Somebody should really create a website where they keep track of all these revolutionary breakthroughs in imaging technology or touted software features and checks back on them in 2, 5, and 10 years. It would be interesting to see which ones pan out and which ones were pure hyperbole.

You know your argument is finished when you fall back on "soul" in your dSLR. We're not even talking about a classic camera or a Leica, we're talking about a dSLR. Sheesh.

And now Canon and Nikon make brick'n' doughnuts? There is recognizing the strengths of Pentax cameras and then there is being delusional.

Adobe Creative Suite Goes Subscription Only

I'm going to continue using Lightroom since you can still buy it without paying a hefty monthly subscription. The rest of the Adobe suite is out of the question for an occasional user like me. Does anyone know of alternative software that can mimic the basics of Elements? Usually the only reason I leave Lightroom is for layers.

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM lens leaked?

This is the first 1.8 constant aperture zoom ever! Something no one has bothered to do before. Not Canon, not Nikon and not Pentax. I have no idea if this will sell well but as someone upthread mentioned, it's roughly the size of the Sigma 85mm with the hood attached. Not everyone is obsessed with the absolute smallest size, especially dSLR shooters.

Like I said previously, which product is going to draw more attention to Sigma? A 18-250 zoom from the old Sigma, or this new headline grabber? I've even seen this lens get press on some general tech sites that would never mention another Sigma lens.

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM lens leaked?

I think this is a halo product. Sigma doesn't necessarily need to move a lot of units. It's there to draw attention to Sigma and display what their engineers are capable of.

A while back, the president of Sigma noted in an interview that he didn't want to be viewed as a discount inferior brand for people who couldn't afford the OEM lenses. They wanted to compete directly with the best from Nikon and Canon. After the Sigma 35, the 120-300 f/2.8 and this lens, they are making a lot of very positive noise.

Building a Travel Kit

About the XE-1, I was hoping they would have released the X-Pro 2 by June in time for my trip. Based on the improvements to the X100s and Fuji's reputation for listening to their customers, I'm almost 100% Fuji will have worked out all the shortfalls and quirks of the X-Pro 1.

For me, the X-Pro 1 is a stop gap measure until the 2 comes out so maybe I should consider the cheaper XE-1.

Great suggestion! I was actually thinking about getting an M mount telephoto instead of the 55-200mm. I didn't know anything about M lenses though. Any other suggestions?

Interesting. I might look into the 18-55. The reviews look good. I guess I'm jaded based on the focal length, although it's a step above the usual kit lens.

Billingham Hadley Pro. It doesn't look like a camera bag, it can take a beating and will last forever. And stylish to boot.

I'm going to be travelling to Spain for a few weeks in June. I'm not going to be taking my D600 and f/2.8 lenses due to the size and weight so I'm looking to build a relatively light travel kit. I'm not quite at the point where I can live with a fixed lens so cameras like the X100s and the new Rico are out. My current thinking is:

X-Pro1 - I thought about the XE-1 but I really like the optical viewfinder although it's not a deal breaker.
35mm f/1.4 - normal
14mm f/2.8 - wide
55-200 f/something to something - for the occasional telephoto
Shutter release cable
A small light tripod with a built-in monopod
A 3-stop and 10 stop ND filter
Various accessories like lens cleaner, extra battery, extra memory cards, etc.
A non-conspicuous bag

Anything I'm missing? I'm open to other brands like Olympus but I don't know the lens equivalencies.

I've always said that as well. The difference between a D7000 sensor and the K5 sensor was so tiny as to be meaningless. But that didn't stop us from claiming the K5 had the best sensor in the world, full stop. If we're using the same margin to call a winner one way, it works the other way as well. That's all I'm saying.

Nikon 24-70 vs Pentax 16-50

All of them will still be great for the next ten years and all of them will likely be updated at lease once. So unless you're chasing the latest and greatest, you'll be happy with any of these for a very long time.

Nikon 24-70 vs Pentax 16-50

It's a fantastic lens. Great IQ and blazing fast AF. However if you want to save money, the new Tamron 24-70 is an excellent choice. One notch below the Nikon, but you save hundreds.

Also if you aren't in a rush, I have a sneaking suspicion that it is due for a replacement to compete with the new Canon. Perhaps VR?

I find it funny that when the Sony 16 MP sensor was at the top of DxOMark, people wouldn't stop pointing out that fact. Now that the sensor on a mid-level Nikon is beating it, all of a sudden DxOMark isn't that relevant anymore. Suddenly, it's a "synthetic" measure. Essentially what Cannon shooters have been saying for years, while us Pentaxians chuckled smugly.

I don't see the point other than from an aesthetic point of view. You can pick up a K-01 for $250 or a generation old Nikon and Canon entry level camera for the same price. They all have fully manual modes for those willing to learn. How much cheaper can Pentax make an FF camera?

I use a laptop as my main computer and don't have a desktop. What I did however was buy an external IPS monitor and calibrated it. Whenever I need to do any photo editing I connect my laptop to the monitor using the HDMI-out port. It's an option you might want to consider.
