First look at Sony's A7r FF mirorless body

I understand how a Pentax user would be interested in this A7/A7r since Pentax currently does not have a FF camera. For the Nikon/Canon user looking for a economical FF, I fail to see the value in the Sony over a D600 or 6D. What am I missing?

Interesting blog post from Trey Ratcliff on why Nikon and Canon is failing

Anything can happen in five years time, however Nikon and Canon will be still around.

I find it interesting he left out the fact that mirrorless cameras sales are down 15% vs the DSLR 10%.

I would be interesting to see if/what they have to offer and if it would be adding to their portfolio or is it the direction of the industry.

I agree. Iím thinking someone got a little click happy filling in the category check boxes.

Unless they are tying to make it a little more affordable. Still would be way more than I could afford.

Looks to me that even at ISO 6400 the Nikon produces a more appealing image and the colors are more correct than the Pentax.

I guess itís all in which reviews you read. :) The reviews at photozone.de I think scored most of the Sony lenses at just OK, nothing great.

I agree and this would be the route I would take. The NEX-7 is a nice camera, but the Sony E mount lenses are a different story.

I read it as just another photog with a new toy in a Ken Rockwell kind of way. I guess image sharpness is not high on his priorities list.

I would agree. Reviewing my photos for the last three years show 1/2000 is my fastest. Also, if it is like the D600 with the extended ISO modes, ISO 50 would probably get the job done if needed.

If at all possible before spending any money, you may want to hook up your camera to a tv/monitor to see what the output will look like. The K-5 with HDMI out should do real good. My K-x, it was not to my expectations.

Who is the maker of that tripod in your picture? A good low profile tripod is what Iím missing right now.

Its been awhile since I used pk_tether, but if it allows for changing focus points along with the other camera settings, this is a big time saver when your camera is in odd positions.

It does not say in the manual, but I donít think the power source charges the battery. You have to flip a switch between using battery or power source. That kit you linked shows to have everything needed. Also, the included battery is a little large and has 1 lb. weight to it. I opted for the smaller batteries. I think they last for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Items I bought.

Congratulations on your purchase.

I disagree with your comments that the D600 is more toy like. It is built rather solidly and even has all that weather sealing mumbo gumbo.

Thanks. It could be because I have a Core2 Duo T7500 that LR4 try's to load more into memory. It definitely was showing memory constrained and adding more memory made a big improvement. I donít expect great performance on this computer by todays standards, but was surprised the difference between the two versions.

Thanks. Hopefully I can keep this computer going a little longer. :o

You probably donít want to see the Canon and Nikon ad flyers which come in my local Sunday News paper. Seems they are in there every week and have been for at least the last six months. I canít image the cost of that.

I would be interested in knowing if the application performance of LR5 is the same, better or worst than LR4. I had to double the RAM in one of my computers to 8 GB after upgrading to LR4 before the application was usable.

I definitely understand her frustrations. The K-x is a nice camera, but the amount of "almost in focus" shots were just too many.

Not sure what you think is top of the line, but many of the intermediate level cameras have the built in focus motor. The D600 has it.
