Good: New roadmap, new lens

I didn't mean to suggest that you're not allowed to have the best if you don't necessarily require it, I just meant that I've seen a lot of complaints on this forum that have seemed kind of aimless. I think that for the most part, the photographic equipment that currently exists (Pentax or not, of this decade or not) is more than good enough for most people's needs.

And I definitely don't like the suggestion that people who want high-performance modern lenses should just shut up and buy some "good enough" legacy gear. Hoping for availability of a second-hand item is not an acceptable strategy to rely on.

It would be nice if more people here would clearly express a reason for their needs and wants, usually I just a see a lot of noise though.

I'm not expecting Pentax to be Phase One or something, but given the quality of their recent cameras for their respective price-points I have a lot of admiration for how Ricoh is allowing the brand to develop. I'm happy to save as much money as I can and Pentax is offering camera performance right now that is pretty exceptional, I just want to see them deliver on lenses to match.

Why? Because I put a lot of work into my images and I'm not doing so just to have flawed glass negatively affect my work. I'm not made of money though so I look for compromise where I can.

What am I shooting? Mostly things which would fall into the architecture category, but not squarely. A lot of stark geometry for sure, I do a fair bit of panoramic stitching and focus stacking so edge performance is critical for me.

And I do large prints pretty often that go into gallery settings. So the reasonable viewing distance argument doesn't really work because, like it or not, people are sticking their noses in the prints to scrutinize quality. I'm guilty of it myself, I enjoy well-made photographs that are nicely printed.

Exactly. You can do so much with a 50mm provided that you're at least a decent photographer.

I'm happy with having a 50mm mounted most of the time. I'm not interested in extreme focal lengths so 35/50/85 will cover 95% of my needs, but I expect them to be top-notch. The quality of the two 50/1.4 images released with the K-1 Mark II announcement, and the prospect of a March/April release, is kind of the only thing keeping me with the brand right now. I'm all for supporting Pentax's progress but they definitely aren't making it easy.

I went from a Canon EOS 5DS R to the Pentax K-1 (first Pentax purchase excluding a second-hand 6x7 in the past), and am very happy with the camera, but after trying about 9 different lenses (31/43/77 having been my favorite but not exactly where I want to have my money invested) I'm not exactly satisfied with the quality currently available to me. In light of the 85/1.4 being moved to 2019, and the 50/1.4 still not even being priced, I am now considering dropping Pentax because I really can't be waiting another two years or so to have 35/50/85 covered which, from my perspective, is the bare minimum.

It is a tough position, I really love the K-1 and I'm sure that the new D FA* lenses are going to be excellent but I want to make pictures now and having to settle on sub-par equipment for another year or more is not something that I'm interested in doing. I like the camera enough that I would even consider coming back to Pentax in a few years (if I do leave) when they actually have things on shelves but in the short term I really feel at a loss for utilizing the potential of the K-1.

I have the 28-105 and it the only zoom lens that I've felt was worth owning, I use it on my K-1 and am fairly pleased. I do, however, prefer primes in every situation. I don't even care about f/1.4 because I'm often between f/4-f/11 but I do want and need the quality offered by these $1k+ primes. I understand that my needs are not typical but it seems to me that Pentax has plenty of offerings for people who don't want or need top-shelf performance, so I really wish they would put more attention into the area that they are severely lacking in.

The 3 Amigos For Landscapes

Those lenses are excellent choices, I've used all three on my K-1 and I highly recommend them.

The 77mm is very sharp, I've even shot it at f/22 using pixel-shift and gotten pretty stunning results.
The 43mm is a lens that I really enjoy but it doesn't have the best edge performance, however, I have made it work in a number of situations.
The 31mm is also top-notch, shooting it between f/4-f/11 (pixel-shift or not) will likely find the most use in landscape settings.

Software Support for Pixel Shift

Gotcha, I'm mostly shooting scenes without motion. When I suspect that there will be motion in an image I make sure to shoot a non-PS image for backup and as a source for unaffected pixels. Although, when I've found artifacts in my PS images so far, I've very easily been able to clone them away from information elsewhere in the file; this of course is made easier because of the subjects that I tend to work with.

My point being, I've never felt that I was limited by developing my PS images through ACR. I do tend to do the bulk of my processing in Photoshop though, so I understand that other workflows may benefit from the additional controls offered by different software.

Software Support for Pixel Shift

I'm confused, I've been developing Pixel Shift images from my K-1 through Adobe Camera Raw pretty much since I got it, what am I missing?

I know that there is some support because I have tested PS/non-PS images of the same scene in the software to see the differences and there is a very clear advantage to the PS files.

Item for Sale
SMC Pentax "K" 85mm F1.8

Asking Price
350.00 USD

Item Location
Pittsburgh (United States)

Item Description
I marked lens as being in excellent condition but it is probably closer to near mint, really not a flaw to point out other than some very minor paint scuffs which are apparent only upon close inspection.

I'm traveling quite a bit at the moment so I couldn't manage to make any more images than what are provided in the listing. More images can be arranged upon request but I'm not certain how quickly I'll be able to get them to you.

$350 / OBO + shipping

I am also selling a couple of other "K" series lenses, the 35/3.5 and 135/2.5, I'm open to bundle prices if anyone is interested in multiple lenses.

Thanks!

A bit wide for my taste for full-frame cameras, stepping up to a 35mm instead. Really an awesome lens though, if funds weren't tight I'd absolutely keep it, especially if I could afford to pick up an additional APS-C body.

Anyway, lens is in incredible condition both cosmetically and functionally, clean glass and hardly a mark on the body. Includes caps.

Asking $300 + shipping / OBO - PayPal preferred

Enjoy!
