Third party lenses, am I missing out

It is top of my 3rd party list, especially as it is a reasonable price. Real estate photography eh? My other game, when I am not hunting lenses, is looking at houses in Spain. I will never be able to afford one but there is no harm in dreaming. It all stemmed from watching "a place in the sun". What I want to know is why are so many houses presented so badly? The photos are the worst, quite often the houses look a mess, the images are taken from strange angles and often don't give you a clue as to the size, shape or layout. Do Spanish estate agents just pluck someone off the street? If you decide to start an agency to show them how it should be done, can I come and work for you, please :)

Indeed.

In all the excitement of new models, we often forget just how good the previous generation cameras (even the generation before that) are. Although - like any camera - it has limitations, I've never once felt my K-3 to be lacking, and - as the video points out - whilst increased image quality and dynamic range is always welcome, how much do we really need? I shoot my Samsung GX-10 a lot and love the images I get from it (my limited skills notwithstanding), but it's far more limited in dynamic range and resolution than the K-3 which - by all accounts - is a real powerhouse of a camera. There's little it can't do well.

I've no doubt those buying the K-3III will be delighted with it, and amazed by the image quality - and I hope to be among those joining them eventually. Until then, none of us needs to feel poorly catered for with a K-3 or K-3II...

I've made my thoughts about the K-3III pretty clear in recent months. Of course, I want one (I really do)... but I don't need one, and until the price for a new one comes down or it becomes available in the secondary market at a price I'm comfortable with, I'll be sticking with my K-3 and K-3II, which - along with my older and much-loved bodies - suit me fine.

Anyhooo...

This evening I was looking on YouTube for examples of K-3 video, as I'd like to try out a little casual video work next year (purely as a learning exercise) and I know it's not well thought of in this area due to low bit rate and lack of mechanical image stabilisation. I simply searched for "pentax k-3 video", and the third result that popped up was titled "The Pentax K-3 III is Upon Us, Time To Grab The Original? - Pentax K-3, My Favorite Camera in 2020" by a YouTuber called "snappiness". It's not actually about video, but rather - as you can tell from the title - the K-3.

This is a young man with some serious talent who uses the K-3 for both stills photography (mainly landscape, nature and astro, it seems) and video, despite acknowledging its limitations with the latter. He's very level-headed and unemotional in his presentation, and has some excellent things to say about the K-3 while displaying some wonderful photos he's taken with this camera (his post-processing skills are clearly excellent too). The video lasts less than eight minutes, and - for me - it's one of the best Pentax-related videos I've watched in years.

Oh, I forgot to mention - he also shoots a K-1 :D

I have no affiliation with this lad... in fact, I'd never heard of him before tonight. I hope he's a member here. Either way, I encourage you good folks to watch his video to the end, without skipping. I think you'll like it. If not, you've only lost eight minutes ;)

Machinery Photoshop CC Sky Replacement

The only time that I would absolutely disagree with it is when a canned sky image is used that the photographer did not create.

I am for having space aliens landing in the background, though.

Thanks, and yeah, I see that kind of stuff too.

Thank you!

I liked this shot fine with the original deep blue sky! But I decided to play with it when I realized that you can put in your own sky image instead of someone else's, like can be done with a mere click in the PS app.

Thanks!

Thank you!

I was checking out the latest updates to Photoshop CC and noticed "Sky Replacement". Having never tried the Luminar product, I can't compare the two, but this first stab at it turned out great! this is a recent balloon photo that I shot on November 21, with the blank blue sky replaced by a photo of a Circumhorizontal Arc that I shot back in 2017. I generally have sort of frowned upon sky replacements in general, but now I can see that purely for art's sake, maybe it's OK sometimes

I have bought Amateur Photography a few times over the years. Surprised it is still publishing....as in I'm surprised that any magazine is still publishing in print. Sad to say, as I liked print media.

No wonder. A great body with advanced functionality. The high ISO performance is a highlight not mention like in the rest suggestions in the article, but the inclusion in the list is good news.

Yes very easily. In fact many web services strip the exif before sending it to the users browser. Anyone downloading your image can also strip exif by simply opening it and re-saving it without exif data. This can also be automated or scripted.

RobSpain - Interesting idea! but you would expect greater use to cause magnetization as each time the coil is activated the solenoid material would become more magnetized. And if it did get magnetized over greater usage, that points to an error in material selection as the iron composition of solenoids was not selected properly - that is a field all on it's own! So who knows but it points to someone somewhere making a saving of a few cents to push profits instead of quality - never a good idea!

Yes, that sounds like what we are going to do. He is waiting for any Black Friday deals, but has his mind made up about the K70. I, too think it will be a great camera for him to learn and grow with. Thanks for your response!!

I too would recommend the Sigma 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO HSM C. This is a great, affordable, all around lens that will cover a good portion of needs such as landscape and wildlife shots. I use this with my K-70 as my general walk-around lens. Even though I own both the SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR and the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE, I find myself using the Sigma 18-300mm more. It works great with the K-70. Once your father-in-law has the camera for a while and and gets a feel for it, then it might be time to look at more expensive options for ultra telephoto or ultra wide.

Ordinarily I'd steer folks away from so-called "super-zoom" lenses, but I also own the Sigma 18-300 and I'd agree it's rather good. At the same focal lengths as the HD DA55-300 (screw-drive version), it's generally not quite as sharp in the centre but actually better in the borders. At the wide end, the centre is excellent but it needs stopping down for decent border performance. Vignetting, distortion at the wider end, leisurely AF and lack of WR are the compromises, but they don't detract from this being a very decent lens of its type.
