Bit confused, I did not use standard WD-40 but the electrical contact cleaner they make.
I am not recommending using the cleaner, just pointing out that it seems to have worked for me.

Having recently bought a K-500 (to replace my not quite fully functional K-x) I went out and bought some WD-40 FAST DRYING CONTACT CLEANER and sprayed it in through the small apertures either side of the wheel on my problem K-x, then exercised the wheel.
(My theory being that I was unlikely to break the camera with this cleaner but if I did I had the K-500 to fall back on.
Turns out the K-500 had the aperture block problem but the seller kindly gave me a partial refund.)
After leaving it until the following day I replaced the batteries and checked the operation of the wheel in AV and TV modes. The wheel was still not changing the aperture (in those modes) properly so I gave it a 2nd blast and exercise.
Then a 3rd and 4th, they provided better operation but not perfect.
Today I tried a 5th and it seems to have worked!
So I am now a happy bunny with a fully working K-x and can testify to the contact cleaner working. Time will tell.

Another vote for the K-5 models.
If you focus on them there will be something coming up for sale near your budget, especially if you are willing to exceed it for the right combination of body and lens.
An alternative, if you are happy to focus manually, is the K-30, K-50/500 models with aperture block. Not quite the overall specs the K-5 provides but there are plenty of Pentax manual lenses that can produce good images.
Bear in mind that you may get the inclination to upgrade sooner than you think but one of the K-5 models might prevent that inclination coming too quickly.

Thank you but there is no way I am going to try and fix it, I managed to junk my 80-320mm lens trying to clean it inside and that has scarred me and acknowledges my D-I-Y skill level as very very poor. ---------- Post added 10-30-19 at 08:15 AM ---------- ---------- Post added 10-30-19 at 08:17 AM ---------- Thank you all again, the seller and I have agreed an equitable £50 refund and I may retain the body and use it specifically for manual lens use.
Maybe I will sell it on at a later date.

Hi MossyRocks
I checked the cost of sending it with battery and charger, tracked by UK Royal Mail to USA and it would be as much as $30. No doubt I can find a cheaper carrier but the battery might be a no no.
I shall contact my seller and pm you.

It is a bit awkward to make that decision as it came with a DA 55-300mm that I would much like to keep.

I received my auction win K-500 yesterday and found it shows the dark image problem.
After resetting back to factory I tried it on various settings before checking on the forum to diagnose what the problem was.
I had seen the problem mentioned in the past but not taken much notice so will be checking on fixes today when I have time. While I am doing that;
Can someone advise whether I should return the camera..
Or try to fix the problem and ask for a partial refund?
Which non invasive "fixes" are recommended to try first?
I there a UK repair house that I could send it to and how much?
Thank yous in advance to all respondents.

My great niece has some interesting body tattoos and piercing, unfortunately I am never going to photograph them on her, or on her in the shower or bath.
Thank you for providing these shots you have taken.

I expect there will be a few million other listeners as the Rugby World Cup final is televised.

Number 5 had some problem with the light/flash preventing the girl's pupil from being round. Spoiled it for me unfortunately as my eyes were drawn there. Otherwise I would probably have added it to the three I liked best.

I have found this works if you keep turning the camera on, leaving it on for a few minutes, taking out and re-inserting the batteries, turn on again for a few minutes. Repeat this half a dozen times and then give up. I have tried this on two camera models, K100ds and K-m (2000) and been perhaps lucky as they both started working.
I use lithium batteries, not tried it with re-chargables.

Sigma 600mm mirror, hand held. A little contrast adjustment.
The interesting thing is the spots on the camera sensor show as doughnuts (or polo mints).
