Marisa, my deepest sympathy for your loss of your father. We all mourn with you; but he will remain a part of all of us that have his books. He had such a way of writing, that made it very easy for all to soak in his knowledge and use it to take better photos. He lives on, in all of us.

Please take care!

How do you turn on your insiperation?

Since photography has always been a big part of my life; everything I look at; subconsciously, I'm "framing" it into a shot. So I'm always "shooting" objects, scenes, etc. The inspiration has never left, for me.

[quoteOriginally posted by beholder3 No. To alert a mod I first need a valid reasoning, usually based on a rule.
Therefore the new rule was proposed. ]

Parallax: Yes, it would be the same thing as we have now. If you think a post or series of posts inappropriate, report it.[/quote]

Absolutely, it's the same thing. You say to alert a mod, you need a valid reasoning, usually based on a rule. Then a new rule is proposed, so you are still contacting a Mod regarding a "rule". Parallax, above; said it best.

How would this rule be enforced? Moderators would have to go thru the threads & count those; which for volunteers with real lives, would be a much added burden.

Of course, if someone wanted to step up to become a Mod, to do the counting...........:D

When I was cutting foam for camera cases, I would freeze the foam, making cutting much easier, and the lines better.

Hijacking is when a person wants to take a thread in a completely opposite direction. Otherwise starting a topic within an already established topic For instance, a thread dedicated to a new Pentax lens, and someone posts that their Canon/Nikon, etc., lens is much better. There's leeway in hijacking, some is quite innocent; but Moderators soon learn who definitely hijack on purpose, simply to destroy a thread.

(Ever heard of VPN? The trolls might change IP address couple of times every hour. (But that's technical thing, we should focus more on the ethics.)

Trust me, there's more than the IP address that Administration uses to catch trolls that change IP addresses. For one, their manner of posting remains the same, therefore raising suspicion. There's many other ways to narrow them down, but I won't go into that.

I didn't see anywhere that voicing our concerns is not allowed. What is not allowed, is when these concerns become disrespectful, or product bashing.

Not fear, caution. I have been threatened online, a very legitimate threat! I will take all precautions possible to protect my identity. It's nothing against your suggesting the idea, at all.

I for one, would be against this. If a person wishes their real name to be used, it should be up to them.
"Anonymity" may be the bane of the internet in some eyes, however in others, it's protecting our privacy.

One other thing to mention; many comment about disrespectful, trolling, etc., posts. I wonder if those commenting on a particular post also take the time to hit the alert moderator button? Moderators cannot possibly read each & every post; and members can assist them by using this button, if they think a post needs attention.

Also; it may be, once a post is made, it is no longer the "property" of the member, rather the site.

As a Moderator on another forum, I can tell you getting banned is not easy. I'm sure it's the same here, but when someone consistently disrupts the forums, attacks others, there is a record that Moderators make. Administrators then go by that record, before issuing a "time out", and if the "time out" doesn't work, then eventually a total ban.

Now, pornographic, etc., will get an immediate ban. But, members are not aware of the work that goes on behind the scenes, with the Moderators and Administrators. No site wishes to lose members by banning them, and will go to extreme majors to try to educate that member, as to their behavior.

It's interesting also, that some feel the Moderators are over bearing; yet when a call comes up for new Moderators; those same people suddenly become invisible. A site is only as good as the management behind it; and I feel this is a premier site!

If a site removed every section that some don't like, there wouldn't be a site left. If any member finds a section not to their liking, simply skip over it. I read the rumor section, and take most of it with a grain of salt, but still enjoy reading, because there might be a glimmer of something new being discussed, that's coming.

I don't see any of this in Adam's post. Some rules, restrictions, bans are sometimes necessary when members will not respect moderator's requests. Censorship, forbiddance? I don't see anything close to that here. It never ceases to amaze me, that some members use a free site, and yet want to demand that all rules are thrown out the window. If everyone behaved when posting, then rules, restrictions, and bans would not be needed at all.

Best thing to remember; if we behave on this site, you will never see a Moderator in "work" form; so why is there such a worry about Liberty, etc.?

I disagree about the micro managing. This is simply an alert to make the site more pleasant for all to use. Going to that MS system; wonder what the cost is? Also, it would appear it takes a lot of the human factor out of the moderating. Having everything like this automated, I feel this site would lose it's "family" feeling. But that's just me.

Again, this is a private site; you and I and every member agreed to the terms when joining. "Salami" tactics do not apply, nor does "internet freedom"; rather Moderators keep the posts and threads within the terms of service. If any member is unhappy with this, they are welcome to start their own site and let free rein prevail.

People do come & fill the site with content; and 98% do it within the Terms of Service, so there's no problem. The 2% decide that rules do not apply to them, and try to disrupt the threads, by being disrespectful, and worse.

I'm glad this site is family friendly, & will stay that way.
