Signed up for the on-line photo course out of Australia. So far the big thing I've gotten out of it is that I don't need to worry about a lot of settings since I shoot RAW anyway. Also, the Kelby 5-part series arrived today, and I'm about half way through book #1. Oh - and I've taken quite a few crappy photos while playing around with the settings on my K30. Woo hoo!

Holy schnikies! All you folks are awesome. I really appreciate the considered advice. I do have a couple books, but I find watching, listening and playing along really make things sink in for me. Yeah, just getting it off auto is that first, big step. I will definitely look into all of these. Thanks so much, everyone.

Folks:

Not sure if this is the exact forum I should be posting in but. . . I'm tired of being ignorant. I use my K30 to mostly take PR photos. Everything's in focus, everybody famed medium, dial set to Auto. ::sigh:: I want to be more artistic with my camera, use it with less than 20 flood lamps at once. I'm tired of relying on either a bright day or Lightroom. I'm ready to play with light and shadow, content, and all that other fun stuff.

What I'm looking for is some handholding, I guess. Either a pre-recorded video class covering the K30 specifically and photography in general, or a Pentax "expert" - someone who knows more than me and can communicate it - who's willing to work with me for a few hours until I can get stuff through my thick skull.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

I actually took several shots of the tree, each with slightly different settings. Processed and reduced in size in Lightroom 5. The lights are purple and blue, but unless I selected "daylight" balanced, the purple lights all but disappeared. Not meant as a great shot, but I was really surprised that I didn't have to combine 2 shots - one with a good tree, and the other with a good fire. Camera seems to like ISO of 3200 - defaults to it a lot. Or maybe I just spend a lot of my life in the dark. :D

I'm just about done with a week of tourist shots with my new K30. I have a K10 which came with an 18-55 kit lens, so I got the 18-135 with this one. Up to now, I've made do with just a few lenses. For what I shoot - which is usually either products on a table or people standing around shaking hands - the 18-55 was fine. Kinda.

If that didn't get me in close enough, I switched to my 70-300 Tamron (which is probably the least expensive lens I own and which, I think, gives me the sharpest shots). I used the 70-300 at the zoo & safari park here in San Diego this week to get me in close to the animals.

But it's been those times where I wanted something in between the 55 max and the 70 min that frustrated me. I either have to move in closer than I want, or I can't get far enough back to fit everyone in. I'm aware that most subjects I shoot wouldn't be considered "art shots" by any stretch of the imagination. Most of my shots this week were buildings, or my wife, or my wife in and around buildings. And I'm finding that this latest lens lets me shoot her across a table at a restaurant, or zoom into the name on a ship, equally with ease. I really think that this is going to be my daily lens for quite some time.

Granted, most of the shots have been edited on my notebook with the crappy (for photography) screen, so I'm probably missing any number of flaws in my shots. But so far. . . yeah, I think this lens is turning out to be good for what I do.

The first week of October, I'll be following a group of Okinawan martial artists around, shooting their vacation (and official visits to local dignitaries). I plan on using this lens almost exclusively. The fact that it's weather sealed makes me feel okay about our impending visit to Niagara Falls.

Anyone else have experience with this as their daily lens?
