Sorry for my absence - actual and relative. Iíve just posted days of photos, but havenít yet had the wherewithal to get out of my head to check out everyone elseís work. Iíll get there.

Funeral was tough, but about as good as something like that can be, with much family around - some I havenít seen in donkeysí years. And I got to look at a whole bunch of old family photos, which was nice.

Lovely images. I totally get what you say about the magic disappearing when you ďcorrectĒ things in LR. Iím convinced that part of the character of any lens consists in how it departs from straight and (in that sense) ďcorrectĒ.

So, to sum up June...

I quite liked the jokers theme I set myself. Probably about half I feel happy with, as something a bit creative, rather than just a joker in front of, or stuck to, something.

The Sigma 30mm... welp. At the end of May I wrote: "Roll on June and the big, heavy, slow-and-sketchy-autofocus Sigma 30/1.4." Indeed it is big; it is heavy; AF is indeed slow and sketchy; bokeh often doesnít appeal to me - seems a bit jittery.

Those are the negatives. On the plus, 1.4 is pretty good to have - though nowadays I can really tell the difference stopping it down to at least 3.5. It can be sharp as a ridiculously-sharp thing that's been sharpened especially for the Sharp Things Day sharpness competition.

Beyond that ... I dunno really. It looks ok, if that matters, though it makes it all seem a bit chunky for me. Nothing much else to say.

My favourites from the month:

Fire After Ice by -Occasionally Focused-

Mšrchen by -Occasionally Focused-

Everybody wings go up... by -Occasionally Focused-

On the Fence by -Occasionally Focused-

At my fingertips by -Occasionally Focused-

And *still* trying to decide on next month's lens...

Iím in. Not sure what lens though. Maybe the Sigma again, without the joker thing. Maybe the plastic fantastic. Maybe ... dunno. Iíll have to think over the week.

Well 2/3 of my jokers month done. Itís proving quite a fun theme overall, though sometimes Iíve struggled to do anything I think interesting.

Wow! Big shift

Hmmm ... photo theme for today strikes me as a month late: spring/autumn - when it's already winter down here, and summer up there.

...

Just got an idea though...

So. May done; June looms.

I'm quite pleased, to be honest. The DA16-45 it was this month, and I fear I will damn it with faint praise.

It's a capable, serviceable lens.

I do really like the wider side of it - but that's down to the wider field, not the lens.

It's sharp enough.

Focus is reasonably quick and accurate.

Renders nicely. I'm not sure about colours, and how much of what I'm struggling with is changing conditions, how much is down to camera damage/upset from being dropped some months back (the metering's stuffed; why not the white/colour balance?), or how much is the lens. I also faffed about with it and was set to "daylight" for a while, which messed up some inside photos because I forgot about it and didn't change the setting...

I've just not felt a bond with it, or inspiration from it - though it is a perfectly good lens, and I'm glad I have it.

Roll on June and the big, heavy, slow-and-sketchy-autofocus Sigma 30/1.4. ;)

Probably the Sigma 30/1.4, Iím thinking at this point.

Now thereís an idea! Iíll get on and do that. [emoji106][emoji106]

Flickr reckons I don't follow anyone with photos.

And my attempts at uploading are big fails so far

And everything is super-duper slow

Theyíd be close to the same lens, Iíd guess.

Thatís a really good point, and one that really resonates with my experience - probably last month as well as this.

I also think that having spent quite a while taking photos almost exclusively with my iPhone - which is very good at making things look impactful when seen on the iPhone screen - the contrast is quite stark, despite so many other aspects of photograph and photography being orders of magnitude better with the ďrealĒ camera.

Needed to go wider this month. 16-45 should do it.

I think also - as I've noticed that I've unthinkingly done in March and in April - I'll include at least one karate-themed pic and at least one cards-themed pic per month.

Looking forward to the month.

So then. Second month back then. Takumar Bayonet 135 mm f2.5 then.

I've Singled this lens before - also in April as it happens (2016), as well as in February and July 2015.

I think it's a really nice lens. Build quality seems great, looks really nice ;). Has a strange integrated hood thing which I canít really see being long enough to make a significant difference to anything. It can make some lovely images, can be super-sharp, is quite easy to focus accurately (especially with the good old focus-confirmation beep), though the focus ring throw is long and slow. It's not that quick to get a photo with, and for instance, that lost me what this image could have been:

Focus missed by -Occasionally Focused-

Conversely, I managed to get some photos I really like. Probably my favourite of the month:

Marigolds and bee by -Occasionally Focused-

And:

Chilliní by -Occasionally Focused-

This was Explored and became my most-viewed photo:

Purple foliage by -Occasionally Focused-

However ... I really found myself getting fed up with the 135mm view on the world; it's far too narrow. Hence my choice for May: DA16-45.
