That's unfortunately why I decided to switch - that and the longer focal length lens choices. The improved AF system Pentax has been pushing out is great but I feel Pentax will always be catching up to the competitors in that area.

K-7 airshow suggestions..

I think 300mm is enough but it really does depend on the airshow, the show flight path, and your location.

Shot with the DA* 300mm f/4 :

More shots can be seen here --> flickR set. All shot with the DA* 300mm. A zoom that goes to 300mm is perfect IMO.

As deadwolfbones explained, it's a vapor cone that forms when nearing/hitting the sound of speed (700-800mph). I've been to my local Blue Angels show plenty of times but this was my second attempt at trying to capture the vapor cone. They only perform the maneuver once per show and last year I failed to get the shot (with a DS.) This year I had my K20D and with a bit of luck got the shot :)

Thanks for the votes Mike. The photos were actually in queue for about 2 weeks :)

Good stuff. I need to hit up one of the MotoGP races at Laguna Seca one of these days. But since I'm not too into motorcycles it's tough for me to spend over $100 on tickets for an hour or so of racing. :p

Thanks guys! :)

For the car race, I used a combination of both the DA* 50-135mm and DA* 300. For the airshow, strictly the DA* 300.

A lot of events this weekend for me. On Saturday I headed out to Laguna Seca for the last race of the season for the American Le Mans series. The next day I went to Fleet Week in San Francisco. The weather was overcast in the city but I'm glad they performed since on Saturday the Blue Angels canceled due to poor visibility. Anyway, here are a handful of photos from both events.

70- 200 f2.8 Sigma vs Tamron for motorsport

I'm interested in this as well, although general consensus seems to be that Sigma offers the faster AF and the Tamron has a little more optical quality. But any more opinions would be nice. I have the DA* 300 which is great, nice and quick AF. But it can be a bit long on the tracks I go to. I've been looking at the 70-200 from Sigma and Tamron, as well as the DA* 200 and 60-250.

Thanks Frank. I love my DA* 300; I have a special attachment to it since it was my first step into pro-quality lens. I never thought I'd spend so much on a lens but I'm glad I did :)

Thanks so much Pat. There were a bunch of peacocks walking around the zoo but only when we were leaving did I finally see one displaying it's beautiful feathers :)

*istDS, DS2, or DL???

My first DSLR was a DS which I purchased when it had already been out for about 1-2 years. It was at the end of it's production cycle when the K100/110's were coming out. I've used the DS for a good 2-3 years and only recently (a couple weeks ago) did I finally upgrade to the K20D. The DS is really a great all-around camera. I like the pentaprism, 11-point AF, and AA batteries (which can be a pro or con depending on how you look at it.) Ergonomics are great and it's simple to use. If you shoot RAW, you'll definitely get the most out of the camera.

Even with my new K20D, I still love using my DS and always bring it out as a second body. I'm going to keep it until it dies on me :p

Whichever camera you get your hands on, I would say stick with it, buy a couple starter consumer lenses then think about investing in high quality lenses (DA*, Limited, or some classic K-mount manual lenses) if you want to go a step further. Lenses will far outlast the camera and you'll get more enjoyment out of it IMO. That's why instead of upgrading my camera body I just kept saving and got better glass. I never thought I'd spend over a $1000 on a lens when I first started, but once you get a taste of high quality lenses, it's hard to resist :o

You can check out the link to my photoblog in my signature to view some of my galleries. 95% of the photos in there right now have been taken with the DS.

Even though I literally live across the street from the zoo, I hadn't visited in 10+ years. My brother had some free tickets so I finally went last weekend. Just a couple photos from that day.

Last one was shot through a fence.

Fixed the title for you.

I don't have the lens but I've read reports of it being a bit soft wide open. Hopefully someone who has it can put up some samples. I'm kind of interested in this lens as well. How do you find the AF? Is it pretty quick?

Thanks for the input. Do you have the 50-135? (Didn't see it listed in your sig) It just feels really slow when compared to my DA*300 which is quick and snappy. It's a toss up between the DA*60-250, DA*200, or Sigma 70-200 (although I really want to stay with the Pentax lenses).

First photo samples from DA* 60-250!

To owners of the lens, how fast is the auto-focus? Hopefully faster than the DA* 50-135? And how stable is the front when extended? With my DA* 300 I like hand-holding on the hood. Is there any noticeable wobble, etc. when held in that fashion?
