Samsung S9 camera vs Pentax K1

The improvement of image quality is measurable relative to image quality of mobile phones, that's why DXO did not test and grade phones with the same scale as they do for cameras, otherwise the phone would be found at the bottom of the scale.
The confusion for most of us comes from the fact that we as mostly not use the image quality we get out of our cameras, there is some much information from a K1 image that the quality is clamped to the maximum that can be rendered by a small display because on a 4k (or HD) display of 10bit depth, a lot of the details and depth is lost. Yet, we don't always need excellent image quality, sometimes we want to take a snapshot to send it to someone as a mean of communication, and in that case, the camera phone is practical.

Samsung S9 camera vs Pentax K1

Recently I purchased a new mobile phone, the Samsung S9, choice was based on OS, CPU power, use experience and image quality comparison with some of the other best smartphones. Now, how do images stack up against Pentax K1? Interesting... At first, yes, the smart phone deliver stunning images when viewed on its own high res. OLED display, even zoomed in. Comparison with Pentax K1 images OOC Jpeg downsized to the same resolution as the phone and the phone images look as good as images from the Pentax K1. On the other hand, comparing the 36Mp output of the K1 to the S9, the K1 is vastly superior (K1 files are orders of magnitudes better than file from the S9). Also, the K1 is nearly unlimited with regards to the choice of focal length as opposed to the S9 being limited to a wide angle and a zoomed in option (not sure if this is a digital zoom or optical zoom). From that experience, I came to the conclusion that taking photographs with a smartphone is like digging the ground with a spoon while you could do it better and faster with shovel. There is a lot of advertisement for the Huawei P20 Pro, looks compelling at first, but to me it's more of a stretch of a phone into camera territory without quite reaching the capabilities of a true camera device. On the other hand, I find the software of my K1 rather rudimentary compared to the phone, and that doesn't mean I'd like to have my K1 bothering me with notifications and updates from the network coming all the time (annoying..). But it looks like the processing power of the snapdragon 845 is amazing.

MLU in HDR mode?

All times activation of SR efficiently reduce the effect of mirror and shutter induced vibrations. SR On is now my default setting on the K1 and I am very happy with the results. And, permanent activation of SR combined with setting slow option on ISO deliver the best images I have seen. Of course, making full use of SR is limited to scene without moving elements.

In live view mode, the mirror does stay up when capturing an HDR sequence, but the mechanical shutter is still opening and closing three times.

Does anyone know if K-1 will get any more firmware updates?

Avoid direct competition on price implies differentiation on the products, hence the universal problem of buying a camera and then noticing that other models have features that your own camera doesn't have while forgetting that your camera has features that other cameras don't have. In order to solve this problem, one would buy all camera models that have at least one feature that other models don't have.

I'm using firmware version 1.43, so far so good, it is stable. Mechanical sensor stabilization the Pentax K5 series had it but it added some noise to the sound of the video recording and it also drained battery power, so, for those two valid reasons Ricoh replaced the mechanical stabilization by software, which is just fine.

Meaning that Ricoh had a plan to boost staff and investment but revised it back to zero increase based in market trend, meaning they may not be growing in any way, but still not doing catastrophic. When I see how fast Pentax products come out of the pipe, I believe that Pentax team is very small, so small that selling a few 10 thousands unit is enough to pay the small team. I believe, when outsourcing some glass and reusing most of existing tech, you could make a camera system with a company the size of a startup of less than 100 employees. Most of the stuff in camera is reuse of of-the-shelf components, essentially assembly and software on top.

Well, in the meantime, before Pentax release a new one, you could get an old FA to play with. It wouldn't cost much. The main downside of those film era lenses is flare when you shoot against the light, but if you shoot with light in your back, image is decent, especially for the small price.

I am not aware that the unreleased Pentax lens prototypes transit through Romania before reaching Austrian in case you would plan to intercept it because I receive it.

for landscape on full frame you would stop down between f8 and f16, of course when doing wildlife the noise might scare the grizzly away but for $74, you don't take a lot of risks. I met a guy who owned a bunch of F or FA lenses and I was impressed who compact they are, and I was surprise how dense the 70-210 is packed with glass, it takes decent picture when stopped down, but the main benefit is it is cheap and can fit into a pocket! Try find that kind of lens new today..

Pentax K-1ii VS Sony A7iii (Am I switching to the dark side?)

Switching is costly. So unless it would truly make a significant difference in photographs, switching is a waste of money.
hum.. more seriously, if you switch , it has two advantages:
1- Advantage to the camera industry: it will help fund the declining camera market
2- You'll get eye AF and 4K video
3- You will feel good for a first 3 weeks, and then it will be the same as your feeling of now with Pentax: your skills will be the limitation (again...)

Next year or so, Nikon or Canon will come up with better than Sony, then you might have to switch again. So, I would recommend to start saving money now :lol::lol::lol:

For outdoor shooting , you have the Pentax F 70-210 f4-5.6 https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-F-70-210mm-F4-5.6-Zoom-Lens.html that is even cheaper, smaller and lighter than the new Tamron 70-210 f4 lens.

Except that I rented a Sony A7III system and objectively, I agree with what "The Angry Photographer" says in his review. I borrow or rent cameras to use them for real, so that I can appreciate the differences side by side. To me it seems that the merits of Sony mirrorless system is oversold (hype), while other systems are undersold.

Tamron are rolling out good stuff these days... that's a bit of an issue if Ricoh Imaging continues to drag their lens roadmap forward in the future.

I had heard so many good things about the Sony A7III that I tried it. And I came to the same conclusion as the one of that youtube review:

Every time he is focusing, the lens is already refocused. I compare the speed of my K1 with DFA28-105, and A7III with 28-70, both lenses de-focused to infinity. The K1 locked focus faster! There is so much BS about Sony superiority, it's completely fake. Fuji is , in real life shooting, so much faster.

Sony A7 and A9 series are cameras designed for internet geeks and community fanboys, but in no way Sony A7 and A9 series are make for photographers.

If Sony generates 2/3rd of my revenue, I will want to keep getting more and more Sony contracts, I'd spend a lot more time reviewing and fine tuning the reviews for Sony, as opposed to spending as little time as possible for customers that contribute little to my revenue.

That's the kind of optics that reach perfection. DPReview aren't going to test it on the K1 II, in case it would put other brands to shame.

Amateur Photographers (UK) Predicts End for Pentax

Fundamentally, Sony aren't selling more than Pentax, except that Sony make sure that the Sony cameras are promoted first and at the expense of other brands. Now in my city, Sony have clogged every shop with they promotional materials, so much that Canon Europe came to build an open air stand to still have a word and be seen in the city! In my usually camera shop, if I ask to buy any of Canon, Nikon, Fuji cameras, they systematically propose me a Sony and even if I say "no thanks, can I see the Canon 5DVI?" they say "Sorry we don't have in stock at the moment, but in the meantime you can try the Sony A7III" !!!

Well, to be honest, given the rate of obsolescence of cameras, once you got the lenses, there is no risk to buy the next Pentax camera model. Once you've got the lenses, worst case if Pentax goes bust, you are good to the next round of technology improvement with the next camera model of any brand.

Take Nikon and Canon now, according to rumors, both are going to make mirrorless systems. That means, even if you have only one K mount lens, buying a Canon and Nikon DSLR right now is more a gamble than staying with Pentax, because it is even more certain that people owning Canon or Nikon DSLR system right will see their system value going down to floor when the Canon and Nikon mirrorless will come out.

If Pentax sticks with DSLR for the next couple of years, as a Pentax user we have time to see how technology turns out and make a best choice then when the Canon and Nikon mirrorless system will be debugged. At present we don't know what the problems of the first Canon and Nikon mirrorless systems will be... and we don't know how much better the Nikon and Canon mirrorless systems will be compared to Sony. So it is definitely the wrong time to switch brands.
