K-X issue with flash - is this normal behavior?

Thanks for the help chaps,

I'll have to find my manual and get out my microscope,... (sorry, cheap gag due to the size of the manual,)

My wife's explanation of the sound is more sensible as I suffer from Hyperacusis so even a small sound can sometimes seem a lot louder. The flash has never failed me yet, and there has never been any form of smell occurring.

I tried this evening in a moderately dark room, using the standard kit lens, and it only seems to make the sound the first time it's used, once I close the flash and try again it doesn't do it.
The only way I can force it to do it is by turning off the camera and back on again.

on a quick note, my k-x has never fired several bursts,... one or two is normal for me, but that could just be due to where the photos are taken and the distance to object.

If I fully press the shutter release (not half way) it just goes off, with no strange sounds... but It's hard to change the habit of a lifetime, and that's the half way press. One thing I have noticed, it depends on how slowly I half press the shutter release, Unless it's my imagination, but it feels as if the shutter release is causing the crackle, buzz.

I may even get a newer Pentax, just wished they made them that little bit more affordable,... considering how cheap you can pick up basic dslr Canons, and Nikons.

Thanks again chaps for the help..

K-X issue with flash - is this normal behavior?

Hi chaps,

I've had my k-x for a fair few years now, but to be honest I've only ever used the flash on a few odd occasions. But its been on these odd occasions that something strange happens with my flash.

First things first, my flash works, so no problem there,.... it's when I half press the shutter that the flash (not to sure how to explain this bit) it makes 1 or 2 very quick short bursts with an unusual sound that almost sounds like it's crackling or sparking/arcing inside the flash unit.

This happens regardless if I have the flash on Auto (or in my preferred method manual popup).
The wife said it sounded like a buzzing sound as the flash made a very short burst (I'm assuming this was the x-k setting up the correct exposure setting)

My explanation may sound over exaggerated but I just wanted to know if this was normal behavior for a pentax or for that matter any dslr.

Appreciate any replies or help...
cheers... sadsack.

I found another version on an italian ricoh site:

Confronto prodotti - PENTAX Photo

Fotografie Qualità: FINE, NORMAL, RAW (DNG) *2
16:9 (4288x2416, 3456x1944)
4:3(3776x2832,3072x2304,2592×1944, 2048×1536, 1280×960, 640×480)
3:2 (4288x2848, 3456x2304)
1:1 (2848x2848, 2304x2304)

I'm just wondering if Pentax do a dslr that has 4288x2416 as a selectable standard.... as a possible upgrade to my kx.... something just like my me super, with a perfect b setting, and a screwable trigger. and a descent battery grip..
where did Pentax go wrong.... lol

cheers for the help chaps..

Thanks Adam,

I've just been having a quick look at the Kr,.... would I be correct in stating that the Kr does have a resolution of 4288x2416?

If it does, it's a pity, because there's not much chance of my getting hold of a new one now....

Hi Chaps... and a very merry xmas to you all...

I've recently started to sort out a few descent images to put onto my nas to show the family.... but I just have a rather odd question to ask.

I shoot with two cameras, one is a (I don't care if it falls on the floor camera) a Fuji Finepix, s4000,... I'm not to bothered about it, as I't came from a mate who was upgrading and it also suffers from the usual fuji full single line of dead pixels. But the output is 4288x2416 which is a totally perfect fit for a 1080p widescreen tv...

But my KX seems to only output at 4288x2848 with these horrid black bars either side.... Is there something that I'm missing or is the the norm for the KX?
I just wanted the very best res from my kx and hopefully to fill the screen without having to start hacking the images with photoshop.

Appreciate any pointers chaps....
sadsack..

Attached 2 images to show what i mean,... i've shrunk these due to size in mb.

gull is on fuji, and coastal is on kx.

That's great chaps......
I'm going to try out all three programs, using the same small folder holding just around 100 images or various sizes, and see which comes in the fastest, I've already tried "Pixfiler" but that seemed to be very very slow even after the data had been scraped, just trying to browse through a folder of thumbnail images forced the program to re-calculate what it needed to do.
{maybe my fault not having a quad core with 16gb of memory).....

thanks again guys......

Hi all,

After doing some research on database / cataloging software I eventually gave in and decided to simply ask other pentax owners what they thought would be the best for my needs.

I'm not after doing any type of editing, the software required is simply to allow me to see thumbnails of images within given folders, (The folders are copies of my burnt DVD backups that reside on a large external HD), My main requirement's are speed of loading and facial tagging, and if possible something that would be compatible with pentax raw images.
backwardly compatible with xp but can also be used on win7.

There seems to be a hell of a lot of software out there but all seem to be full of bells & whistles all trying to outdo each other.
Would really appreciate any type of input chaps...

Battery Question for UnknownVT??

Hi raider,
Did you remember in which slot each battery came from,
If you had the charger directly in front of you, with the power lead coming from the back,

Can we assume that B1 = Slot 1: ect....

If so, you could go through a few set's of older duff batteries which is what I did with unknownVT, and that way you can find out which is the stronger and which is the weaker slot..
For me Slot 4: seems to be the weakest, so UnknownVT said it may be worth changing the batteries around so that the weaker ones get the benefit of being charged in one of the more powerful slots.
If you see what I mean.....

For UnknownVT,
This virgin set from the pack pictured above, State on the side: 08 07TR I've gone through all four and all state the same number and letters.

Nothing wrong with a little OCD,....... my 7 year old Suffers from it, in large quantity's, Unfortunately he gets it from his father. lol

My time is a little tight tonight, but it is my intention to post an image of the unopened eneloop pack including the date. (Funnily enough I can just about make out the date, it's
"2008 07" now that's some serious shelf life).

Are we looking at a discharge of 400mA
Rest period
Then full Charge at 1000mA ------------- if this is correct UnknownVT, let me know and I'll get to work on them tomorrow.

I'll mark the other pack up as "B".
The unopened pack can then be "C".

Will be doing this first thing in the morning UnknownVT, I was hoping to have these discharged by now but its almost 3.30 am and there all averaging 1790 to 1800 discharged, so it's going to be a while yet, I think I'll have to leave them on discharge till the morning .....

I'll Write down the amounts, remove from charger, leave for an hour, then recharge, and I'll up the results later on today.

Night all...

Hi UnknownVT,

Well here is the Eneloops after their charge.

Slot 1: ----------- 1768 mAh ---------------- 117 min -------------- 1.45v 10 sec's after finish 1.44v -------------------- end of 2 hrs --------- 1.46v
Slot 2: ----------- 1891 mAh ---------------- 126 min -------------- 1.45v ------------------------------------------------------- end of 2 hrs --------- 1.46v
Slot 3: ----------- 1908 mAh ---------------- 127 min -------------- 1.46v 10 sec's after finish 1.45v -------------------- end of 2 hrs --------- 1.46v
Slot 4: ----------- 1883 mAh ---------------- 124 min -------------- 1.46v 10 sec's after finish 1.45v -------------------- end of 2 hrs --------- 1.46v

What do you think, ? UnknownVT, ------------------ Is the top up supposed to allow 2000mAh or have I got that wrong?

all the best
sadsack

p.s.
nearly forgot, each Battery went into the charger and was started on charge within 15/20 sec's of each being inserted.
Slot 1: which was giving more juice before has now gone the other way, 1h.57m, compared to slot 3: 2h.7m

Yes, you are correct UnknownVT, this is for the first set of Eneloop's.
They were removed from the charger & numbered a few hours ago, I unfortunately couldn't keep my eyes open any longer and fell asleep, I've still got to go to bed as I need to be up in three hours.
I'll pop these on charge about 8am, once I see "done" i'll give them the extra 2 hours and come back with the readings.

I have another set of Enerloops, that came with a Sanyo charger, in a sealed plastic container, I have not had a chance to open this pack up yet, but the batteries are sitting inside the charger, as if one was going to charge them (if you know what I mean), Do you think it would cause any harm if left like this, or would it be better if they were removed from the sealed pack?

I'll report back with the charged state tomorrow, (oops I mean today).
All the best, and thank you for your time and patience (and links)

It would make more sense for me to do this due to the time the Eneloops finished discharging, (22:30pm) A recharge would be at 11:30 but finishing way before the morning, so I would have no idea as to the finishing time + Top Up.

Do you think it would be a problem for me to do the recharge first thing in the morning, allowing me to have better control over the timings?

Well you beat me to it UnknownVT,
about an hour ago I took my run down Eneloops out of the camera as they were going to be my next target. This will be set One.

Now there is some juice left in these, (not that the k-x meter means anything but it was on orange, flicking on the liveview made them go to almost depleted after about 15 sec's.
turning off liveview and we go back to orange.

So should I just charge these up first as you posted: charge at 0.5C = 1000mA until done then allow the eneloops to sit in the charger for another 2 hours for the top-up charge.
This may seem a bit of a stupid question, but the part where you mention "sit in charger for another 2 hours" would I correct in saying that this is done by your own means, I.E. alarm on mobile, or whatever you choose to tell you two hours?

Then 1 hours rest,
then put them through a discharge cycle at 0.2C = 400mAh
and please let us know what you get for the real capacity.

Thanks, UnknownVT

p.s.
agreed, slot one can have the strongest battery on each change of set.

------------------------

Looking at my readings and what you mentioned before "The Maha/PowerEX C9000 is IMHO the best consumer grade battery charger - I know many will also cite the LaCrosse - but the last time I checked even their top of the line Alpha charger is not that flexible on discharge currents. For a 400mA (=0.2C of eneloop) the follow up charge current is then 800mA - if you want 1000mA charge current - then then discharge has to be at 500mA - not flexible enough to get the ideal.

My C9000 seems to charge up position 1 (left-most) the least - in order of highest to lowest charge mine seems to be 3,2,4,1 - but this is NOT reliable - as it is so dependent on the battery. However position 1 (left-most) seems always to be consistently just a bit lower on my copy."

My first Slot also seems to be the weakest. I haven't really seen a big difference in the other slots, but the 1st is obvious.

Update on discharge UnknownVT,

All AAA's were placed back into the same slots. for discharge.

Slot 1: ---------- 773 mAh ------------ 256 Mins --------------- 1.21v

Slot 2: ---------- 764 mAh ------------ 253 mins ---------------- 1.21v

Slot 3: ---------- 762 mAh ------------ 251 mins ----------------- 1.22v

Slot 4: ---------- 803mAh ------------- 266 mins ----------------- 1.20v

I'm going to do the recharge now as your recommendation: I'm going to put them on now, as it's 3.03 am and I'm in need of some sleep so hopefully they should be done in a few hours.
I will post back the info, and then print out the info for the AA's and do the same to them, No reason to R&A them is there.

I also found a small nail file came in handy to give a little roughness to the battery contacts, much better contact.

All the best

They have had a little more than an hour, more like a couple...... (wrong time of day, 7 year old, Daddy daddy every couple of mins) .... bless him.
But I'm going to do that right now, exactly what you have said. I will come back probably a lot later now that the timings will be correct and give you the amounts.
Just printed out the details, be back soon,

thanks UnknownVT.

edit:

I'm also going to try out some Energizer AA 2450mAh NH15 1.2v HR6 that I brought about a year and a half ago, they all show that there is a small amount of charge in them (not totally dead), (originally charged on the Energizer Charger about 7-8 weeks ago), It would be good if these would come back to life, but I Believe that whether I like it or not, these like my other NiMH's may only hold a charge for a very short period of time.
Still on the good side, practice makes perfect.

sadsack
p.s. AAA's are out of the charger and they feel only mildly warm to the touch, actually even the charger doesn't get hot like I thought it might. But I will still leave them for the period you suggested and do them again, per your details.
Yes your quite right, about the R&A, took me nearly 10 mins to make sure I had the correct readings written down.

This is why I'm don't mind testing some old units first.... (No wonder why these 4 AAA went through an R&A so quickly).... lol

Here is what the charger says at the moment,

Slot 1: --------------- Slot 2: ------------------ Slot 3: --------------- Slot 4:

724mAh ------------- 742mAh --------------- 784mAh ------------- 869 mAh
95 min --------------- 97 min ----------------- 102min --------------- 114min (these are obviously going up all the time as the units are still attached).
1.43V ---------------- 1.43V ------------------- 1.43V ---------------- 1.44V

R&A only ---------- R&A only ------------Discharge ------------ R&A only
-----------------------------------------------------then R&A

I do believe it was only a contact issue as they went through the process without a hitch, apart from my miscalculations of course, and also that two were dead to a meter and two were semi charged, in fact slot 3 was one that had the most charge.
What do you think of these measurements, they have only been through one R&A apart from slot 3, and I did read in the instructions that it is possible to do more than one R&A to bring batteries back to near there original state.
Also thank you for the information to the proper charging amounts for these AAA's.

Thank you again UnknownVT..
sadsack

another quick edit....

the times have not changed at all, my mistake.... (I only thought they would)

slot 1 everything the same
slot 2 everything the same
slot 3 gone up to 145v
slot 4 gone up to 145v
