Would anyone else like a lightweight 85mm f1.8 for APS-C?

In the majority of cases a FF lens is larger than an APS-C lens. The DA 50/1.8 is not bigger than the FA 50/1.7, I am looking at them right now. In many cases there are PS-C lenses that could be made smaller than they actually are, though that might increase vignetting to the level often seen on FF lenses, but for equivalent vignetting an APS-C lens will always be smaller than a FF one.

I've nothing against a FF 85mm and believe one is in development, but the whole "just make it FF" arguement annoys me as it passes on extra size, weight and cost to APS-C users. Why shouldn't APS-C users be entitled to their own lenses, designed for their format, regardless of focal length?

By that logic all lenses should be FF compatible: twice the size, twice the weight and twice the price. APS-C is about being smaller and lighter and if it can be cheaper too then all the better.

Thanks. The lens really did produce good results on my zoo visit. Here are a couple more.

Good news ... K-1 is one of 20 most important cameras of the decade - DPReview

I don't think so. Many users here use other camera brands too. I use Fujifilm and if're talking film then that list gets a lot longer.

Actually the list only contains three DSLRs. All the others are mirrorless (yes, phones and compacts are mirrorless cameras too).

As for drones, smartphones etc, to declare them the most important would be to disregard all the massive improvements in large-sensored cameras during that time period.

Saying a manual lens collection is complete is like saying you've already spent all you're ever going to on car repairs.

I wouldn't mind one at all, though I find the DA 70mm f/2.4 limited ideal for portraits (and many other things) on APS-C DSLRs. 85mm would be a bit long for that.

manual lenses on digital camera body?

Using old manual lenses is one of the pleasures of modern digital cameras. Of the SLRs which allow that, Pentax is probably the best, followed by Nikon.

Manual lenses can also be used (with an adapter) on virtually any mirrorless camera body and in general they will work better and be easier to use than on an SLR.

DPR don't [ihate Pentax, but they do seriously under-value them because they seriously under-value the aspects of Pentax cameras that make them so good and which other makes do poorly - build quality, design for photographers who know what they're doing rather than people who have just heard that DSLRs are good, weather resistance, value for money, small & very high quality lenses etc etc.

It's good that they acknowledge the K-1 as an important camera but the 645Z was at least as important, being the camera that created the reasonably-priced (for digital medium format) digital medium format market and the first to break the 100 mark of image quality on DXO.

They also mark as important a few cameras which were not important at all and were complete failures (not that these two aspects necessarily go together, but in these cases they do). The Nikon 1-system cameras?? They were very poorly thought out. The Samsung that was also a phone? Come on now, be serious.

I shoot Minolta gear but have so far stuck to SR bodies as the later X-300, X-700 and their derivatives are known for their very poor electronics, but I might have to keep an eye open for the XE-7...

Vivitar (Kiron) 28mm f/2 on the K-3. This took a few attempts, focusing on the moss, putting the camera down into the waterway to shoot and checking focus.
