Photokina, Ricoh has Confirmed

Main thing is that people are getting nervous because of lack of "APS Flagship" - retail stock is getting very very low, so there is a real desire for a reassurance that there really is something beyond the next hill.

I can usually count on a few good photos there because the young women do feed these guys - much to the disgust of administration. Supposedly, one climbed the leg of a maintenance worker while looking for food. Every Fall, students are greeted by "don't feed the squirrels" posters provided by the biology department; I were ever caught feeding them, I would instantly become visitor-not-welcome, even though my wife does work there {she retires next May}.

Until today, I had expected the news to come from Japan. For the next week, I guess it would come from Germany.

How do you know these are the last? Did a hard freeze hit already? {that is not likely to happen here for another month .... and the tomatoes growing in containers on our porch will continue to produce ones and twos until then}

Both look awfully large to me, larger than the Sigma 70-300 APO, which I take hiking with me; both look OK in blind, but I can't imagine taking either hiking.

Does Japan observe the same weekend as the western world does? {i.e., is there little sense in hoping for an announcement tomorrow?}

Thank you for your thoughts.

Of course, a folk song comes in variations, almost by definition. My family was familiar with a 'brighter' version than you apparently were, a song from The New Christy Minstrels "Land of Giants" collection, where John Henry is one of a series of folk-heroes, including Casey Jones and Johnny Appleseed, who built the US with their hands. In this sprightly version, John Henry is presented as someone who thinks of himself first as a person, with human characteristics {such as having a loving family}, and in that sense he is superior to the machine even before the contest begins.

Fortunately they're not tempting me with a version for my Super Program, but if they did, I'd never degrade it by attaching such an ugly thing to it.

I have done your test on my Linux system, and it seems to show the same results you got. With "PENTAX" as camera brand, EXIF is missing or truncated from exported result {I'm having trouble telling which}; with "Pentax" as camera brand, EXIF is fine.

Recently I visited a local college campus, and spent half an hour following a young looking squirrel.

In the third photo, he seems to be trying to figure out what I am.

The current DA* 16-50 f/2.8 ED AL (IF) is $799 at Pentax. I very strongly believe they need lenses in that price category {or lower} - I don't care what they call them - otherwise they will lose sales {and badly needed revenue} to Sigma, and they might even lose a few users permanently.

May depend on the pricing. They may need a $800 lens more than a $1600 lens - or maybe they could provide both.

Full frame Mirrorless cameras...are they going to dominate ? Who will buy?

Meanwhile, what Canon and Nikon are seeing is a net loss of upper echelon photographers - who are going to Sony ..... of course, the companies are going to explore MILC!!

They need to stop reading manuals - purchase a "for Dummies" book and then get out and take photos. The controls I change on my camera are essentially the same I changed on my rangefinder Yashica in 1969 - ISO, shutter speed, and aperture.

added: some years ago, my mother purchased a Canon SLR at a local camera store - then took lessons there on how to operate it. If these companies don't still provide that kind of service, they don't deserve to stay in business!!

The lubrication seems to be giving out, so focusing to infinity is becoming virtually impossible, but the Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 kitted with my Super Program has always been a special lens to me.

I choose smart phones mainly on the camera it contains {any of them can send and receive phone calls and text messages}. I have always found the interface awkward, but the photo produced is usually good; compact cameras are better because of the controls - my Q-7 gives me even better control of lenses. I'm not sure whether I personally would feel that a GRiii would meet the "not a lame point and shoot camera" claim in the OP ... because that is where personal opinion comes in.

One of America's legends is about John Henry, a man who manually drove the "drills" used to create holes needed to dynamite the mines and tunnels of his day. According to the John Henry story, at the end he beat a new steam machine at his job .... then his heart gave out. One of the places claiming to be the site of that great contest is in West Virginia. A few years ago, on our way to DC, our family stopped there - saw the {now abandoned} tunnel and the statue of John Henry along the highway on the ridge high above the tunnel.
