Much as I love my Pentax film cameras, that is the kind of account that has so far dissuaded me from buying a modern digital Pentax.

I simply cannot justify spending over a thousand dollars on a camera and then discovering not only that it unreliable but also that having a repair carried out is fraught with anxiety.

That's a sweet-looking camera!

I recently inherited a Voigtlander Bessa that my Dad brought back from Germany, after the war. I don't have a photo of the camera yet that I can post but, as you are probably aware, it is a bellows design, like your Zeiss. Mine takes 6cm.x9cm. photos.

The Voigtlander seems to be fully functional apart from the shutter sticking when I operate the slowest speed, 1/125s. I keep "exercising" the shutter, to see if will become more reliable but so far without success. I am reluctant to start opening the mechanism for cleaning and lubrication. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.....

I hope your camera is working well.

Thanks for that interesting comment. I can see that your analysis is valid.

Since making my original post I have joined pluspora, a "pod" of the disapora* "federated" system of social groups. So far I have enjoyed the learning experience.

The answer to your question is "Yes!'. I have discovered there are numerous federated networks. I have now joined pluspora.

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions expressed here. They somehow ring true.

On the other hand, I did find that in Google + there was the benefit of stumbling upon the unexpected, communities and subjects that hitherto had not been an interest to me.
I shall continue my personal musings on this subject.

Hello, fellow Pentaxians.

Like millions of others, I have been dismayed this week by Google's announcement that they will close the Google + social medium.

I enjoyed participating in several photography-based communities on Google + and will be sorry to lose touch with my fellow contributors there.
I therefore would like to ask here for suggestions on a suitable replacement for Google +. I have already decided that I will not open an account on Facebook, Twitter, MeWe and several other sites owned by corporations.

I am already an occasional visitor to Flickr and maybe that will be where I spend more time online. However, I do have interests other than photography and so I would be more interested in a good-to-use, "federated" social medium, and preferably one that, like this forum, is open-source i.e. not controlled by a corporation. Naturally, I need to be where there are communities that engage in interesting and intelligent discussion about things photographic.

Thanks for any constructive suggestions!

Photokina 2018 Q&A - What would you ask Ricoh?

For me, an optical viewfinder is of major importance, in ANY type of camera. I also find that I am much more likely to carry a petite camera than one of much larger dimensions and heft. The very best optical viewfinders are in reflex cameras, and particularly film cameras. I use 35mm SLRs and point and shoot digital cameras.

Consequently, and after a little thought, I have come to the conclusion that what would really appeal to me is a camera with the following characteristics:

- The optical viewfinder, reflex optics, size and heft of a Pentax Auto 110.

- An interchangeable lens mount, allied with say wide-angle, standard and tele lenses.

- As large a digital sensor as possible within that package.

I am not a pixel-peeper: most point and shoot cameras give me adequate image quality.

It would be interesting to hear Pentax's response to such a notion. Maybe they will consider that there wouldn't be a big enough market.

Yes, that is valuable info for sure. The thrift store manager understandably has no knowledge at all about the technicalities. Thanks all for your help!

Here are a few pix that I just took of the thrift store lens.

- I saw no evidence of an "A" setting or the text "PK" on the aperture ring.
- There is an "O" setting on the aperture ring.
- The serial number starts with "22", indicating that th manufacturer was Kino Precision.
- The mount is totally different to the mount on my Pentax-M lenses.

So, in summary, I don't think this lens is compatible with Pentax cameras.

I note your comment. Thank you.

Based upon what UMC said earlier (see above quotation) when I go back to the thrift store to re-examine the lens I shall be:
- looking closely for associated text on the aperture ring
- taking one of my Pentax lenses with me, for comparison purposes

Thank you very much for your response, UMC. I shall go and take another look at the lens.

I don't actually want it for myself: the thrift store Manager just asked for my advice in valuing it. I told her I didn't really know either the value or the mount type. (She didn't know anything about mount types....). She is hoping I shall do some research which is what I am doing here. I didn't note the actual zoom range but it had a macro setting and was a really hefty piece of metal and glass. I think the long focal length must be around 200mm.

For the record, I suggested that she priced it at $20 (US). I don't think I am far out because at that price both the purchaser and the store should get a good deal.

Thanks again!

How to identify Vivitar Series 1 lens mount?

Hello all,

I saw yesterday a Vivitar Series 1 lens for sale in a thrift store. I suddenly realised that I did not have the knowledge to allow me to identify the lens mount type. With Pentax lenses I have no problem: the prominently printed text "Pentax" is a strong indicator :).

So my question is: How can I identify the Vivitar Series 1 lens mount type? From my online research it seems that if there is an "A" setting on the aperture ring this will indicate that it is a Pentax mount. But it also seems this is only true of some lenses in the Vivitar Series 1 range, and that the absence of the "A" does not imply that the lens is not a k-mount.

Moreover, I have no idea of whether such a lens was intended to fit Nikon, Canon, Minolta/Sony or Olympus cameras.
I post here an informative link: Vivitar 70-210 Series 1 Macro Zoom Lenses - Mark Roberts Photography

Thanks in advance for any information regarding my question.

Poll: What should the next Pentax Full Frame be?
Posted By Pentaxis
Replies: 161

First, let me very, very briefly summarise my standpoint regarding this poll.

Namely, I have Pentax 35mm film cameras but do not own a single Pentax digital camera. I have various K-mount lenses already, of course. Ideally, I would like to buy a Pentax full frame digital camera body, to use with my current lenses.

I don't need many of the technical features of the K-1. I can focus a lens myself, thank you very much! Likewise I really do not require anything complex in the way of auto-exposure. I can even get by, setting exposure manually. I suppose you could say I am in the "less is more" camp.

What I would really like is a Pentax digital SLR that was as close as possible, in form and function, to a Pentax ME Super. I have just checked the specs for the K-1 camera and the viewfinder image magnification is 0.7. This compares very unfavourably with its counterpart for the Pentax ME Super which is, as I recall, 0.92, or thereabouts. I am not sure what the device limitations that impose this great discrepancy but I wish it could be fixed somehow.

While recognising that most here are younger and more technically demanding than me I also believe there must be more than a handful of others who would share my requirements.

I really am full of admiration for your camera. (The photo is good, too!). I think that sometimes with machines one can just get a "good 'un". Clearly, you did.
It seems that the camera takes on average roughly 300 shots every day. Gulp!

Now that would be just up my street, if the price was right, of course.....!
I only have Pentax film cameras at present. It would be rewarding, enjoyable and very cost-effective to use my existing (great quality!) manual focus lenses on a full frame, digital camera.

---------- Post added 04-28-18 at 01:08 PM ----------

My answer is that, for people like me, the attraction would be the ability to use our film era, manual focus lenses on a digital mount. I am not a pixel-counter, I can hold a camera quite steadily, I can focus a lens, and I don't go picture-making in downpours.

I suppose we all have our own life experiences and prejudices.
Here's my story in the context of film cameras:

- I own 3 Pentaxes (2 ME Supers, 1 MG). All were bought on e-bay. 1 ME Super worked and has continued to do so for a decade or so. The other ME Super did not, I knew from the outset it would need fixing. I had it fixed by the famous US-based Pentax repair man. It sat pretty much unused for four years then developed a wind-on fault and had to be fixed again. The bonny little MG has always worked. Cheap as chips and very loveable.

- I own 3 Chinon cameras (1 CG-5, 2 CP-9AF). The CG-5 I bought from a thrift shop for $6. It has always worked flawlessly. The CP-9AFs I bought on e-bay in separate options. They have always worked flawlessly. My impression is that the CP-9AFs in particular are very, very strong, as are their autofocus lenses, and in my view could possibly be reliable enough for use in a professional role.

I like ALL my cameras, Pentax and Chinon, they all have their different personalities. I just hope that if I exercise them and treat them with respect they will give me continuing good service.

Thank you so much for your help, Not a Number!

Since posting my request I did a search online and, maybe by coincidence, found a link to Garry's Camera. I just sent them an e-mail to get a rough estimate. I also sent an e-mail to Eric Hendrickson but he seems to be dedicated to Pentax only. Maybe I am wrong.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Repair and CLA service for Minolta camera

Hello all,
I am a Pentax and K-mount user and have several Pentax and Chinon cameras. However, on a whim I just acquired a Minolta XD-7 film SLR, a camera that enjoys a very good reputation in photographic circles.
The camera is not working and needs a thorough repair and CLA by a professional. I shall contact Eric Hendrickson but I don't think he will be able to help. Does anyone know a US-based service that would do a good job?
Thanks in advance for any advice or help!
