Getting up to speed with a new K-3ii

from the In Depth Review

Track Logging
Like other GPS-compatible Pentax cameras, the K-3 II can log tracks. Positional information is stored as preset intervals (as configured) and up to a specified duration. It will continue being recorded even when the camera is turned off.

Tracks are saved in .KML (Keyhole Markup Language) files, a common format that can easily be imported into various programs, such as Google Earth and Google maps. The screenshot above shows a track that has been imported into Maps.

Performance

Generally-speaking, the K-3 II's GPS delivers the level of performance that would be expected of any modern GPS receiver. During our outdoor testing, initial acquisitions took between 30 and 90 seconds depending on location and obstructions. Except when near tall buildings, we only had to wait about 40 seconds on average. Subsequent acquisitions from the same location were nearly instant.

The overall impact on battery life is negligible. Even with logging enabled while the camera is in standby mode, chances are you won't notice any changes to the battery level.

We observed that track accuracy degraded slightly whenever the camera was stowed away in a bag, and so we recommend to keep the camera unobstructed while logging.

Verdict

Thanks to the fast performance and low battery drain of the Pentax K-3 II's built-in GPS, this camera will appeal greatly to users who make extensive use of GPS-related features. While the K-3 II offers the same functionality as other models paired with the O-GPS1 accessory, it's certainly more convenient to have native support. As an added bonus, the internal GPS frees up the K-3 II's hotshoe, making external flash use more convenient.

In the hands of a skilled user, the Pentax-unique astrotracer allows the use of significantly longer shutter speeds without additional rigging equipment for deep sky exposures. We do wish that it were not as picky in terms of calibration, though. Also, we would have preferred the GPS button on the camera to be customizable due to its trivial function.

A strap like Black Rapid and Peak Design but without release buckles/clips

I recently had an experience that taught me two things

prepare a back up emergency system

and

use it.

I did the first step but did not fully engage it when the fabric connector securing my quick release strap on my Optech USA ultility sling failed and my K 3 + DA * 300mnm lens fell from my hip and hit the side walk.

now I modified my back up emergency system which is now designed so it is always fully engaged.

____________________________

I start with the Op/tech USA utility sling, the UltraFit Hand Strap with UltraPlate and Joby Camera Safety Tether

Camera Hand Strap | Ultra Fit Hand Strap With Ultra Plate

Camera Safety tether for backup protection

_________________________________

I take the string section of the tether and feed it between the plastic female quick release and the strap and then feed the attached d ring through the loop

I attach the d ring ( metal ) to the metal split ring upper right attachment point of the camera body

I attach the uni loop male attachment of the sling not to the split ring but to the hand grip which is affixed to the camera body at the same upper attachment point and the tripod mount on the bottom

result, hand grip is tight to camera, sling via uni loop connected to hand grip and tether connected to camera and sling

best thing about this is that you set it up once and forget

all safety systems are a go

only draw back is I cannot quickly detach sling, and must remove d ring from split ring to do so

__________________________

so the camera and lens is held by the sling and is attached to the sling not only by the sling's quick release system connected to the hand grip but also by the separate safety tether attached to the metal attachment point of the camera by a metal D ring

I was advised to do the same by the experts at my local brick and mortar store since their recovery program cannot recover part of what is on a memory card but will recover all and you are charged for each file recovered.

so if you have more than the missing photos on the card in question, you pay for getting photos you have already copied to your computer months before

I have not had problems using micro sd cards but who knows

this article might be worth a review

Welcome to the forum

as you are discovering, a lot of friendly members willing to try to assist you.

my suggestions are a little different

first I would urge you to spend a little $ you can do you own evaluation before spending more so

you live here in the US so you could contact one of the companies that rent photography equipment.

I have used Lensrental.com ( borrowlenses.com is another company, there may be more ). You select what you want, buy the protection plan you want, I recommend the highest possible.

what you chose is delivered to you and when the rental period is over, you just send it back. Lensrental uses Fed Ex as their standard delivery service.

the other thing to consider is the size of the sensor on your camera and its effect on the field of view of the lens you choose.

As simply as possible, here is what you need to know, the field of view you obtain with any lens used with the APS-C camera body's smaller sensor
is not the same as you would obtain with either a full frame camera's larger sensor

so using a 21mm lenses will give you more of a field of view as using a 35mm lens on a full frame camera.

so to get the same field of view as you might expect ( you want a wide angle right ) you must use a wider lens not a 21 but perhaps a 15mm

these are just an example, and not designed to be exactly accurate

Full Frame Sensor vs Crop Sensor: Which is Right For You?

Crop Factor Explained

I have both the 21mm Limited and the 16-85mm zoom and I like them a lot

the 20-40mm Limited has a good reputation ( it is a " Limited " after all )

I don't know anything about the other lens you are looking at.

once you decide what you want, decide on new vs. " experienced " if " experienced " is an option, check out what might be offered at the forum's marketplace. [ " buy/sell" ]

I have had good luck dealing with various members selling their " experienced " equipment there.

Time moves on of course

and it is in the interest of the manufacturer to create new product and desires

but it does seem to be a " changing of times " should Pentax only start producing new lenses with the KAF4 mount

are we reaching a similar turning point as when Pentax went from the screw mount to the K mount systems ?

I'm definitely a newbie but I have to agree 100% with my favorite Uncle on the forum ;)

if the OP doesn't have a tripod, the same experiment might be done if the camera body can be placed on a solid object as opposed to trying to hand hold the camera and lens

correct ?

I f I read this chart correctly

The Pentax Camera Lens Compatibility Chart the following Pentax Camera bodies:

K-1 [ and its replacement ], K-3 II [ and its replacement], K 3, K-50, K-70, K-S1, K-S2

will be or are able to handle the KAF4

9 total
______________________

these cannot:

K-01, K10D, K20D, K-7, K-5, K-5 II,
K-5 IIS, K-30, K-500, K-m, K2000, K-x, K-r
K100D Super, K200D, *ist D series, K100D, K110D

I wonder how many folks use the camera bodies that are incompatible with the KAF4

why would Pentax go away from its strength: the ability to use older camera bodies?

" **Because the aperture is controlled electronically, this lens can only stop down when used with compatible cameras. The Pentax K-50, K-S1, K-S2, K-3, K-3 II, and K-1 are supported via a camera firmware update; the Pentax K-70, Pentax KP and all 2017 or newer bodies will work out of the box. The aperture diaphragm will always remain wide-open on unsupported bodies.

In an nutshell, this lens fully compatible with recent DSLRs but shouldn't be used on older bodies or film cameras. "
