Astrotracer and large mm lens

Well I figure that since you are not supposed to mount or change lenses with the camera on, the only correct way to do the calibration for Astrotracer is with a lens already mounted. It simply would not calibrate with the D FA 150-450 lens mounted. I wonder if I told the camera it was a 100mm lens the system would calibrate.

As I was going through the gyrations necessary to perform the calibration, all I could think of was that the front half of the lens would fall off as has happened to a few member here.

I put my D FA 150-450 lens on my K1-II and it would not calibrate. Installed my D FA 28-105 and it calibrated right off.

No major league teams here. Just the AAA Rochester Red Wings. Their new stadium occupies a parking lot once filled with Kodak employee vehicles near Kodak Office in downtown Rochester. If you are a fan of the TV show M.A.S.H., one of the teams they play is the Toledo Mud Hens. Their old stadium almost made it as the filming location of movie "The Natural".

Tickets are pretty inexpensive. Not sure of camera regulations. Never took one there. They are one level below "The Bigs". They are currently the farm team of the Minnesota Twins. Past affiliations are the Orioles and the St. Louis Cardinals. Stan Musial played his first pro games as a Red Wing when he was 17 so some notable players have come through Rochester over the years. They have been around since 1877. Still in the same city.

Only six pro teams have been in the same city since the 19th century. The Cincinnati Reds, the St. Louis Cardinals, The Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia Phillies the Chicago Cubs and our Rochester, Red Wings. Been a few years since I went to a game.

This is the last baseball game I went to. They use 1870's rules and the games are fun to watch. A lot more action than a modern game. The hurler (pitcher) is supposed to throw the ball so that the batter can hit it. No called balls or strikes unless the pitcher cannot get it over the plate, or the batter lets too many good pitches go by.

In English speaking countries it will be called the Pentax IYFM! IYFM! stands for "In Your Face Mirrorless! "

Not sure how that works out in other languages.

That is the problem. Hurt my back in March 2019. Still recovering. Before that I was working out once or twice a day on the home gym. Spending 20 to 40 minutes a day on a stepper and taking 2 mile walks. Just trying to get back to walking some distance now. I can now mow the lawn if a take a few minutes break two thirds of the way through.

I would like to say that I hurt my back by lifting a car off a child, but all I did was stand up from the loveseat and turn to walk. Never had a great back since I hurt it as a kid, but never anything like this last injury.

For me the money is already set aside for the new model if it is as great as people seem to think it is. FF is my preferred format and the K-New would be a sports/action camera. I plan on the camera, battery pack (often included in pre-release sales) and the DA 55-300 PLM to replace my current DA 55-300mm WR

To me weight is not a factor at all. In my youth is was not an issue because being young and dumb nothing is a barrier to you. As I got older weight gradually became an issue so taking everything along on a hike got to be an issue. Luckily zoom lens performance has made vast improvements so a few zooms and I was good to go.

Now that I am old and retired, the long hikes are out of the question so I upgraded my camera bag to a Nissan Frontier pickup truck in late 2016. Now I pack just about everything along with me and make a final decision while on site. So I guess I don't care about weight anymore. Cameras, lenses, binoculars and spotting scopes in bags on the back seat. Tripods in bags on the floor in front of the rear seat. I also carry a lightweight camp stool for longer periods away from the truck. Looks pretty sharp and has been a great road trip vehicle. Gas mileage is not great, but it goes places where I would not want to take a car. Thinking of getting a smaller travel trailer with boondocking (camping off the grid) capabilities.

If one went by camera format usage by members here the thread where you post your K1/K1-II photographs is larger than almost all the other similar threads combined.

If I get the K-New I will probably upgrade from my current DA55-300 to the PLM model too for better autofocus. Battery grip too. Often included in pre-orders so why not? I would prefer a FF camera with the upgraded features, but I doubt it will be out anytime soon. Probably 2022 or later This is merely my guess based upon current rate of new camera model introductions. Being "stuck" with only the K1, K1-II and K3 at the moment is not a bad thing at all.

I have been using sneaker net since I got my first digital camera. But that is just me. If I want to get something out quick, the camera on my iPhone Xr is pretty decent. I do not Facebook or Twitter either. Just never got into it. But than again I am an old dog and that is a new trick.

I have it all figured out. This camera is going to have blazing fast autofocus with the best tracking and predictive focus system ever. I am going to be an early adopter and my life will be filled with joy. Then the first time I mount my D FA 150-450 onto the camera the front half of the lens is going to fall off.

My Panasonic FZ1000 can do this and I do not find it that desirable a feature. Besides the fact that the OVF drives my eyes crazy after awhile, I do not like the false image it gives me of the subject. I am probably just an old dog unable to learn new tricks, but that is my experience with the infernal devices.

There were quite a few shots from that trip like that. In a way I am sorry that I did not have my K1 upgraded to the K1-II configuration. It would have been interesting to see if they fixed the problem as part of the upgrade.

I have also seen it on my K3 at speeds like 1/2000 second when using my D FA 150-450 lens. Here is a link to a thread I started a three years ago.

It is not as much about capacity as it solves other problems. Some people write RAW to one and jpeg to the other. I use it as an in camera backup and write RAW to both. One member here recently posted that slot 1 died on his camera and is still going using slot 2.

I am not a fan of large capacity cards because if the card dies the amount of images lost is huge. My preferred size on my K1 is 64GB but I do have a set of 128GB cards for it too. Sometimes the price is just too good to pass up. On my K3 because of smaller file size, I use 32 GB cards pretty often too.

Tripod recommendations please

What you really need is two tripods. A beast and a smaller one. My beast is a Vanguard Auctus Plus 323CT. Why that one? Because it reviewed pretty good and was on sale at B&H for half price. On the beast resides a gimbal head which works great with long lenses. The gimbal head is permanently mounted on the beast because I hate swapping heads. It is a very stable configuration. When you mount your long lens and camera on a gimbal mount it at the center of gravity. Setup should not tilt with the tension released.

I went through a brief period of gimbal head acquisition syndrome (GHAS) some years ago. I still have a Nest and a Lensmaster RH-2. The Lensmaster is made in England by an engineer who designed his own. I like it a lot Simply made and easy to disassemble for a clean and lube if necessary. Built like a tank with a maximum static load of 45KG or 100 pounds. Cost is 187.95 GBP. (About $245 USD) Mine arrived here in the US in a week. Comes with 50mm and 140mm Arca plates too which makes the deal even better.

Link to website. Gimbal Heads LensMaster

I use a smaller tripod with either a ball head or pan and tilt for everything else. Again Vanguard because they were on sale at B&H. Scanning sites like B&H and Adorama one can find some pretty good deals. Estate sales, garage sales and flea markets may have an occasional deal too. I picked up a SLIK U212 for $20 at an estate sale and passed it on to my daughter in law who likes to dabble in photography when she had the time.

My K1 with the 28-105 lens mounted on it is like the perfect storm. Here is a shot from a few years ago at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone. The first shot is the uncropped image. The second shot is heavily cropped. You can see how bad it is on my K1. 1/100 sec at F10. Focal length was 53 mm. Interestingly enough my initial shots with the same camera in the same place a year earlier do not have the effect. It started after several hundred photos taken. I have a lot of photos form this trip with the same problem. At that time i had never heard of the issue. My K1-II seems not to suffer from the problem. Whenever possible I avoid the shutter speeds that have it and use LV with electronic shutter if I really need to use those speeds. Shake reduction is off.

The Samyang 35mm f1.4 lens arrived to day. I found it on my front porch. Delivery originally scheduled for tomorrow. Oh well I got it. Good size lens. Seems pretty sharp. Nice bokeh and nice starlight effect on highlights. The focus ring has a little wiggle in it. Will look into that more. No wiggle in my Rokinon 20mm of 100mm macro lenses. Certainly no problems with the price. Here is a crop from test photo I took.

Well, I went for the deal of the day and got the last one. Samyang 35mm f1.4 lens for $286 or so. Been wanting one of these for awhile and this is the least expensive I have ever seen them. Applying credit card rewards points made it even less expensive. Should arrive on July 29th.

Mine was orange too. Upgraded cloths seats, three on the tree too. Mine had a positraction rear end and upgraded suspension too. It was a beast in the snow. Stable on ice too with the upgraded rear end. Very comfortable car with the upgraded seats. Without power steering it was several turns of the wheel to move the front tires. It was something like 11 rotations of the steering wheel from stop to stop. The alternator died every 15 thousand miles too. The field diodes would crap out.

It was all of $2,997 brand new. The cars main claim to fame was the barrel roll in the James Bond movie "The Man With the Golden Gun.". That trick was designed on a computer at a place called Calspan. They were just down the street from where my station was and the ramps were sitting on their back lot.

A few years ago you could have purchased the car used in the movie. An homage to all the orange Hornets out there.

Pentax K-1 Mark ii user, feeling frustrated about being stuck with only the kit lens

You are lucky Norm. My K1 is pretty bad. My K1-II seems okay but I do avoid the 1/80 to 1/250 second range just in case. Looking back over my K1 images it seemed to have developed after a couple hundred images had been made.

It also appears to vary. Adding the battery grip or a different lens seems to effect it. For my K1 the combination that seems to have it the worst is when I have my D FA 28-105 lens on the camera. TAv mode is a real life saver here along with going to live view and the electronic shutter.

When it occurs, the result is that overall sharpness just seems off. When you zoom in, you can see it. It looks like the ghost images you used to see on the old style television sets.

Nikon FF cameras seem to have it too so it is not unique to Pentax by any means.
