again. The FA77mm is a great lens, fabulous for portrait. All Pentaxians would agree that the FA77mm is special and it was voted the best Pentax lens here at PF.

Hope that the comment may help.

On the same note, there is the oustanding Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 125mm f/2.5 SL, rare, expensive for a K-mount, and a truly outstanding lens.

As Sandy said: "Once again, I ask why?". What do you want to shoot?

Which lens option for a new K-70?

I would follow Adam's advice for the DA18-135mm. It is a relatively small light lens, lighter than the DA16-85mm. The DA16-85mm is said to be better IQ however.
If this is you first lens, go for the simple DA18-135mm. I shoot primes, but I continue to use the DA18-135mm as my all-around WR lens.
My 5 cents.

The FA 300 f4.5 is a smaller lighter lens than the DA*300mm. It can be used handheld quite well, and this why I chose it ahead of the DA*.

My 5 cents.

Nice Intro. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is nice to read, especially for one (like myself) who had only Pentax DSLR.

I would disagree however with the above statement. Pentax has some of the best prime lenses in the world. In fact, Pentax is renown for its impressive series of prime lens up to 100 mm. Examples include:
-the DA Limited series, the 'pancake' lenses - Pentax was the first big manufacturer to offer these delightful high-IQ small-size lenses;
-the FA Limited series, the 'three amigos' - both the FA77mm and FA33mm are the envy of Canikon shooters for their outstanding IQ and rendering
-the D-FA primes
-the DA* primes.

I genuinely hope that you will get some prime lens in the future. Very much worthwhile.

My 5 cents.

Which lens next: Your opinions?

Prime, Prime, Prime
Pentax is renown for its very high-quality prime lenses (up to ~100mm). There are the FA Limited (3 amigos), the DA Limited 'pancake' lenses, the DA*55m and DFA 100 mm.

You have a lot of zoom. Consider at least one prime lens. Which one? The DA*55mm f1.4 may be a great start IMHO.

I am a prime lens shooter, and I learn a lot using prime lenses. You have to move around because you cannot shoot in/out, but this enable you to get better lighting, great shots and ultimately to become a better shooter.

My 5 cents.

Next Prime Lens to buy

From 15 mm to 70 mm, there is quite a gap in focal length range. Assuming that price is not an issue, I would recommend to consider two additional lensed on your lens buying plan:

Option 1 : FA31 mm f1.8 Ltd & DA*55mm f1.4

Option 2: FA31mm Ltd & Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4

All the above are outstanding lenses and work very nicely on the K-3.

You may consider the FA31mm for now and think of a 55-58mm next. :)

My 5 cents...

Pentax 70-200 vs Pentax primes 77 and 200, which option for a K-70?
Posted By hcc
Replies: 26

While we may debate on prime vs zoom lenses on many things, there are a couple of basic truths:
-prime lenses are smaller and lighter than zoom lenses, for the same focal length and aperture; look at the Pentax DA Limited pancake prime lenses as a 'prime example';
-for the same IQ level, a zoom lens will be more complicated and cost more than a prime lens;
-a zoom lens is more convenient to use than a prime (or a couple of prime, with lens interchange);
-a good lens is worth 'every penny'; that is, a good IQ lens (prime or zoom) is an excellent investment, well worthwhile IMHO.

The first point is particularly important if you hike/bushwalk and carry your equipment. For me, this is important because I carry my equipment in the field. In addition Pentax made excellent small WR camera body and IMHO a small lens (+camera) system is more balanced.

Hope that the comment may help.

Perfect lens suite?

You have a good camera and two good lenses. These are zoom lenses. Pentax is widely renown for its outstanding prime lenses, from 14 to 100 mm especially. Fabulous prime lenses include the FA Limited series (the three amigos), the DA Limited series (pancake lenses), the DA* prime lenses and D-FA prime lenses and even the older FA* prime lenses.

I would urge you to consider a few prime lenses. Prime lenses can achieve outstanding IQ for a fraction of the cost of the corresponding zoom lenses. They can be fast (e.g. FA31mm f1.8, DA*55mm f1.4, FA77mm f1.8).

Based upon your current lens lineup, I would suggest to consider among the followings: DA15mm Ltd, FA31 mm Ltd, DA*55mm, FA7nn Ltd, D-FA100mm, DA*300mm.

Yes prime lenses are not as convenient and convivial as zoom lenses, but I believe that you can improve drastically your skills with a prime lens: you need to move around more and learn to be at the right place. That was certainly my own experience and I learn a lot.

My 5 cents....

The FA77mm is a great lens, superb for portrait. It was voted the best Pentax lens at PF. No wonder.

Highly recommended. I add that I have other great lenses, mentioned in earlier posts, like the Voigtlander 58mm, Carl Zeiss 85mm, Voigtlander 90mm, .... None are as good as the FA77mm Ltd in terms of portrait colour rendering IMHO.

Hope it may help.
