Landscape The natural beauty of an air force practice range

Thanks! Unfortunately you are right. But the local rangers don't have a real problem with it because it also provides for some extra protection of the area.

I did! The only thing that is prohibited is taking spend munition with you. And for my own safety and others I have absolutely no problem with that!

You are welcome Nate and thanks!

It does and it shouldn't. It is sad, but there is rather a lot of space between dream and reality.

You are most welcome. Thanks! I have some more to share later on.

Peter, thank you!

Landscape The natural beauty of an air force practice range

The Dutch air force with planes from other NATO partners use the west side of the island of Vlieland for practice. Sometimes with live munition. Not everybody is happy with that because the whole area is also part of the most important and most valued nature reserve in the Netherlands. The public is only allowed on the range in the weekends. But apart from organized tours and the weaponry used it mostly is a quiet place. And it is rather big with large areas that are flooded with hight tide. I concentrated mostly on the landscape and not so much on the military stuff.

Cheers,

Remco

2. Old wood.

3. The reach of the high tide is clearly visible here.

4. Near the salt marshes on the Waddensea side.

5. The island of Texel with a tank as a bombing target.

Admit Your Worst Camera Abuse - Stories and Pics

I try to be careful with my equipment but I can be somewhat of a klutz... My first camera was a cheap point and shoot Fujica that was hanging on my hip belt whilst hiking. Somehow I managed to sit on it. After that the shutter button didn't work any more. I gave it a slap and it sort of self repaired! Years ago I was trying to photograph the Northern Lights with my K-5 and the DA*16-50 on a slippery road. After a gust of wind my tripod fell down. The lens was almost in two pieces. After the repair, payed for by my insurance, it worked for another year and then the zoom mechanism got stuck and it developed optical flaws. I could not honestly sell it so I still have it and bought a new DA*16-50. About two years ago I was shooting video on the flats of the Waddensea on low tide. I walked away from the camera (K-3) and lens on my tripod when I heard a dull sound behind me. Although the height was minimal the tripod had tilted over and the lens with expensive ND-filter was buried somewhat in the mud. The lens and filter didn't survive that; the salt water did its ugly work... So I bought a new DA*16-50 with the insurance money. A year later I was using the same set with the new lens again for video shooting a payed gig in a small boat. Just when I stepped to the side to moor the boat the guy in the front of the boat uttered a single "oh" and I watched the whole set go overboard.

I dived behind it...with two iPhones in my pocket! One survived. I just managed to get a grip on the one tripod leg and was able to get everything back in the boat. Only my Røde microphone and the battery grip of my K-3 survived. The camera was running when this happened. It starts at 1.56:

.

When they tried to repair the camera (the insurance company insisted on it) they found a surprising amount of sand in it. Although not that surprising when one looks at this video: Vogelvrij op Vlieland gemist? Start met kijken op NPO Start at about 16.17 minutes. So I bought a second hand k-3 and a new DA*16-50... I don't think the insurance company is very happy with me as their client.

Inside the camera they found

Ha, I did not see that! But now that you mention it.:) Thanks Bertrand!

Thanks! The clouds weren't moving very fast thought. It was more a question of finding a good pool on these muddy flats to get this photo.

Yes, the intact cabins further up the path were far more popular.:)

Thanks! The nearest paved road is about 20 kilometers away and that stove looks rather heavy... I think that might explain it.;)

When I was a boy having on your yearly holiday with the family in Western Norway we got to meet a guy from Canada traveling by bicycle. Really nice guy and he told us there were many similarities between Canada and Norway. He was mainly talking about the landscape but now I know it does not stop there. Thanks! And when I started hiking in northern Norway I used maps from the early '70s. One day I just experienced a dangerous river crossing in foul weather. I was wet, cold, hungry and to be honest also somewhat rattled by something that felt like a near death experience. Luckily I noticed a cabin nearby on the map near a small lake. A solution was at hand! But it was not to be. After searching for al long time I discovered a door leading into a dug out space in a small hill; but it had caved in and was beyond any use. I learned the same lesson you learned.

Excellent air condition too!:D

Mike, thanks! When reviewing the fifteen photo's a made this one stood out for me.

Thank you Jennifer! I hope somebody does. I already have to much printed photo's hanging. Very occasionally I manage to sell a photo. There is some stiff competition!

Thanks!

Mike, I guess I understated the photo a little bit with that title but I am glad you looked closer anyway. Thanks for the wonderful compliment!

Thanks for fine choice of words my friend. I had to look up 'whimsical' and that is a very good way to describe what I want to achieve.

Thank you John! After I stopped shooting I stayed for a while to enjoy that fine evening on those flats.

Robin, thank you! The whole time I was looking for a way to make this sunset 'work' for me. When I focussed on this cloud everything came together.

And thank you for your nice comment Urs!

Cheers,

Remco

Yep!:) Just like any photographer I am at the mercy of the weather gods and normally I really have to put in the time to consistently get pictures of a satisfying quality. This evening was somewhat outside that norm though.;)

Thanks Todd! The colors were getting progressively more beautiful after sunset and that proces lasted longer than I anticipated.

Thanks! This coastline is my main subject for photography and I am lucky enough to spend a lot of time on and near this sea working as a journalist specialized in nature.

Thanks Ray! Those posts are all that remains of efforts to retain some of the mud flowing in. Al that to expand the land and keep the sea at bay.

Thanks!

Thanks Mikey! The sunset was really jaw dropping beautiful in the first three photo's. We were standing in the sea with the tide going out surrounded by al sorts of birds. It was a genuine special moment.

Thanks Dave!

Thanks! It is normal that as the sun sets the colors get more beautiful but this time it never seemed to stop.

Wow! Thanks for a very nice compliment. The Waddensea was chosen as the most beautiful nature reserve by the Dutch public. And they are right. The Lonely Planet crowds are slowly finding their way to this region too. If you ever want to travel north to experience it for your self shoot me a personal message and I'll do my best to help you explore it. I've organized two local Pentax meets on this coast already!

Thanks Bernard! Landscape photography is a joy in a environment like this.

We had fun though! When a journalist takes your picture whilst on your way enforcing the law people mostly put on their serious face. Off camera it is a different story.

:) What I had in mind was Miami Vice. With a 175 hps outboard motor we travelled at speed over the water.

Thanks Todd! Normally I don't mind a bit of cold weather but I just experienced flying with breakneck speed up front on a fast boat (175 hps Yamaha) over lakes and canals and I was not exactly prepared for that. Your picture was a sight for sore eyes!:D

After shooting a Sony PMW100 video camera for work on this job I squeezed some shots of with the FA43. I joined these gentlemen for their patrol on the waterway's for a news piece. If anybody is interested you can find it here: Ruim honderd controles tijdens actiedag; meerdere bekeuringen | Omrop Fryslân

The wifi on my K-1 makes it easy to transfer a picture fast enough so we can use it on the website of the broadcasting station I work for.

Cheers,

Remco
