I've found two problems with using many of the older vintage lenses: 1) C.A. and 2) low contrast. Both problems are usually correctable in post without significant ill effects.

Landscape Wide angle: need advice/tips

I'm definitely NOT a wide angle guy. The distortion of wide angle lenses makes me dizzy. To me, wide angle lens distortion looks much like a fun house mirror at the carnival.

The widest lens I will use is a 35mm lens on a full frame Pentax K-1. I have not found any lens wider than that that has zero distortion.

If I want to capture more of the scene, I'll stitch multiple, distortion-free images I take with my 35mm or 50mm lenses.

I would imagine that most readers here already have a very competent digital camera and a stable of lenses they love. So, what should they do now? Here's what I'm doing now -

1. Master the use of flash.
2. Master the art and science of making prints
3. Purchase and learn to use the lastest image editing software (especially RAW image editors, and A.I. capable softwares)
4. Develop a photographic specialty (e.g. for 3 years now I've only shot fast prime lenses wide open for optimum quantity and quality of bokeh)

If you don't know already, you might want to learn how to maintain/CLA/repair your own lenses.

3 Exceptional Used Pentax K-1 Cameras On Sale For Under $1,200

Yesterday I received an "Alert" from "Lens Authority" (in my opinion the best seller of used photo gear in the USA) that they have 3 used K-1 cameras with "exceptional performance" for sale for under $1200. These were all on sale last week, so I would not be surprised if a serious buyer might just be able to talk them down to their "Black Friday" price for an immediate sale.

In case you've never heard of Lens Authority, they are the same organization as these guys.

If portraits are your thing, you should definitely go with a full frame sensor camera.

The only "stills" shortcoming of the K-1 is a lack of blazing auto-focus speed, especially for tracking moving subjects. However, portrait subjects don't move much, so for the budget conscious photographer like you, I can think of no better full frame than the K-1. If you are patient, you can buy a minty used K-1 here for around $1,000 (I did - twice).

ChristianRock suggested the Nikon D610. I've got it. While indeed a nice camera, the Pentax K-1 has better features, ergonomics, and ruggedness. Also, the K-1 has a tilty LCD screen and IBIS, neither of which I could do without.

Good advice! Or do like I did - buy a minty used Nikon full frame D600 (with new shutter mech in it to solve oil on sensor problem) for $400 and then use this F mount lens on a Nikon body as it's designed to do. While the Pentax K-1 is a MUCH Better body than the D600, having a Nikon body enables one to try out many inexpensive F mount lenses. Then, if you absolutely love how they perform on the D600, you can then adapt it to the Pentax K-1, knowing that it will be an even better performer on the Pentax body.

I don't believe Pentax intends to "target" Leica and Zeiss lenses. No Leica or Zeiss lenses are currently made in the K mount, so why "target" lenses that are not even an option for Pentaxians to use on their Pentax cameras?

I own no Fuji lenses that are stabilized.

I believe that my Fuji X-T2 shots were taken with an adapted 90mm f/2.5 Leica lens (Walter Mandler design). This lens of course has no IS.

If you don't already own this lens, you can readily purchase a new Helios 85mm 1.5 on Ebay for $300 that already comes in the M42 mount.

If you already own this lens in the Nikon mount, it probably would be easier (and cheaper) just to sell it and then purchase the same lens in M42 mount.

But if you're like me and you like a challenge and enjoy Frankensteining a lens, go for it - give it a try. It's not like it's an expensive lens. While you might destroy the lens in the process (I typically destroy at least one lens each month with my mad experiments), you will likely learn much about experimental lens adapting that will likely serve you well on future adapting challenges. Besides, if you end up destroying and parting out the lens you will likely find good uses for the parts in the future (provided you keep on adapting lenses). A large parts inventory from parted out lenses is very valuable to those who like to tinker with lenses.

In the last few weeks I've adapted 3 old Leica projector lenses to Pentax K mount, Nikon F mount and Fuji X mount. These projector lenses are a Walter Mandler design. The projector lenses cost me about $75 USD each. They have the exact same optics as a Leica R lens that costs around $400. However, each of these lenses required a couple of parts from my "lens parts bin" to complete the conversion. You just never know when old lens parts will come in handy.

Not easily doable. Likely challenging to do even by someone who has lots of knowledge and experience adapting lenses..

I love to take photos for our local charities. Last week was the annual "Festival of Trees" Christmas tree exhibit. Here they sell fully decorated Christmas trees with the proceeds going to support local hospice houses.

I was asked by the director to again take photos of the event. Wednesday I attended with my Fuji X-T2. I took lots of photos that I thought were pretty nice. However, the venue was dimly lit (to showcase the Christmas tree lights) and when I got home and looked at my many photos on my 27" monitor I noticed that all of the images were slightly blurred! I could not use a tripod or mono-pod for this shoot, and most of the photos were taken at around 1/15th - 1/60th of a second (note that the Fuji X-T2 does NOT have IBIS).

I went back the next day with my K-1 camera and a similar lens and re-shot these images with the K-1's IBIS turned "on". When I examined these photos back home I found that they were all critically sharp.

While I don't need IBIS all of the time, when it comes to those occasions when shooting in dim light, the K-1's IBIS can mean the difference between getting the shot or not.

I doubt that I will ever buy another camera without IBIS. None-the-less, I think that I'll be keeping the Fuji X-T2 to use strictly for making 4K videos. But I'm sticking with the Pentax K-1 for my stills work.

I have an antivirus software on my computer called "Avast Online Security". It auto blocks "website trackers" that collect information on you.

Avast reports that Pentax Forums has 4 trackers (see below).

Facebook has 3 trackers.

To put this all in perspective... The absolute WORST tracker of those sites that I regularly visit on the Internet has 18 trackers (surprise surprise, it's DPreview)!

Personally, I don't care how many "trackers" a website has because my Avast Online Security blocks all of them. Nobody gets my personal information without my knowing it.

Last night I tried to install Luminar 4 on a 10-year old Dell laptop that runs Windows 7. While it installed just fine, when I tried to use it I got an error message about having an inadequate graphics card. I guess that I was not too surprised because this is an old laptop and it was never configured to do image editing. So, I deleted it from the laptop.

I the future I'll only be using Luminar 4 on my modern desktop computer.

Any zooms with pixie dust magic?

I did some informal comparisons between the 20-40 and the Pentax 31mm lens a couple of years ago (with the zoom at 31mm of course). I felt that this zoom was "very close" in overall IQ to the prime. However, if you're a pixel peeper you might find the prime to be a tiny bit better.
