Sensor Dust & Small Aperture
Posted By Michael Piziak

ok, so the macro lens won't do it but small aperture does.

I switched my lens to the Pentax 55-300 and cranked it up to F22 and I see the same dust spots. See 2 images below.

I've used the Rocket Blower many times, but I guess I need a sticky pen to get this dust off.

Sensor Dust & Small Aperture

I read that small aperture makes sensor dust more apparent in the image. I see this only with my Macro lens when I have the aperture small.

Question though: Does the macro lens also make the sensor dust more visible also ?

Question 2: Is it possible that the dust in the images is from defects in the macro lens ?

See image below. I generally clone and smudge to get rid of the defects:

Cropping to 400mm from 300mm

Am I correct that one would crop by 25% to go from a 300mm to a 400mm image.

I was going to get a 1.4x, but have read many times it is better to just crop.

In the below image I took 25% (of the pixels) off the width and 25% (of the pixels) off the height of the image. (oops, I think I actually cropped to 79% on the height). But that's the idea, right?

Yes, #3 is the side of the padlock from #1.

That was fun. Perhaps I'll do it again sometime - will give me an excuse to use my extension tubes again :)

I have decided to scrap this idea as far as 2x teleconverters goes - no use to try it if it will be too dim to shoot with.

I wander if like a 1.4x teleconverter would have enough light to shoot?

Can't find this lens in the database here. It's a manual lens. Would like to learn more about it or see photo samples.

What about manual focussing with them ?

---------- Post added 02-01-15 at 06:49 PM ----------

I may give one of these a try at these costs. I see Sears made one also which was made in Japan.
What is "auto" about these ?

Got this Asahi Pentax Macro F4 100mm lens off eBay about a year ago. The owner thought it had fungus on the lens, but it turned out to be where some glue was showing itself between the outer elements (lens). No one wanted to bid it up, so I got it for about $20. The image quality hasn't been effected from the residue.

My photo today with this lens:

I'm fairly sure this is a milkweed plant.
Most plants are dead in the fall here (now), but interesting seeds are still stuck to them.
