KEH - "Buy More, Save More" - Cyber Monday Only

KEH has been very un-attractive with their
1. Pricing on the used items.
2. Discounts they offer on sale events
3. Sales tax on the items (this pretty much kills it for me)
4. Equipment Ratings for the price.

EVFs and Eye Strain

This is true 100%. Eyestrain from an incident light (usually from the LED) are much harsh than a passive light into an OVF. I have had several image retention issues with EVFs and hate to use them. I know I am getting old but this will sooner or later cause trouble.

Back up is one thought.
I always have had pairs with 16-50 n 50-135 on my k-5iis
and 24-70 and 70-200 on k-1s mounted and ready to fire.
Second body is the way to go if it does not burn a hole. And an exact same or close is also highly recommend.. that means a k-3 is not a backup for k-1ii. A k-1 or a k-1ii is. So go for it.

The sensor is floating when the camera is powered up. Think magnetic levitation... When there is no battery or no power to the camera there is no levitation of the sensor that happens when SR kicks in and hence the sensor infrastructure is loosely laying in the body. Don't believe this is an issue. All IBIS cameras more or less exhibit this behavior.
There is a way to Turn the SR off and turn it back on. Try taking pictures in both modes.

To achieve an f2.8 or better on this wide an angled lens the size of the front element and the contributing elements won't remain the same and it will loose its charm as an almost pancake lens..

Printing photos or documents?

Canon Pro 100 is the best value for money when it goes on sale with a rebate if you need a photo printer. IF you need one for document printings.. there are a few that show up under $50 with started cartridges that last about a few hundred pages if not 1 thousand.

This... exactly this...

and then I start wondering what people are doing with so many focus points in their cameras when you really need one that does it fast and accurate. I am almost always using the Center Point or the one at the 3rd 99% of the times. yeah never Auto and never let the camera decide what to get in focus.

What am I missing? How do people really put to use 100 focus points to get good pictures when most of the times just one good cross type is enough. What am I doing wrong here? I find it way easier to get something in focus using center point and recompose than anything else.....
Really curious to know how having a zillion focus points is better than a handful of meaningful cross types. I really need to unlearn the technique that I am currently using cos they may be obsolete.

FGZ-540 and K1 strange issue

usually the contacts. I have my camera contacts get a layer of something at times... (something like it was kept in a humid situation for some time, although not). I have to deliberately clean each contact on the hot shoe (on the camera) to make it clean/shiny. This happens more on my K-01 often and sometimes on my K-5ii.
Flash wont be at the end of it with that behavior.. if the capacitor inside (which is the component that usually fails if not the bulb) is dying then it will just stop working or will recycle more often than it used to.

Exactly all of the above and ...

- Major video leap is my additional guess. But feel 50-50 about it because Pentax has not made this a priority for a long time.
- Some or a lot of GRIII features ported.

Best LTD Prime Lens To Stitch
Posted By shardulm

Honestly a few considerations are missed in the lens recommendations here albeit all of them are still valid and usable. Even a cell phone camera does stitch a pano. So I will provide my 2 cents here.
If you are planning to stitch why complain about the number of shots (4 vs 16.). The reason I say this is to go telephoto (A DA70 or a even a DA 135) and take more shots to do the landscape (16 vs 4). Tele photos will give you a more square/flatter image than a wider angle would. Also each frame will have more detail since you get closer to the subject matter. Of course you need more frames but then your stitching any way.

My 35 macro recommendation would be for subjects that could use macro capabilities for the sake of resolution. (Think a beer bottle picture stitched vertically with landscape frames).

In my opinion the no of frames should not be a limiting or a deciding factor as in you should not use a wide angle because you could do the stitch with less frames. Wide angle has its own set of inherent issues which do not work in stitching at times (The corners look stretched out and when stitched it does not look very natural).

A 35 for a table top subject for high resolution and a 70 or 100 of a 50-135 for landscape stitch would help capture much more resolution per frame.

New FF body or new lens - which will make more of a difference in image quality?

The star optics is a step up for sure and add to that the Pentaxs rendering... Makes it superb.

Tabling the FF wider FOV advantage, a K-5iis with D-FA* 70-200 will give you a cleaner image than a K-1 with Tamron would pixel for pixel.
If you don't need 36mpix and all the bells and whistles that k-1 brings with it then you may be better of getting into the star optics game at this time.

Upgrade Question - Upcoming ASP-C Flagship or K1 Mk ii ?
Posted By shardulm

I still use it for my product photography despite owning K-1... and here is why
1. Most online website where the images are published are not likely taking 36mpix images. Not even 16mpix.
2. K-5iis with a 50mm macro and strobes is just as clean and gives me smaller files.

The only consideration I have to upgrade from K-5iis to the next up if at all is the one that has Pixel Shift. But I use K-1 in those scenarios if I must.

$20 is worth a shot. You may be able to sell it for parts for more even if it is a dud on that front. If it really not focus ring issue then you just have won a lottery.

SDM lens failures

This is a great lens by all means and is Screw Driver convertible. Besides.. the SDM failures albiet true can come back to life once heavily used. I have about 3 DA*s that show the wake up issue. Once up they work very well. It seems the tolerances with these SDM motors was so tight that any over torqued assembly of these motors on the lens ended up having trouble with failure like symptoms (atleast that is my observation).
I have seen comments on the forum around the motor mount screw being too stiff and once wriggled gives motor a chance to rotate bringing back that seemingly dead SDM to life. I have not tried that myself.. but the more I use the SDM the more it seems to be freeing up. I have one 50-135 that came back to life when I used that on my K-01 that refused to wake up. I made it focus on a wall that did not have much contrast in it making the focus motor run end to end seeking focus. It did heat up quiet a bit when I did that (out of frustration..) but it came back to life again. I was almost going to burn it out but the battery depleted just in time so I guess it survived the abuse.
These motors also show some temperature sensitivity (as in very hard to get them out of slumber in winter vs in summer). Once woken up they behave normally. The screw drive conversion of course bypasses this SDM and brings back the lens to life with no problems whatsoever (except the noisy gear drive).

Do we need a separate category named "I don't know what I am doing but somehow its K-1s fault..." for these kind of posts? There is atleast one that I usually see floating on the front page that can belong to this category. Reading those posts It almost sounds like Pentax is a start up company and came out with their first full frame DSLR product not know what they must be doing.

No offense to the OP but a thought in general.

May be Pentax should not lower the price of K-1 so much so that it becomes accessible to people who never have had a SLR/DSLR before needless to say with no prior experience to any SLRs operations/function.
