a Full-Frame System MILC to boost Pentax market share...

The fellow is having fun and I don't think he is in need of an intervention.

It's fine to dream and there have been some replies to this thread with credible reasons why this flying machine idea is not likely to make it off the ground :^)

---------- Post added 04-22-18 at 08:20 AM ----------

With this idea, they would have to convince users of other systems to buy the Pentax MILC and I think the Pentax AF performance would be a major hindrance. Pentax AF may be suitable for a great number of potential customers but people often buy based on what they think they need or what they anticipate needing in the near future... and I think many will believe they need better AF.

They would have to convince Pentax users to buy this Pentax MILC. I might be interested if it is smaller and lighter. Taking a quick look at how Sony has implemented their mirrorless camera system, I see the lenses are no smaller as they appear to have an adapter grafted onto the back of each lens. Larger-than-necessary lenses make the system less appealing to me. It is like strapping a Mini camera onto the back of a cargo container lens. So, for this Pentax MILC, I would like to see smaller lenses native to the new mount and Pentax making lenses isn't part of the proposed idea....

This Pentax MILC might be interesting to me because I could use some of the smaller Nikon primes.. looks like Pentax will not be making small primes and small lenses even if they aren't as preciously perfect as the new 50mm lens do interest me... but the body would need to focus those Nikon primes.

Comparing Pentax pixel shift images to images by all other manufacturers is a false comparison. The Pentax body has the capability to produce nicer images and that is a plus but I think the average consumer will not make a purchasing decision based on a capability that is useful in only some situations.. imagine if Pentax advertised only PS images to show the capability of their camera and the consumer learned post purchase that the quality of image is less for any picture taken in the majority of time that person will use the camera...

There are no minimum requirements to update camera firmware. You do not need to buy a camera already updated and you not need to buy an older camera so it will be compatible with your OS.

There may be OS restrictions with image editing software such as Lightroom (I imagine so) or Pentax' own Digital Camera Utility (from comments seems to be no problem for Vista). However, camera firmware is updated by downloading the appropriate file from Pentax/Ricoh website (possible on Vista) and copying this file to an SD card (possible with Vista but need an SD card reader) and then popping that SD card into your camera...

K1 and Using Vintage Lenses

The KP could be a good choice. People argue it isn't all it should be as it isn't a K-3 iii but it might be just right for your use. I believe results in low light will be better than 80D; will this be helpful for you?

---------- Post added 03-31-18 at 07:09 AM ----------

Well, this could still be accomplished by using the K-1 as it is but then using it in crop mode when that will be advantageous. Certainly, the K-1 costs more than either K-3 or KP and some would cry heretic for using the K-1 in crop mode.. I suggest this idea to Durf he could use the old wide angle lenses for wide field of view as well....

I think your selection will work.. it looks very much like the cheaper version of the hood at B&H for which I have pasted a link below. I have no reservation the cheaper hood (I suspect is very similar to yours at Ebay) will work but I will buy the more expensive one because it has filter threads and I will use those. I post the link to my choice at B&H and from there you can find your version. B&H has questions answered and reviews.. Sensei 52mm Quick Clip Lens Hood LH-QC52 B&H Photo Video

The firmwares I have used all have the same file name even for different versions. K-1 v1.3 & v1.4 were both fwdc228b & my K-5 were fwdc209b. If this pattern is true then, yes, the K-m would have a different file name like fwdc201b or whatever.

What the Pentax KP should have looked like

Now, this is a good idea!

I do admit the top of the camera looks nice with the retro dials and the two traditional command dials remain so it is a simple matter to ignore both the full stops only shutter speed dial and the ISO dial that requires a shift of the grip for it to be used.

rippin' !! :^)

+ of course, the retro dials will still serve a purpose.. they can be twiddled to set exposure mode. then, the user can get to business with the two command dials. this really is a good combo of retro look [& setting mode] + practicality [adjusting exposure without shifting grip]

When a young 'tater tot, my sister loved french string beans. She alone liked them kind of beans.. they regularly found their way to the table so she would have something to eat and leave the rest of us in peace. Most of the beans were discarded after she was full but we kept cooking them, dinner after dinner. She just couldn't eat enough to make it anything other than a waste of money. Because she was family, it didn't feel right to leave the door ajar so she would sneak off to the Sassers.. there were some days, though.....

I want to compliment your effort.

However, even though you used CAPS for a portion of your thread title, the 'why i won't' thread is outpacing this thread 10:1 :^(

It is easy to see interests lie in expressing discontent.
To keep things positive, maybe future 'why i won't buy' threads could be titled 'Why I Will buy any camera other than a PENTAX'

'won't' is so depressing :^)

Rather than a big forehead, I see a surprised look; the camera's eyebrow is raised in shock. I like the look of your drawing.

Sigma don't want to make lenses for us so it don't matter if they lenses fit or not. I say lower the brow. :^)

Onaside note, I have read the KP is only a little smaller than the K3 and this is true with respect to strict measurement. However, there is less camera under the mount of the KP so any camera bit equaling the height of the K3 is only the pointy K head.

I wonder if they could have reduced the size of the point on top and had a noticeably different height.. perhaps, but maybe they thought it was more important to continue the style of the K-1. Either way, I think the KP is still practically smaller than K-3

After M, I always think of Tv mode
I forget, though, that using P can be like using either Av or Tv, as you like

---------- Post added 01-28-17 at 07:12 PM ----------

Tony's comment about the mode dial was a bit hyperbolic given that [almost] all other brands use similar dials.

That the Pentax mode dial sits at the top of a slippery slope into the maelstrom with the smart dial being the banana peel underfoot is a statement of opinion.

I don't know if Tony should be lumped in with people that have the attitude Pentax should build a camera to suit them.. but there are some people that have the better interests of Pentax at heart and will not tolerate less than suitable and timely improvement.

I have seen the first Tropic Thunder movie

..honestly, I don't recall if there is a plaid mode. I think Space Balls introduces a Ludicrous Mode that is faster than HyperSpeed. During Ludicrous Mode travel, rather than all the light from stars stretching into Star Trek streaks, the light shining on the actors becomes some kind of tartan with orange..

So, I think 'plaid' is what happens to you if you slap the Ludicrous Mode button :^(

---------- Post added 01-28-17 at 02:16 PM ----------

I know you weren't asking me, but I do use M mode.
With all the modern aids and image review, I don't consider it very M.. at least not the traditional type of M. I mostly use it for predictability from one image to the next.

I don't consider it better than Av or Tv
M can be slower.

Which software are you using ?
Does it support the K-1 files ?

I ask because I use a not-supported 4/3 camera, EP-L6, with my raw editor by changing the camera ID in EXIF to a subsequent model, EP-L7, and, while the software will then recognize the files, they are all viewed in software 2/3 stop underexposed. The exposure is otherwise fine but whatever default ..stuff the software does to imported files just aint quite right.

wait, wait.. wait... :^)

Those cryptic markings are confusing..?
Why ?

SCN & AUTO are not unique to Pentax
B & M & P have been around some short period of time..
Either C# or U# are typical abbreviations for customizable registers

...Are Av & Tv confusing ?
If so, that is a bit ironic because Tv & Av are ..retro markings. Yes

Awareness of the meaning of Tv & Av makes TAv understandable..
TAv & Sv are Pentax things, though, so I can excuse the confusion here :^)

---------- Post added 01-28-17 at 11:16 AM ----------

The shutter speed dial on the retro cameras is a most difficult method of control required by the retro-grade gestalt. I choose aperture and then set exposure with shutter speed. Why do I want to adjust shutter in full stops.. and, if I want to adjust shutter in 1/2 stops, I must perform some secondary step with the retro camera.. :^) I am sorry but the command dial of the not-retro cameras is a single step process and does not require two steps as do the retro cams.. :^|

Now, maybe you like using the shutter dial and that is fine. But that doesn't make the shutter dial experience more 'authentic', to quote Bagger Vance.

Plus, command dials have been around 30 years. They are retro as well.

Ibis is a bird.

---------- Post added 01-28-17 at 11:24 AM ----------

It isn't

But, it may be fun for some people
Some people prefer cars with manual shift transmissions. Some people like to live on the high plains and drive a car with the engine coolant thermostat frozen open.

There are all kinds of different things to enjoy but it doesn't mean one is better than the other. Packing snow in the radiator so the engine will warm enough to blow tepid air at a frozen windshield does not make for 'authentic' driving.

---------- Post added 01-28-17 at 11:34 AM ----------

Setting priority modes in this way be more fun.
It is not more simple.
If you think it is more simple, there is no argument that will change your mind...

Have you been able to convince people that setting three dials to A is easier than setting one dial to P ?
