Photoshop Elements-$65-Daily Deal at B&H 01/16

If you're a teacher or student... I always think buying the Photoshop/Premiere Combo is the way to go (79.99). It is such a great package deal with a lot of really great features, especially if you're just getting started with editing photo (photoshop)/video (premiere). If you already have previous versions though, as someone who has been using them since 11, they're pretty much the same (especially on the video side).

However, I don't think that it quite replaces the capabilities of LightRoom. This, combined with ON1 (Lightroom replacer w/some Photoshop qualities, 2018 version was pretty cheap when I got it $50 one time payment), and you can do a lot of damage out there.

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM II Firmware Update Help for my K-1???

Just to Update...

I called the Gentec International people that K6-III suggested in Canada... and they seemed perfectly fine with doing the firmware, even going so far as to offer the potential change of mount, for he 'scratch' defect (that I haven't really experienced on the K-1 so far). He said how easy of a fix it should be (much like many of the other affiliates in USA, prior to looking at the service and seeing that SIGMA had a 'hold' on that service). It all changed however, once I mentioned that I lived in Boston, MA. He said that I would need to speak with SIGMA USA (He said it was because of the complexity and problematic exchange with USA-Canada trade rates/exchanges). After telling him what I experience with SIGMA-USA and the different affiliates. He said that he didn't have any clue why Sigma would have that stance and that it was news to him. He said he would get to the bottom of this, and that he would get to back to me once he got an explanation.

So we'll see. I almost wonder, if I would have a location in Canada for him to send, could I send the lens, and then potentially have someone on the PForum in Canada to send it to... who can then send it to me. He seemed nice and very knowledgeable about the mechanism for the process.

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM II Firmware Update Help for my K-1???

Hello,

I have recently got a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM II... it seems like it's a really great lens...

However, sadly when trying to use the lens on my K-1... it causes my K-1 to simply lock up, and become unresponsive. I believe that it might need a firmware update in order for it to work. I contacted Sigma USA (in NY), and they informed me that they no longer perform firmware updates for Pentax cameras and that there is nothing that they can do. Contacting all of the affiliated repair places (in America anyways) have said that they can perform it, but Sigma has directed them specifically not to do so.

Anyone know of a possible fix for this problem??? It seems like a great lens, and I just want to be able to use it on my K-1.
Any helpful options are appreciated!
Thanks,

Easier/Better way to Start Video: K - 1

On my K-1 I flip the 'mode' on the dial (camera to video picture)... if that makes sense. I don't think there's another way to activate video (?). On my K-5 you rotate the mode dial to video, and it's a little bit more reliable to start/stop. In terms of circumstances... it does appear to be start easier during better lighting, but I think this is more because it's easier to find focus (which feels lika a requirement before a video can start). I've tried it with different lenses, and the performances is generally the same. I normally use it with a Tamron 24-70 2.8. Sigma 35 1.4, since these are normally what I have on... For more Telephoto, like Tam 70-200 2.8 (during events), it rarely starts the video. It will just search through the focusing, but never settling on a focus and never beginning... if that makes sense?

Currently with my Education Program, and I'll try these once I get a chance. Thanks to all those who give, continue to give feedback

Hello,

I have had my K-1 since it was released... loved shooting stills/pictures. However, one thing I liked about the K-3 is that it had a Red record button to start/stop video. Unfortunately, I find starting a video unreliable! If AF is turned-on, it has to hunt (literally the entire focus range) to find 'focus' before it is able to begin to record. Even if you turn AF off... it still has a problem activating in any reliable way. The same thing seemed to happen with my K-5.

I was wondering if there was a way to make it so that when I press the shutter, a video records from that point? Or a more reliable way to start it... have more control.

Best,

Film Camera that is like modern SLRs??

Hello,

This may seem like a silly question... but I was wondering if there happen to be a Pentax camera that handles similarly to a DSLR?? Not just a film camera suggestion, but something that has some of the handling as well (scroll wheel(s), AF, etc). I realize that there are many features that are 'digital' in nature. Not asking for it to be like my K-1 or K-5...

For context, I have a K1000, Super ME, and ZX-5 (does give AF above)... but I was allowed to play a bit with a Canon EOS 1, and really felt like it had modern controls... a bit more quality. Was trying to think if Pentax made something similar??

To answer lady's question... battery grips are really nice! Though they add weight, they actually do a great job of adding better balance for lenses (especially telephoto). It also gives a bigger grip for people with bigger hands, allows for easy vertical shooting... so Ergonomics gets a big boost, which is saying something for Pentax. You also get 2x the battery, and inside the grip I find iti convenient that you can store an extra SD card inside. It comes in handy when on a shoot and you fill up all your cards. This is a really good deal. I paid the same, but for a knock-off brand (still has same function, no weather sealing though)... plus you get a genuine battery which is 40-50 dollars already. Those batteries are nice, because they can also be used in the K-3s and K-1, if you ever intend on upgrading.

You can also pre-order it on Amazon... and if you look on the right, it says there is a possibility of getting it between Oct 23 to Nov 27th. I ask, just because it doesn't really make sense to purchase compatible flashes (ex: AD200) if I can't get the transmitter before then.

Any indication when this is coming out??

Also, I have non-godox flashes. Is there a way to use this transmitter with them? A pocketwizard connection of some kind, maybe. I was planning on getting the AD200, but I also want the option to use my other flashes too.

I'll say this... they definitely look rugged. At least with the picture next to the d850, that was my initial reaction (think it might be the skin on it). Looking at the British/euro pricing for Z6... Am I reading this correct?? 3399 euro = 3942 US (body only), 4058 (lens kit), 4638 (24-70 kit), 4755 (24-70 kit + FTZ = lens converter?).

That body price for entry is a full-stop on its own. Funny thing (if true/accurate), is that the body-only option is $1000 more than Sony a7r3... same in terms of the 24-70 option. [sony has no 'kit' lens option]. I wonder how they justify such a big difference difference? You have to believe that the price will plummet downward.

---------- Post added 08-22-18 at 01:44 PM ----------

Yes, I have read that as well... but doesn't it only Auto-focus the lens, as a correction. You don't have any of the advanced features (ex: eye-AF, etc)?? It simply adjusts the lens, moving the lens closer/further away from the body (as I understand it)?

Would love to see/read something to the difference? (Like many I imagine) I have a bunch of modern Pentax glass, and I feel like my lens lineup is very much complete (I really can't think of any instance that I can't handle)... want the mirrorless features (or close to, like Canon operates on Sony at least), with those lenses.

[not sure how to quote people]

reh312 Asked: "What does the d850 have that K-1 doesn't?"

I'll first say that, the things mentioned below are really just nitpicking an already amazing camera. For most needs, in the realm of stills: landscape/astro/studio/street, the K-1 checks off most boxes, and adds boxes I didn't know I wanted or didn't know was possible. This is not just true for the K-1, but for most of the digital Pentax cameras I have owned (K-5, K-01)... all of this, while still having the best build quality, and an ergonomics that is so amazing that it almost forces me to take one more picture. The Ergo of the Nikons have always felt clunky - I have a d200; and the pint-sized nature of Sony a6000 has always felt a bit unnatural - an amazing camera for everything that it does!.. but I have always felt like it was a camera where I can say they quite literally fit everything in, but the feel in the hand is just not the same. If you destroyed every camera in the world, and said I could only use a K-1, I would be a very happy person... no problem using it into the infinite future.

1) Buffer/FPS:
If there is one complaint that I have about the K-1, it is the buffer/FPS. When shooting landscape/astro/studio/portrait/headshots, It rarely becomes a problem at all. But put yourself in an environment with anything moderately fast paced: Event, Concert, Graduation Ceremony, Dance, Sporting events, etc)... and you bump up against the limits frequently. It doesn't mean that you can't use it in/during those moments, but it does mean that there are some moments where you can't take pictures, that you need to be more economic with how you take photos, or techniques/approaches aren't available (spray+pray is not a thing).

2) Silent shooting:

This is mostly a DSLR-centered thing, as I believe that the d850 is really the only thing to present a usable method to do this. This is very appreciated when in a setting that is very quiet, or an environment where sound comes from one location. That mirror-slap is noticeable, and it can sometimes be/feel like a pin-prick depending on the setting. I've gone to concerts (ex: acapella) and when others use DSLR, it feels a bit disjarring. IMO, this is really the only feature that really matters DSLR vs Mirrorless. All of the other things, I believe that DSLRs can or will do as well (aside from EVF vs Optical [and how DSLR LView is bad all of the time ATM], but I find that silent shooting to be a real luxury. It is something that I find nice when shooing on my Panasonic g85 (and Sony a6000 before I gifted that to my sister-in-law).

3) 4k Video:
This one, also not really important. If I never get a camera with 4k, I will be fine... but it does mean that my K-1 will only be regulated to a stills camera, or a 2nd-shooter. This is one of the main reasons I purchased the Panasonic g85 (really to just get a camera with some mirrorless approach. I don't believe that Sony counted the time because it did not have the touch command or IBIS features on the same level). I continue to wish that Pentax/Ricoh had purchased whatever tech/patent that Samsung gave up when they made the NX-series cameras... seems like the problem would have been instantly solved.

One thing I really don't care about: Auto-Focus Rant. (But having a touch screen to choose focus would be amazing!!)

I'm sure there's a horse someone I have just got on top of... but I mostly put this here because I think that Pentax AF gets a bad rep. I think the complaints that some people complain about, simply means that you haven't learned how to use that specific camera (or type of camera). Focus/recompose, or the need to, is not a flaw in the camera! It's just how you have to take the picture that you want. All because the camera won't give the same results, if you use it the same way as a different camera, is not the camera's fault. It is nice to have more features (Pentax, please add more, and make them further away from the center!). But the statement that Pentax AF is not as good as other cameras (very true), doesn't mean that it doesn't do the job... and do the job quite well IMO. As much as I am impressed with capabilities of the g85/a6000, I don't think there has been a moment where I have felt... if only I had more focus points. I find in moments when the AF doesn't get it, I just switch it to MF and peak the focus in.

Those are pretty much the main things really... not a lot of things I know. As I hope the above states, a lot of these things are luxuries. One thing I appreciate about Pentax, is that it forces you to really think about your technique as you use your equipment... while also preparing you for all instances. Rainstorm/snow/trip and dunk your camera in the sea... yep, Pentax has got you. Green Button is the greatest thing ever made!!! I will tell anyone, they should consider Pentax for this feature alone. Gives you the freedom, to explore manual settings... but fall back on the auto-features when you feel unsure. I owe the progression of my photography to this ability alone.

The last thing I'll say (sorry for super-lengthy responses... probably why I don't post as much on here)... is that I feel that the K-1 boils down to a d810... with IBIS, astrotracer, horizon correction, wifi (I don't believe d810 has it), Pixel-shift, Green Button, 3rd scroll wheel, focus peaking, rugged body design, superior ergonomics IMO ... all for almost half the price. The only drawback I see, is giving up 1-2 FPS. Not bad, not bad at all. But I don't think I can say it is a d850, with those same things.

I do like the look of the upcoming Nikon z6/z7... funny thing about mirrorless tech, is that they're going to start creating cameras that has IBIS in the body... but for some reason they can't/won't put that tech in their DSLRs. Mirrorless will prove that they have the capabilities.

I still wonder if any of the companies can offer something even close to the value of what Sony did with the a7iii. That thing was quite the gauntlet to throw down to challengers. I think it was priced to cut the market, and there's just no way this far in development that either of the companies can do anything to offer the value nor the price. I have faith that they'll be able to make cameras as good, but not for the same price (price of coming late).

However, I think this 'Mirrorless War' makes me hesitant to purchase anything at all!! The 'war' is just beginning. Not sure you'd want to invest in the guns at the beginning, when you know things will ramp up until the end. Sony entered, Nikon will announce, and then Canon will be next. Competition helps everyone then... so I think the next 2-years the features will be even better, and pricing accordingly to who is left over. I keep hoping that some company gets to a place, where one company (I really don't care) can create a mirrorless option (not sure I care as much about sensor size either) that accepts Pentax glass w/adapter, yet keeps it's Mirrorless features (AF, EVF, 4k, etc). I will also accept if a company requires some kind of 3rd-party support to make this a reality. (I think there is something outdated about Pentax lenses that prevents this from happening, probably why there are so few Nikon adapters too) Then they can truly take my money!! I will continue to wait patiently.

Maybe when the dust settles, Pentax will finally come up with something like that... it doesn't feel like a difficult ask. Pentax is usually a bit behind in terms of tech, so in 2-years they should have the ability, no? (I truthfully don't think Pentax even cares about mirrorless, and the aforementioned K-01 and late introduction of K-1 only forces them to focus more and more on DSLRs... the real question IMO, is when will they come out with a DSLR that matches the d850? That will pretty much erase my mirrorless need)

Rescue/Unstick my Hoya CPL???

Hello,

I have been using my Hoya Circular Polarizer (link below)... really amazing, and love the quality for the value.

I purchased a 77mm, so that I would be able to use the CPL on all of the my lenses, with the use of a step-up rings. However, after using said step-up rings my Hoya CPL is now stuck on the 77mm ring. Because of the way that CPLs are made, when you try and spin the CPL, it simply rotates on the housing... which I imagine is making it difficult for me to apply enough pressure to the ring to get it off. I don't have a problem with the step-up rings that link to this ring. In truth, I can (and still do) use the CPL as intended as none of my lenses are 77mm (72 is the biggest).

Was just wondering if anyone had a remedy for when they have a something stuck to a ring?? Another potential remedy might be just cutting the ring off in order to get to the CPL, but I'm hoping to go that far.

Thanks,

I personally really like the Olympus TG-860/870 series. It doesn't have 4k and I believe slightly lower resolution (20 vs 16), but it does have wi-fi... and the best part about it is that it has a flip-screen (pretty sure the only one that can do this). I find that to be extremely helpful, especially underwater. It's also about $100-150 cheaper...

I personally own the TG-860, and think it is the best, in terms of quality and function

Panasonic G85 Help!!! - Crooked Sensor

Hello,

I was using my Panasonic G85 the other day, when I realized that the viewfiender/pictures had a slant at the bottom of it. I thought maybe it might be a problem with the lens, but further inspection revealed that not to be the case. Possibly a problem with the IBIS, but it appears to be working. Then, after looking at the body/sensor without the lens on, and you can visually see that the sensor is visibly off a bit. I don't understand what changed between now and the last time, or why you would want your camera to be able to change it's sensor position...

I was wondering if anyone had an explanation or a way to fix it????
Would be a big help!

Hello,

Recently, I went out shooting some sports for the school that I teach at, and at some point I appear to have lost one of the screws that holds on the plastic 'protection sleeve' on the AF/MF clutch (not sure if that description makes sense?), near the top. I was wondering if it were possible to replace said screws or if anyone else had a solution. All of the other screws are fine, just that one, and it doesn't appear to be affecting any of the pictutes... so far.

Thought I'd reach out...

I'm so very confused, if the pictures just posted to pentaxrumors is correct... I literally just took out my K-1, just to make sure I wasn't seeing things. This looks identical in every way to the camera I currently have in my hand. Looking over the specs, besides a boost in ISO performance, maybe a slight improvement on Pixel-shift (which I truly didn't ask for)... I fail to spot the key difference. What am I missing?? People keep comparing this to the K-5ii release, but removing the AA-filter was a big deal, and the improvements to ISO were very needed. This literally feels like the same camera. I think ISO can be difficult to spot, especially in a camera that already had amazing ISO control and dynamic range... Is this really what has delayed development of a APS-C or Medium format successor??... 'say it ain't so Pentax, say it ain't so'...
