I need (want) a long lens - Pentax FA* 600/f4 vs Sigma DG APO 500/4.5

Thanks to all that have replied and expressed an opinion. Pal's testimony as to the handling and trans-portability of the Pentax 600 speaks volumes, especially, since I am looking for lens to travel with. I do have a sufficient tripod and mount for the 600, but, it's not something I travel with on regular basis.

So, I am going with the Sigma, and should have one by the end of the week.

I would love to buy the Pentax, but those things are rarer than hens teeth at the moment.

With a trip coming up, it look like my only choice at the moment is the Sigma. Plus it being a good bit lighter, it might be better for travel, though I'm not sure how I would deal with either on a plane trip.

Just how does the Sigma stack up against the Pentax? And would I have any regrets buying one?

My fear is that once I lay out the funds for the Sigma, a Pentax would be come available.

Thanks Adam. That's kind of what I thought.

That thought has crossed my mind........

Well August did not work out well for me, so I'll give it a go for September.

Teens, hmmmmm.........

Guess I'll come in with my Samyang 14/2.8 on the K1 for this month.

Think I will give this a try again in August. I know there will be a couple of days where I will be out of commission and not be able to shoot. But I will contribute as I can.

For this month, I'm going with my K35/3.5 on the K1. Even though I have a FA35/2, and the FA* 31/1.8, I have been enjoying the process of slowing down and using manual controls these past couple of months.

You're right. That's the 'norm' for macro. But I want to shoot subjects other than what I would normally seek out. The other month where I participated in a 'Single in....' challenge helped me do just that.

Not saying that you won't see a flower or bug during the month on those days I get stumped looking for something different, but my goal is to look elsewhere.

I'm in and for this month I will be using my M 100 f4 macro. I'll also try to stay away from the obvious flower and bug shots.

Nature A couple from "Mystical Slot Canyon"

Or whatever the real name of the location is. We went on a short, late evening tour with an outfitter in Kanab UT to this slot canyon. While nowhere near the level of Antelope Canyon in Page AZ, but it was a pleasure to not have to fight crowds (herding cats as I have heard that experience described). Lighting could have been better, but we managed to get a couple of keepers:

K3, FA 24-90, 1/30th @ f3.5:

K1, FA* 31, 2.5 sec @ f14:

Sorry to hear about that. Hope you are able to recover the lens. I would be crying if I lost my 77 (price aside, it is one of my favorite lenses).

This stuff happens.

We were in Canyonlands a few years ago at the Visitor's Center. Someone come in and informed the ranger that they just found a camera at one of the overlooks and placed a shiny new Nikon D-200 on the counter. At least it was found by someone who was apparently honest and wanted to do the right thing.

Thanks for all of the comments on the photo. It is growing to be one of my favorites from the trip.

I had forgotten that I used the K1's pixel shift resolution for the shot, and as such, I discovered a number of artifacts from people moving around in the original image. They don't show up so much on the downsized copy I had on Flickr, but I did a first cut edit job to remove these artifacts and uploaded an updated copy.

Was hoping to photograph Balanced Rock in Arches National Park against the Milky Way one evening last week. But, the Moon and clouds had other ideas and ended up with this instead.

Cropped, with the foreground dodged for emphasis.

RRS L-plate for K-1

Here's the answer about the small screw that is included with the RRD BK1-L:

"That small M3 screw is a safety stop screw to use with the base plate - since your BK1-L is a modular L-plate set the base can be used alone.

When using just a base plate, and tipping the ballhead into portrait mode, that screw would sit at the top end of the plate and help prevent it from sliding out of a partially opened clamp by accident.

If you're using the L-plate you don't really need to worry about using that screw, since portrait mode is achieved with the clamp still upright. "

Tan68,

The mount(s) for the QD strap is engineered in the bottom of the plate. Those two holes at the opposing corners is where the strap attaches without any other necessary hardware.

I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of that small hex screw. Maybe I should contact RRS for an answer.
