Is it time to jump ship? (Upgrading k100d)

Wow! Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions and opinions. This has been incredibly helpful. I am going to cross the Canon off the list. I have delved more into this whole thing now with the guidance given by everyone, and I am leaning heavily towards a lumix or the Sony a6000--yikes pricey. I hadn't considered the mirrorless option and after reading all your responses and researching a bit more, I think it may be our best option. We are super active outdoorsy, and also city-traveling, type people and I often don't bother to bring my camera because I don't want to deal with carrying it, but I always wished I had it instead of my phone or our point-n-shoot because of the better image quality. ...and I also just like the feel and the experience of shooting with my DSLR.

Of course, I had also been convinced into upgrading to the k-70 as well, so it looks like there may be 2 new cameras in my future ;-)

My k100d has made me VERY happy for, wow.... 10 YEARS NOW! But I am wanting to get a new camera that will shoot video as well, and some in the family are interested in vlogging. I figured I would just get whatever is today's equivalent of the k100d, assuming it would do what I want, but it looks like that's not the case? I was literally about to push "buy now" on Amazon for a k-s1, but something made me decide to look into it further and I realized there is no autofocus in video mode, which seems impratical, as I think even our cheap travel Olympus TG-860 autofocuses when taking video?

So now I feel stuck, which led me back here.... 10 years later! I hate to jump from pentax because I have some great lenses and I would have to start all over again, but the Canon t6 is really tempting as it's reasonably priced and seems to do everything I want it to do. Any thoughts?

We have the same exact kit! Flash photography is not out of the question, but I did give it a shot at a couple games and the results were NOT good, IMO. Bright in the front and way dark in the back, red eyes... also I worry about distracting the kids and annoying those around me.

But I will say that I haven't really learned the flash ins and outs, because I don't really the looks of a flashed photo.

I have no comparison. She just got the d90 and cheering is over. I have only used my 18-250 at cheering competitions so far. (This is the first year she decided to cheer, before this she only played field hockey and outdoors I have been nothing but happy with my camera and lenses)

The focal length is too long, but also is hunts CONSTANTLY and is just annoying because sometimes even when I think I did get the shot... it's blurry once I get it on the computer screen (not all the time, as I mentioned, when it's on, it's ON). Nicole's d90 with the Sigma lock right and and shoot right away... I have never noticed the hunting like I do with mine... BUT... the AF assist light on the d90 could be a big part of that too.

And you are right about all the action in one place. I may try your idea out before plunking out all that cash. Fortunately I have til next fall to agonize over this decision!

It seems to be matter of changing the way I shoot (shoot RAW, MF) and saving money or spending a lot of money to keep shooting in the lazy way that I enjoy ;)

I am talking about different situations. The FA35 I think would be wonderful for our evening get-togethers and dinners out... always very low light... always a challenge with my camera w/ my 50mm 1.4.

The Cheerleading thing is a whole other ball o' wax ;) THAT is where I will be needing to "plunk down a lotta cash" for a 2.8 zoom at some point.

I am not sure where anyone got the idea that I was comparing my 18-250 with her 30mm 1.4 -that would be nutty!! I never said that at all, I said...

"The d90 has a Sigma 30mm 1.4 on it... her camera pretty much lives with that lens on it, she LOVES it. My 'equivalent' to that is my pentax 50mm 1.4"

I KNOW that the 18-250 is not a good lens for the cheerleading stuff, but a 50mm in a gymnasium where I don't know where I will be sitting will not work at all. Neither will a fixed focal lens because I am not just shooting the action on the mats, but also the action going on around me in the bleachers.

I really do not enjoy my 50mm, it hunts like CRAZY... and I get way more blurry shots than with any other lens I have ever had. When it DOES lock on, the pics are sharp and fantastic!

Wow... lots of questions and ideas here!

The exif data is available on all the photos, you have to hit the "more info" link on the right hand side to see it. The WB is off... and at that particular auditorium I tried custom, I chimped every setting, and even "fixed" it in PP, but still didn't get it quite right and decided to just live with it. I am not a big fan of post-processing... in fact, I find it tedious and annoying. And, yes, I shoot jpg. I know I would have more "fiddle room" if I shot RAW, but I really hate all the post-processing and since this is my hobby... I think I should enjoy it. (I do shoot RAW if I am taking photos for other people, or something 'important.')

The d90 has a Sigma 30mm 1.4 on it... her camera pretty much lives with that lens on it, she LOVES it. My 'equivalent' to that is my pentax 50mm 1.4 (which is not my fav lens, not wide enough for me and feel like I have to step away from the fun to snap a pic). I can't really compare any side by side because since she got the d90, I haven't bothered to bring my camera since I know she will have hers and I don't want to fight with mine all evening.

I definitely am pondering trying to start by getting a 2.8 zoom lens. I know my 18-250 is not optimal for the cheerleading events, but my 50mm isn't either and I'd rather have the zoom in case I can't move around a lot, so that's what I have been using. I had thought about that before, but I don't want to waste money trying something that and then ending up switching anyway.

My best friend recently got a nikon d90 and I am in love. She is able to get so many shots that I could never get with my k100d. I had been feeling frustrated and limited with my camera even before she got the d90 as my daughter has become a cheerleader and my camera REALLY struggles in the low/crappy light of school auditoriums and I have to either accept a lot of grain or motion blur. Examples Our family and friends also do a lot of evening activities and hanging out and the d90 captures those moments with ease. Last night she had her ISO at 2000 and the pics were bright and crisp and not at all grainy.

And I know that it's gimmicky and a bit of a controversial "issue" ...but it was pretty fun last night to be able to snap great photos, and then when someone was attempting to dance like Beyonce, be able to switch over to video and take a little movie ;) The movie thing is NOT a deal breaker for me... but it is kind of fun!

I pondered going for the k20d so that I could keep my lenses... and I do love being a Pentaxian, but I have been told that the k20d won't make me happy and do what I want it to either. Looking at the ISO tests on DPreview and other sites seems to confirm this.

I know that none of us have crystal balls... but as I am no urgent rush to get new gear, do you think I should wait awhile and hope that Pentax comes out with a camera that makes me squeal ;)

I too have... and love... this lens! It pretty much lives on my camera. It does 'creep' and it does have vignetting on the low end, but neither of those things bother me. ...And the vignetting only really shows up 'badly' in certain situations.

Here's one at 250mm...

And here's one at 18mm showing vignetting...

I am NO expert by ANY means... but I have the 50mm and borrowed a 43mm. Here are my comparisons... Oh, also I was comparing the k100d to the k10d, so be sure to read the captions.

comparing the 50mm, 43mm, k10d and k100d

In the end, I saw little difference in IQ in the photos that I took, and the 50mm seemed to hunt for focus a bit less. Personally I didn't see enough improvement in the 43mm to justify the much higher price tag... maybe the difference shows itself more in landscape photography?

I have the Pentax version and I LOVE it! I have a lot of pictures with it, since I really only use that lens and my 50mm.

Here's a low light one I took just to compare to my 50mm...

Here are a bunch of indoor photos from Easter... (ignore the ones outdoors because I am a moron and forgot to change the ISO, so they are all crap!)

And here are a bunch outdoors

I pretty much only use my FA 50mm 1.4 and my Pentax DA 18-250mm. I have some manual lenses that I hang on to to play with now and then, but for everyday use those 2 lenses cover everything I need.

That lens pretty much LIVES on my camera!! I LOVE IT!!

It can be pretty unforgiving though! It will show you every wrinkle, every speck or dirt, and in our house... the fact that no matter what we do... there is always dog hair EVERYWHERE! ;)

I have never noticed any PF, and I take pics in front of windows all the time. I think this photo would definitely have shown some PF if it was an issue with all copies of the lens...

I think I did. When I first got my k100d I was buying like crazy and always looking for the next lens to get.

At the moment I am perfectly happy with my 18-250 and my 50 1.4. I also still have a few of the manual lenses I bought when I had LBA, but they are just waiting for me to sell them at this point. The only lenses I may like to have at some point in life are a fisheye, and a macro lens... but I am in no rush for those.

I don't need a ton of lenses that I am only going to use once a year or so. And I don't want to spend 3 hours trying to decide which lenses to take with me when I go somewhere.

I have had my k100d (my 1st DSLR) for around 7 months and I am VERY happy with it. Ken from this forum (regken) was nice enough to loan me his k10d for a week or so to give it a test drive. I liked the k10d very much, but not enough to feel the need to upgrade anytime soon. I liked the quieter shutter of the k10d, and more flexible options in choosing shutter speed and aperture. I also liked the being able to scroll through the WB options ON a photo to see which was right. I like the smaller size of my k100d (though the k10d was not as 'huge and heavy' as I thought it would be), and I like the quality of jpgs that I get sooc. Yes... I shoot jpg... oh the horror!, I know ;)

If I was buying new, and the price difference was 100 or less... I would get the k10d. But any more than 100 difference and I think I would go with the k100d and keep it until I felt limited with it.

I don't like to use flash, indoors I use my 50mm 1.4 most of the time and have the ISO cranked up to 800 or even 1600 (but I have the k100d, so less noise at 1600). I use the highest speed and aperture that I can get away with to reduce bluriness.

That does look like a great bag, but with that big logo on it, I would be hesitant to get it as it screams "THERE IS AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA IN HERE! PLEASE STEAL ME"

I know that a 'pro' thief knows what all the camera bags look like, but a teenager looking for a thrill and a little extra cash doesn't.
