I agree that this is the main issue. Single point focus acquisition for stationary subjects is quite good (in my opinion.)

D500 AF is the same whether or not in lens stabilization is used. I like using "sports mode" VR for birds in flight, but it isn't needed for AF performance but to help a little bit in stabilizing the viewfinder.

This looks like a really solid product. I have used a lot of cameras and I've always felt like the K3 II had the best balance overall when it came to size/ergonomics. I love my D500, but I liked the slightly smaller size of the Pentax. The only thing I disliked about it was the lack of joystick and it looks like they fixed that too.

If they somehow can update their AF game in a significant way that would be a great plus, but I think this will make a lot of Pentaxians happy regardless of that.

I really like the 500 PF a lot. It is one of those lenses that you have to try to really appreciate its advantages (in my opinion). It's not just the weight savings, but the size that I really like. I can keep the lens mounted on my D500 in a Think Tank Streetwalker (original version) Camera bag with the lens hood in place. That is quite an accomplishment, considering the fact that the bag is designed to fit a 70-200 in that slot. The lens is very sharp wide open and takes the TC 14E III very well to the point that I can't tell it's mounted from an image quality standpoint. The AF does struggle a little bit with the teleconverter for erratic birds in flight, but I would say that the autofocus with the teleconverter is similar to the 200-500 native. I find the autofocus to be very fast without the teleconverter and I rarely miss a tracked bird unless I make some kind of mistake.

I feel like we are spoiled now and sharpness is a wash between a high quality zoom like your 150-600 and the 500 PF. If I had to guess, I'd say that the 500 prime would take a teleconverter better than the zoom, but I haven't used that lens so I can't say for sure. The main advantage to me is the weight for someone like me who likes to go on photo walks or shoot from a kayak and prefers to be handheld.

Nice burrowing owl shots. I'm normally not a big fan of wildlife with manmade objects, but I think that the setting really adds to the image on these. Well done.

I have had the best luck with "sports" mode stabilization. It is helpful to keep the viewfinder more steady, but can't remove all movement. Wildlife photography from a kayak is really challenging in windy conditions or in any kind of wake and I don't feel like the stabilization helps a whole lot in those scenario's. My understanding is that the M 4/3 systems have the best stabilization, but I don't have first hand experience.

It takes some practice to learn and I recommend becoming a decent paddler first, since you need to know how to control your kayak properly to be "lined up" correctly for shots. An anchor can also be helpful if in an area with a lot of wildlife activity nearby. I also try to shoot in low tide, since the birds feed the most then. The lower water also tends to have less motion and the sandbars can be a nice place to pull into for a brief stop.

I watched the heron go for this turtle for about 20 minutes before giving up. I hope he ended up ok after being attacked for that long...
