My local cameras shop held a film scavenger hunt a few weekends ago, and I signed up, failed to really get any inspiration for the goals, and submitted a half-shot roll as the processing was already paid for, so why not.

Came in today to discover that this had won for its prompt, which was "picture within picture". It didn't turn out how I was hoping, but it got me a few rolls of free Ilford, so who am I to complain.

qft. I picked up several MZ-S's and PZ-1p's in near-mint condition for 20% of their original price while bracing for the analog camera apocalypse. I've seen a steady decline in the availability of used film cameras in pristine condition. Now I'm seeing more heavily used cameras being sold for scrap and dwindling avenues for repair (Eric)

i.e. it would be difficult to market a new film SLR for $500 while you can buy a decent used film camera for $20. But, this is just a phase. In less than ten years I expect that only toy cameras will be available for sale. I don't like toy cameras, unless they have a mount for my SLR lenses.

The mantra that "Pentax was late to the DSLR market" is just rubbish. I didn't see that sentiment when Samsung Galaxy followed the iPhone.

I also don't agree that low market demand requires the extinction of a technology. How much demand was there for film photography before the Kodak Instamatic? Sometimes a company needs to create the demand for a product which you didn't you know you needed.

And, (rant continues) I don't agree that old technology is obsolete technology e.g. film. The "Wheel" is roughly 5,520 years old and nobody is complaining that it's obsolete.

With the quality of these pictures it's not even fair to have to vote. Great work from a wide spectrum of different photographer's views.

Did you know the KP could do this?

I'd previously experimented with making Panorama images when I owned my K-r, but I'm finding that the KP, matched with the excellent Pentax FA 20-35mm f4 zoom is a killer combo for making pano images. You may find that shooting on the wide end will result in more undesired curvature in the resulting FOV, but the software I use (Hugin) does an excellent job of correcting this. I thought I'd never say this, but in good light (where you can keep your shutter speed up around 1/80 or higher) even panning in hand-held mode is quite feasible. You must ensure that exposure settings don't change between shots, you keep the horizon straight as you pan, and when you develop the individual raw images, you must apply the same profile to all the individual images. (I used Raw Therapee v5.3) Once you've stiched the pano image in hugin, open and edit in the post-processing program of your choice (I use PaintShop Pro) make your final edits, and voila!

The 24mp sensor and 5-axis image stabilzation are capable of working miracles. Did I mention the wind was blowing 10-15mph at the time I shot this?

Normally I'd have opted for a Tripod to shoot something like this, but it's nice to know with the KP, it's not always a must have.

Setup for KP + 21mm Ltd Astrophotography in Grand Canyon This Labor Day Weekend?

Thanks for the info. I cant wait to give it a shot with the KP. I did a work shop some years ago and we did a little Astro. I had some pretty good shots I thought, but nothing compared to what Im seeing. Unfortunately both of my hard drives died within a couple days locking all 30k photos up in a time capsule that has not opened as of yet.

Here is one from that workshop.

Thanks everyone for your help! I was able to go out and shoot for two nights. During the first, I didn't really get any great pictures, but I used the time to learn how to setup the camera and get the stars' exposure right. With the 21mm fully open at f/3.2, I had to raise my ISO to 6400 for decent results that I could examine on the LCD. On the second night, I finally got some rather nice pictures of the Milky Way. In fact, there were better than I ever could have imagined getting with my lack of astrophotography experience, I was so excited!!!

I ended up going with the stacking method, combining several dozens of 13 second exposures at ISO 6400 for each photograph (3 unique angles total), using Sequator, no Astrotracer. Because this was the first time I got to see and photograph the Milky Way, I decided to just photograph the sky and not worry about foreground elements and composition. These were also taken as part of a project for my photography project in school, which requires me filling up as much of the frame as possible with stars. Here are the pictures :)

I've been happily using my KP along with a K1 this summer. I've only taken snaps since I'm traveling with others, but I think a couple of them are reasonable.

For some reason I like this photo. Not quite sure why, but I like it (KP, DFA 28-105)

Denali:

I've been mostly using the KP with the DA*300 and 1.4TC, a good combination. I've even managed to get a few pictures of wild things, though not many good ones. I liked the puffins.

I have always struggled with the da21 in the flat lands of Cambridge (UK)... However, a recent trip to the Canadian Mountains reminded me just what a gem it is.

Had a nice day with my wife today. Were out on the Ammersee, a bavarian lake. Had KP, DA15, DA18-135 and DA55-300PLM with me. Every lens got its chance. Day was bright and nice. Sometimes not that easy because of extrem high contrasts. Here are some mixed detail, near and far away pictures. These are all taken with DA55-300PLM except the last one where I used the DA18-135 and KP with tilted screen.

I just got my KP Saturday Night, got to take a few test shots with the cat last night, and tonight went out to the country. I really like the way it handled, I've got a lot to learn, just a tad more advanced than my K-50.

A couple of days ago I took this photo of The Moon using my KP with pixel shift enabled, the resulting DNG file was a not inconsiderable 110MB in size. The KP was attached to an Altair Astro Lightwave 72mm ED-R refractor telescope mounted on an Skywatcher EQ5 Synscan mount, the manual exposure was 1/125sec at ISO100, 0EV. This was my first attempt at using my KP's pixel shift through a telescope, it seems to have worked. :)
