Oh my goodness. I had to go with the impossible exposure of possibly the lowest species depicted, a species I have still never gotten a one star picture of. I don't even have a single picture of the species in my collection. Very well done to all these incredible photos.

DA* 400mm F4 coming!

The Canon 400/5.6 was $1229 the last time I looked so I just figured Pentax could bring it in the same ballpark. I would still consider it at $2000 but I don't think it should cost that much. This would be a slower prime than the more complicated 60-250 zoom.

http://www.adorama.com/CA40056AFU.html

After thinking about it I'm not sure whether I'd buy a Pentax at $2000 or get the Canon at $1229 and using the extra $700 to put toward a used 40D.
The point is if I had the money right now that's exactly what I'd do, buy a Canon and shoot dual systems and this is where Pentax is missing the boat in the long run. They need longer glass, not for the guys who don't need longer glass, but for the guys who do.

DA* 400mm F4 coming!

It would definitely make me think long and hard. But do I need a 300mm AND a 400mm that costs $5000? I think snostorm makes a good point, if Pentax came out with a DA* 400/5.6 in the $1300 range and it was tack sharp at f5.6 I would be all over it. I don't know if I will ever be able to afford a 500/4 lens but if Pentax came out with one I it would lock me into Pentax for the duration, meaning i would for sure stay with their bodies into the future. I bet there are many like me also. With no big guy to dream about there is no choice for a serious birder but to go to Canon or Nikon. Or, I suppose, to go with the big Sigma. But I didn't buy into Pentax for the chance to buy Sigma lenses.
But it's a moot point, Pentax can't even release a high quality 1.4X teleconverter, it'll be years before we see anything above and beyond the DA* 300/4. Prove me wrong Pentax, I dare you.

When I bought my stuff from RRS I called them because I had a few questions. Their staff are very knowledgeable and I'm sure could answer your question. They are great people to do business with.

Well, I'm jealous you got that lens so I'm not going to do all your research for you:-).
I guess if you were worried about weight you wouldn't have bought that lens!
If it were me I'd run out and get a big ole carbon Gitzo tripod and a Wimberley gimbal head and plates to match.
Cheap out on your support and be dissatisfied with your blurry photos.
Congrats on your purchase and I can't wait to see your photos!

I didn't think I would ever have to defend Canon but a look through Tom Munson's galleries show plenty of Canon 40D images for examples, a good place to start would be the Eagles gallery.

iTod, there is a way to install V4 on your computer and it's easy, there was a recent thread. I'll see if I can find it.

Slideshow applications?

Funny you should mention that, I got an e-mail offer from Pinnacle for Studio 14 Ultimate bundle download version for $130, normally $350, they say. I've been checking around trying to figure out if it does good slideshows. The thing is I have little need for video and even if this is a great deal is it that much better than Proshow Gold which is $70?

Thank you Pingflood:-).
Also if I may add to Pingflood's suggestions. There are many big time shooters around these eagles right now and I'm listening to all their tips. The biggest one for me has been to shoot manual. We're shooting a lot of times in cloudy, today it was snowy, grey, days. On top of that the eagles are really feisty at first light and when the light is fading in the afternoon. This means high ISOs and wide apertures in order to get the highest shutter speeds. But the thing about a cloudy grey day is that once you find the right exposure to get the white of the eagle's head and tail right on the edge of blowing out but not blowing out so that you have the max exposure for his dark body you can stick with this exposure for a long time. A guy was saying today that when he got the exposure right for a bright part of the water it wasn't right for a darker part of the water. I told him we aren't taking pictures of the water we're taking pics of the eagles:-). This is why the last pic I posted is high key, the sky is totally blown but I wasn't taking a picture of the sky, I was taking a picture of the eagle and in order to properly expose him, the sky had to go. His head and tail aren't blown and we can see detail in his body and wings, end of story. Shooting manual has freed me of worrying about exposure once I find it, leaving more time to try to get sharp pics which is very very hard in it's own right. Bright sun, I find, is much harder to properly expose these birds.
Of course these high key images aren't a freebie. Sometimes just getting the head and tail right on the edge tends to wash out contrast in the body, it's a fine line getting detail in the body and washing detail out of it and this is a big issue I'm working through now.
I guess another way to state this is I'm working on the best ways to gain contrast back into the photo in post:-), BUT every once in a while I get a high key photo that is just beautiful practically right out of the camera and I'm trying to figure out if this can be achieved on purpose or if it's a function of some kind of magic light and if so I want to be able to recognize this light and take advantage of it. Right now I believe it's the latter.

Alls I know is that whatever it's supposed to be isn't for sale at B&H so it might as well be the DA* 1.4X weather sealed teleconverter for the good it's doing any of us. Jeesus now we have to wait through 2 or 3 years of this BS rumor?

I checked this program out and it is pretty cool, works well.
But Nick SD I see a very evident loss in quality of a DVD slideshow. It's actually looks better on my tv, my computer monitor really shows the lo res of the files. Are you saying that your pictures look as good in the burnt slideshow as they normally do displayed on screen?

Seagulls aren't nearly as dramatic as eagles but they get the job done.

As soon as you mention cataloging you've really stepped into LR's domain. Now I have never worked with ACDC Pro so I have no knowledge of that program at all or if it does cataloging.
There are tons of tutorials and stuff to help with Lightroom, but I agree with you in that if there is someone locally to ask questions of it helps a lot. I'm that way also, if I can watch you do something and ask questions I learn faster but I didn't know anyone to help me like that so I had to go it alone, so to speak, but I've been able to make progress. It may take longer but if a guy persists, progress can usually be made:-).
