I think we all in general need to lighten up these days, and maybe I just need a good laugh, so my suggestion is "make me laugh"

Sounds like your father was a careful man. :) Thanks for sharing his ideas.

These days people never want to engrave for the sake of future resale. It's kind of strange that now we buy with the plan to sell and upgrade already in place, and no one really owns anything for good anymore. Companies aren't the only ones using planned obsolescence.

Personally, I can't imagine ever wanting to get rid of the Kx unless it falls apart. I know technology improvements compel, but I don't even want to let go of my two- cameras ago- Kodak DX7590 because it has it's own wonderful photographic charm.

I never even heard of Seagull!

Can't decide : Tamron 28-75mm or 17-50mm

Another fairly new Kx user here....

I chose the 28-75 because a little zoom is more important for my priority, which is mostly indoor people shots (at home and school). To get candids you need to be able to zoom a little, and it allows me to easily play more with DOF.

I do need to back up quite a bit for large group shots, but it works, and by far the majority of my shots are smaller groups and individuals. I've had it now for just a few weeks, and have used it for student shots for the yearbook (candids and club shots) and a family shower, and 28-75 worked great for me. (Although for Drama Club I was smashed up against the wall to try and get every inch of distance I could to get everyone in......).

I do love all the pictures I see from the 17-50 though, so I'd like to add that one to my kit too! :)

Thanks everyone. These are all very helpful tips!

Good ideas, thanks! Actually, the photo idea is something I hadn't thought of. I could just make a jpeg with my info on it using my PP program and transfer it to the card, so even if the camera is left without the bag there is inherent ID for an honest returner.

Insurance and the strap on the leg are good ideas too. Thanks!

Yes, common sense is key. I must make new habits! People are very distracting for me.

And I must hear the story about the extra animal or child! :p

Thanks. :)

After a life of P&S's, I now have the Kx, and three lenses. (Two kit lenses and the Tamron 28-75 2.8)

I know the total investment is not much compared to what some of you have, but for me, this is a large investment! I don't even wear expensive jewelry; too much to worry about. (Well that and it costs too much ; )

So with an upcoming trip, I'd like to know what if anything you do to your gear for security. Do you just have your name and number on your bag like any other travel bag? Do you have the camera itself in any way ID'd? I know it would do no good if someone wants to take it, but if I leave it some where or something......

I guess I just need any tips you might have on keeping the stuff safe when traveling with a family. (Kids are very distracting!)

Thanks!

I've seen many of your posts in the Tammy thread and have been very impressed. These are wonderful too, especially of the girl and the guitar player/curly red-headed child. People are my thing and what I want most to capture well.

I can see why the following is cult-like. The need to buy it just rolled in like an out-of-control semi and I didn't even know what hit me. It's such a relief to see these posts and know it might have been stupidly impulsive but also very smart. :D

I've been with Smugmug for years now and it's completely worth the yearly cost. Excellent in all aspects - display options and quality, and customer service, and sharing. I prefer Smugmug over the others because there are no size limits and I far prefer the display over the others.

I also back up on my external hard drives, but knowing all of my favorites are stored on a site I trust is important to me. I don't pay for the vault option. Having Jpegs stored there is enough for me. I did upgrade to Power Level last year so I could upload videos.

I just had to put an end to the story...
Got the lens on Monday, played with it at home a bit on Tuesday, and then today baptized it by fire today by taking it to school, one of the more challenging places for me historically. I do the yearbook and we needed more shots of 5th grade kids and the special needs classes. Took only the new lens on my KX, and snapped a bunch in two special needs classrooms, and a bunch more in the lunchroom of the 5th graders at lunch.

Oh my goodness! I could not be happier! It performed perfectly with the Kx! There were some misses sometimes with unintended DOF, but otherwise I could not be happier. I used P mode and flash most of the time to give myself better odds for sharper focus what with the moving subject matter and no time for adjustments. I just can't say how happy I am with this thing. The color, sharpness, contrast, and even the range worked perfectly for me. I've always wanted a good camera, and now with this lens at 47 I am finally getting the pics I've always wanted. I can't believe it!

Sorry to blather on, but this is just a dream come true for me after years of frustration. To all of you who assured me, you were SO RIGHT! I wish I could post some examples, but they are other people's children and I can't. But here's a heavily cropped example just to show how great the color and clarity are...

All is now forgiven Pentax forum and all Pentax forums and all Pentax info on the internet. : )

Those wet leaves...Good heavens I can't believe what this lens can do. (With a good photographer anyway, excellent work)

I've gone from guilt to eager anticipation and a feeling of,

damn right I should have this lens!

Thanks so much to everyone who responded! I am recovering a bit from my guilt and hatred for this place. ;) It's so good to hear from people who know their stuff that I've made a good choice, and what a relief that is! I just fell in love with the pictures I saw from it so I'm glad you all tell me I fell for the right one.

And the pictures posted, they are treasures. This is what I hope to get, so thank you all so much. I hope to get something to come back and post in this thread.

I saw these and thought they were great. I really want something that can get the job done in challenging situations. So many of my photos are inside, home and schools and Y's and rinks, so it helps to see something like that.

And yeah, you shouldn't have said that!
