Hi all. Last Monday was the 21st anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from the UK to China. It was a rainy weekend but there were some celebratory activities at Victoria Park, including demonstrations of dragon costumes and the people that perform in them. There was a group of boys practicing without costumes and it was entertaining to watch for a while. The dragon was a static display. It's a two-person costume, which is why the boys were practicing in pairs. All taken with my K-5 and 70mm Ltd.

Hi all. A great week for POTW! I have a soft spot for wood storks. Fantastic dandelion, great tulips, two of the prettiest airplanes in service today and great band photos (the K-1 is still a couple of years out for me, but wow...).

I went to Yangshuo China last weekend. Stunning scenery but it was HOT. All of these were shot with my K-5 and 15mm ltd (which is odd, since most of the weekend I had my 16-85 on the camera...). The pano was stitched using Microsoft Image Composite Editor. A first for me but Photoshop Elements would not blend the photos. I'm quite impressed with the Microsoft product!

Ok, out of the 1500 photos I took during my week in Bhutan I suppose there a few more I'm willing to share!

1. A fire started on the hill in Punakha shortly after our arrival and it burned for a couple of days.
2. While walking back from a temple we encountered a group of school girls on their way home. They were adorable.
3. There was a dog sacked out on a pedestal near this prayer wheel and when I went to snap a shot the kid stepped in and posed. A better picture!
4. Punakha Dzong (fortress) is widely regarded as the most beautiful in Bhutan.
5. No trip to Bhutan is complete without a hike up to Tiger's Nest!

I spent the first week of April in Bhutan. Very unique place and lots of great photo opportunities. Buddhist influence is everywhere. Nice people, good food, great scenery.

Hi all! And Kung Hei Fat Choi! It's the end of the Chinese New Year's long weekend here in Hong Kong. We went to a parade on Friday night and for a hike yesterday on Peng Chau. The first three photos are on Peng Chau - incense at a temple, morning glory in a junk heap and a strange "beware of dog" sign (I don't understand the significance of the apple). The last two are from the parade.

All K-5. 1 & 2 with FA 100mm F2.8WR, 3 with DA 16-85mm and 4 &5 with DA 70mm.

DA 15mm polarizing filter

My two-cents' worth: That lens takes amazing photos in all kinds of sunlight without seeming to suffer much from the effects of polarized light; it's one of the wonderful things about that lens. So in addition to the significant limitations of using a CPL on a lens that wide, it's really superfluous in this case.

Nice critters and winter scenes!

I went to the 10,000 Buddhas temple in Sha Tin, New Territories yesterday. Lots of almost-life-size Buddhas on the way up and hundreds, if not thousands, of little ones inside the temple. Monkeys on the grounds that are rumored to steal your stuff if you're not careful...

All taken with my K-5. The temple with a smc DA-15, monkey with smc DA-70 and the Buddhas with HD DA 16-85.

I don't think I have EVER used the Auto tone function without immediately undoing. Odd how such a basic function was so useless for so long.

My relatively long-standing LR loyalty was seriously dented by my recent upgrade (5 to 6) experience. Pretty heavily invested at this point though...

Aargh! Lens ID in Lightroom 5

Well, I finally resolved this issue.

First of all I updated LR 6 to 6.13, and now new photos (taken with that lens) import with correct lens ID and things like Smart Collections work.

For all the photos I'd taken previously with that lens I created a Smart Collection to gather photos where Lens metadata is blank. Then, in Library grid mode, select the photos, choose Metadata / Save Metadata to File and then Metadata / Read Metadata from File. And voila, mystery solved.

Steve - I downloaded ExifTool and found it somewhat daunting but was able to read metadata from some files and confirm that the files contained all the correct data (both Lens Type and Lens ID fields were correctly populated).

Hi guys. Some nice shots there. I particularly like the cars on the pier and the last two pigeon shots (and yes, I'm pretty sure he saw you...).

I went for a stroll around Hong Kong today with my two favorite lenses (my DA 70 f2.4 Ltd and my DA*300 Ltd). The first two here were with the 300 and the last with my 70.

I'm pretty sure Kerrowdown could come up with a clever title for #1. The girls were representing Blue Girl Beer at the Hong Kong E-Prix (electric car races) and were getting spritzed with something...

I wouldn't (intentionally) eat any fish caught in Victoria Harbor, but fishing over the rail is pretty popular.

I'm pretty sure the restaurant workers taking a break were checking out the latest POTW on pentaxforums.com!

I replaced my 18-55 WR with a Pentax 16-85 a few months ago and wish I'd done it years ago. Very nice lens and a lot cheaper and lighter than the 24-70 full frame... it's worth a look.

Well, I'm facing this now too. After a couple of very rainy hikes (maybe coincidence, of course...) my switch is very difficult to move. Requires thumb and two fingers to grab and twist. I tried exercising many times and then tried to work a little WD40 into the switch but no joy. Removed the cover of the camera and nothing obvious (and no signs of moisture). Couldn't figure out how to completely disassemble and remove the switch and I don't have any lithium grease so I gave up and reassembled. If I can buy a new switch assy it might become obvious how to diassemble (I didn't have an easy way to remove the d-clip on the trigger button and removing the switch wiper didn't help)... Guess I'll just leave the switch on for now.

Slow week for POTW!

My wife and I went for a very rainy hike last weekend on Lantau Island. This photo shows part of a bridge/tunnel project being built to connect Hong Kong with Macau and Zhuhai. What isn't visible at the left edge of this photo is the man-made island where the bridge segment ends and a tunnel begins to pass below a shipping channel. The tunnel pops back up on another man-made island and another bridge segment continues on to Macau. The project has been delayed a few times and may open sometime in 2018.

Wow indeed. Great week for POTW!

I spent last weekend in Seoul. LIved there from 2008 to 2012 but hadn't been back until this trip. I still love it. We had fabulous weather and did some touristy things like visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace where, if you rent period costume, you get a discount on admission. It makes for great atmosphere and photos, though the "dabbing" probably isn't historically accurate (clearly not everyone, myself included, "gets" dabbing). The van bears a sign demanding the immediate release of impeached President Park Geun-Hye.

I only brought my K-5 and my DA 16-85 F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR lens with me.

Lightroom Upgrade Caution

I upgraded recently from LR5 to LR6.

Last weekend I inadvertently opened LR5 (due to a quick-launch shortcut that I have since corrected) and spent a couple of hours poking through photos, editing them and moving them to other folders. A few days later I opened LR6 and found a bunch of "The file could not be found" messages on photos. Clearly a disconnect between LR5 and LR6, and also clearly my fault, but I'm a bit annoyed that the upgrade process didn't either uninstall or deactivate the older version of LR. I can't recall all the moves I made, so I can't go into LR5, move the photos back where they were and then go back to LR6. I'm resigned to having lost a few hours of my extremely valueless time.

I looked at Control Panel / Programs and Features and found that I currently have three versions of LR installed on my computer. Generally I'm a fan of being able to make my own decisions on things like this so I shouldn't be annoyed except that I lost some work.

So if you're not already aware, note that the LR upgrade process does not uninstall or over-write the previous version and if you have any shortcuts to the program you could get into some trouble...

In any event, my opinion is that upgrading to LR6 from LR5 was not worth my time or money. It still doesn't recognize my DA 16-85 lens (sadly, this is largely why I upgraded) and doesn't really have anything new (native HDR is useful though).

A few months ago I bought an HD PENTAX-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR lens.

I am currently using Lightroom 5.

All of my other Pentax lenses (I have 8 other Pentax lenses including an 18-35 kit lens, 15, 35 and 70 Limiteds, F 50 1.4, D FA 100mm macro and DA*300) are identified in Lightroom's "Loupe" information (top left corner of photos in either Library or Develop modules--it shows focal length and, in parentheses, the lens ID). For some reason LR5 does not identify my DA 16-85mm lens (it shows focal length but not lens ID). I have checked EXIF readers (including the shutter count reader on this site) and I have confirmed that the lens information is contained in the EXIF data. Also, the Lens Corrections module in LR does correctly identify my lens and applies corrections.

This is a low-level annoyance more than anything else. I like to do silly things like create Smart Collections for each lens and I can't do that with the 16-85 because LR doesn't recognize it.

I've trolled the web a number of times looking for clues but no joy.

Has anyone else experienced this and been able to resolve it?

Hi all,

I'm cheating a bit as these photos were taken 28 and 29 July, but I just got home from vacation and didn't have a chance to post in last week's POTW...

These were all taken in Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state.

#1 is a waterfall in the Ohanapecosh area of the park, #2 is western anemone and #3 is a young hoary marmot with mom. All taken with my K-5 and DA 16-85 (#1) and DA*300 (2 and 3). I'm not sure the CP filter did me any favors on #1, but I was at 16mm...

Hi. Not too many contributions this week but the quality is high! I particularly like the zebra, the River Neath and the fawn.

Yesterday I hiked up to Victoria Peak here in Hong Kong. It was hot, sticky and at times rainy (so the River Neath photo looks particularly inviting!). I had my K-5 and 16-85 lens and bumped into a guy carrying a K-1 and a 16-85. Pretty rare Pentax sighting (should have taken a photo of him!).

Item Description
This 18-55 WR lens is in very good condition. Clean glass on both ends and never any operational issues. The lens hood doesn't snap into place very well anymore and is prone to falling off. I am also including an aluminum threaded hood, which is much more robust.

I bought the lens second-hand from a Pentax Forums user and it has served me well. Replaced it with a 16-85 earlier this year.
