Waffles, I completely agree with you. This was the nucleus of my reaction to your remark. (It is never the fault of the photographer, so it must be the gear!)

Like the down to earth presentation of one of the best features of the Pentaxes! No embellishments or the presenter taking the center stage as often happens. Great!

Then the case could be that the AF fine tuning went wrong somehow. I used this method "https://testcams.com/blog/2015/09/22/dottune-autofocus-fine-tuning-in-under-5-minutes/" and it went well. Also did you set the AF fine tuning to all lenses or just this particular lens? There is a chance that it is a camera problem and to know for sure you must try it out with another lens. And of course use LV to cover all possibilities where thing can go wrong.

That is not normal behaviour. I think it is a bad copy and I would return it. Do you have problems with another lens on your K-3 III?

If I look at your wish-list I would get lost too. Sometimes it is worth knowing why you want a tripod or a backpack or anything else you mentioned. What are you going to do with it. As for the camera just buy it and buy the DFA 28-105 with it, it is just such good and capable team. Just get to know your new companion and from there extend your wishlist.
These are my two eurocents!

Tamron 500mm f/8 SP Mirror (55B) problem

Perhaps this kind of lens is not suited for moving targets. I have 500mm mirror as well and I can only take a good picture with a static object and with that plane I can imagine you moved with it to keep it in the picture. And the second one I do not know, perhaps too dark and a slow shutter-speed?

How to get Faststone to recognise my K3iii as an external drive

Simple thing about USB is that you can use any cardreader, because USB is always backward compatible. What really makes a difference is the speed of the card and of course the processor in the camera.

KP possible shutter issue?

Strange conclusion! If the malfunctioning happened after using the 150-450 (see his other thread about this camera in combo with the 150-450) it is most certainly the lens that caused it. So I would not blame the KP-body. Could also be that there is something in the combination that caused this.

How to get Faststone to recognise my K3iii as an external drive

Hi Steve, unfortunately it does not show the SD cards as storage devices, it shows your camera with the two slots SD1 and SD2. You can only copy contents to a computer (or from the computer to the camera) but they are not readable as storage devices (disc devices) by other programs, which is the main difference with MSC. With a smartphone you get a screen-message on the phone to choose between photo transfer (PTP), file transfer (MSC) or charging the phone. But with the new K-3 you have only one choice: MTP. Of course there is the CD-Rom setting but according to the manual you can only use it to install the DCU program, which means the camera must be seen as a disc drive (MSC protocol?). This discussion popped up a few times on the forum with people who had set their camera to PTP and got all kinds of malfunctioning while transferring pictures.

Pentax K1 manual is 140 pages when Pentax K5 manual is 380+ pages, why?

In the K-5 manual there are also about 90 pages of settings that have nothing to do with the camera. I guess they omitted these pages. And there are a lot of "favourite settings" and that kind of thing. I think that the K-1 manual looks like it has less information in it about the camera, but it seems a bit more to the point of how to use the camera. And maybe the writer thought that the learning curve is different assuming you have gone from K-7 all the way to K-1 you acquired all the necessary technique!:)

How to get Faststone to recognise my K3iii as an external drive

The right setting should be MSC like on your older camera's. But it is not there. Pentax designers forgot it, I think. MTP is different kind of protocol for copying files to the computer. MSC made your camera recognizable as a disk drive. With MTP you can only transfer files to your computer. Most programs like Faststone read from a disc which needs another kind of protocol than MTP or PTP. What you might try is setting the camera to CD-Rom (which after all is a disc-drive just like an SD card) and watch what happens, it turns your camera into a disc-drive and maybe your SD cards are seen as other cd-rom's as well (it looks like they used MSC protocol for that). If you set your camera to MTP it will be recognized but not as a disc-drive as you wrote and therefor other programs cannot read the contents of the SD-Cards.

It seems to me that this is a second thread about the same issue from Dirwood. Maybe the original owner still can get it repaired under warranty, but I still think the 150-450 is to blame.

KP acting weird with new lens

Then you own one of the last produced KP's. So 85 actuations is very plausible, as it is probably produced in October 2020. I have a KP from that date with a battery with the same production month of 2020. I guess or think that the fault lies with the lens, although both lenses you mentioned are screw drive lenses.

KP acting weird with new lens

An eleven years old battery may have seen a lot of use in its life. Whereas the other that came with the KP has seen too little. Both can malfunction because of how it was used. Do not know how old the KP and its battery is, and which of the batteries shows the most problems. I seem to remember that I read of this behaviour before with the 150-450, thought on this forum, but I am not sure. Cleaning contacts may help, but also cleaning of the contacts on the battery and, if possible, inside the camera. And of course, a new battery might help as well. I have this problem with a K-7 and even a new battery did not solve the problem. Only here it has to do with LV turned on in combination with the flash activated, though not exposing yet.
By the way, did you happen to see if on the LCD there is a message about the state of the battery? Mine says battery empty, even if it just has been charged (which does not mean that much, but makes no difference if it is the new or the old one). But the moment I turn the camera on the battery seems full according to the indication on the LCD.

DFA* 70-200 mm f/2.8 stopped auto-focusing ...

This kind of problem is why I hesitate to buy an expensive lens like this one. The same goes for the new K-3 Mark III. I know that you mostly read about the problems with camera's, lenses and so on, but I also find, however low the numbers, that I never read that Ricoh solved a problem even after the warranty expired. And Pentax as an independent company with their own repair service tried to solve problems, which they never do nowadays it seems. It is due to the extended warranty in my part of the world, European Union, that I sometimes buy a Pentax item. But I miss the service of old.
I currently own some of the indestructible ones, they are from the 70's and 80's, they are m's, a's and f's.

SMC DA 15 limited took a big hit

It is not a pretty sight. The last weeks I have seen so many maltreated lenses and camera's that it brought tears to my eyes. I would leave the threads alone and be happy with a disabled body so to speak. I fear that if you use pressure on that part of the filter thread you do not know what happens a bit further inside the lens. This 15mm is a hero, it saved your camera! And a tripod as well, please do not make this lens suffer anymore.

Best Replacement for DA 18-135?

I own the 18-135 as well and it does a great job. I own the 16-85 as well. I noticed that I put the 18-135 on a camera most of the time and the 16-85 only for a specific reason. If I were you I buy one again. Not only is it a lens with WR, but it works well with any modern Pentax as you can use in camera correction. Those two items won't work with a Sigma. And the 18-135 is quite affordable nowadays.

Cheap FF AF standard zoom: F35-135 vs FA28-70

For the prices you paid it is, as they call it, a no-brainer. Of course keep them both. Each one has its use as you described it. If it were lenses you could sell for an interesting sum of money, but they are not. The FA 28-70 is a very usable lens that I bought in 1996 just after it was released and it came with my MZ-5 as being the new "standard" lens (as Pentax recommended it). It is still a beautiful lens with no problems like borisleceto described. I never like the build quality of the FA series, too much plastic. The build quality of the F series I liked much more which looked a bit plastic, but were genuine metal. The F70-210 mentioned before is a good lens, but it is heavier than it looks like. The 28-70 is a nice light one.

Did he try an MILC as well? As a child I liked to look through a viewfinder, because it was so funny seeing everything so small. I also played with an old boxlike camera with the viewfinder on top. I did not make pictures, I just looked through or upon the viewfinder, or when the roll was changed my sister put a thin piece of paper (for rolling a cigaret) in place of the film and you could see everything upside down.

I did that too. Ricoh is dumping the KP with the grip which made it very affordable + Pentax bag and 32gb memory card for the price of the body alone. So I decided not to wait for the K-e3 Mark III and bought this set instead.:)

Thoughts: the irony of camera industry
Posted By AfterPentax Mark II

There is no irony in the camera industry. Only thing I notice is that some companies are not able to run this marathon. Unfortunately Asahi Pentax was the first to get behind, given the late arrival in the digital camera run (which was unfortunate for us Pentax addicts). That is no irony, it is a decision and a company has to live with the result of it. Same thing is, and perhaps that is irony, the declaration of Ricoh that they go for the DSLR and not for the mirrorless run. It gives the impression that Ricoh now realises that it is not able to run that marathon as well and opt for a leisurely stroll. I hope they made a decision that will last long enough to assure us of high standard SLR photographing in the near future, because, let us be honest, most of us are not of the youngest people that like to make and take pictures.:):p

I think the K-1 is the result of a careful chosen (planned) way to make flagship camera's: K-7, K-5, K-3 and finally a K-1. Only thing is perhaps they forgot that if people invested in APS-C lenses they will preferably continue in that line. The K-1 certainly is backwards compatible, but only to the level of the K-5. So eventually they had to come up with the K-3 Mark III, because of public demand. (that, perhaps, is irony) But you are right, without those excellent APS-C camera's there would not have been a K-1.

Small flash for KP

According to Metz Mecablitz they are almost the same, except for this: "Depending on the camera, the flash also offers a slave mode, for making wireless TTL flash. A suitable flash stand for switching the position of the flash aside the camera is now included." Metz nowhere specifies if one or the other AF26 is specific for use with APS-C or FF. I have looked it up in the manual and the AF1 is suited for both formats. It also more clearly indicated that it is useful for video instead of this descripition "lights up even motion picture photography.".
