for the SD speed,... as of now, SD is slow, slower to write and read, compared to CF, canon and nikon cameras, would not be able to sustain the speed they need with current class 6 sdhc cards,.....

now for the rumour,... so far nothing from samsung,...
but did run into a store,.... do you carry pentax,... no, not right now, but soon,
we are waiting for the new product lineup, before we carry Pentax,...
they only had canon and nikon,....

currently want a full frame , not a sports camera, and 1/2 price of a D3 .
first come , first serve,.... sony made an annoucement,.... nikon probably is probably in production,....and canon,... nothing yet, probably no 5d replacement,
more like a cheaper D3 version, ehm D3 maybe.
for the distinguished famous photographers, they don't need it,
they probably have a digital back on the hassy, when they need it.

but for me, I'd like at least a 35mm full viewfinder, and no lens calculus,
so full frame be nice.

so what do I think,....
well, for the new camera they 'll need a new shutter,...
different body, different grip,...
new chip,.... new asic
new asic,... they need resource,...they don't have much,...
so it's going to be ,... slow,... and late,..
unless they bite the bullet,...and buy it off the shelf,.. aka sony,...
but they still want to use their own sensor, since the kodak fiasco,...
a pro/ faster camera was on the horizon,... but they did not have market share,
not the production capacity,...
going in circles, noticed,...

what they should do:
- announce a full frame, and deliver
- get a faster shutter, new asic/cpu, and new AF module,
with the k20d guts, and deliver,
- get the 645d dusted off, do a 300 limited edition, for select pro photographers,
40-48mp, and get moving
- outsource the production
- OEM the internals for sony, to stay float on volume,...

or move over, sell it off, and be done with it.
oops, they done that with P/S ,... canon / sony was /is eating their lunch

so what it's going to be for dinner ?

So a 500 gig SD card is coming soon, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'll try to find that article, which was from a very reputable online source.

Cheers,
Cameron
Voigtlander Nokton 58mm F/1.4 Review!

thanks for your images from you heart.
currently I'am trying to get to the sharpes point, but as you said, sharpness is'nt everything. so maybe I could do both , with this lens, learning,... need to go out and just shoot,...

note: the apereture thing, they way you use it in closer range, works for you,
once focus is in more distance, it realy does need to be stopped down to f2 to gain the contrast, the bokeh does not change much, since the sensor is smaller than the aperture.
maybe I'am just wet, behind my lens,... hope I don't get moldy,....

This lens has had the side effect of teaching me that sharpness isn't everything, its just one thing. Sometimes you just don't need or want it.
probably , should just get it , and see for myself,....since I shoot, f2+, I might like it,...

for the Zeiss,... how did you find the bokeh ??
since on photozone.de and some other posts, I heard,
that the bokeh is harsh.

did get the 58mm nokton,... and currently waiting for the katzeye split screen,...
to see, if I could get some decent portrait shots out if it.

also noticed, with IS enabled, outdoors, I'd get more often blurry shots, even with high shutter speeds, focusing is very difficult,... think an eye cup mag 1.2x,... to add,... the more I try, the more I think a AF 50mm is good enough,...

back to bokeh,... on aps,.. shooting 1.4 or 1.7 don't make sense,... since the aperture, does not cover the sensor, as such, it's just diffusion, if you'd like the effect, might as well get a hasselblad softar filter,...
think it needs f2.2 to start cover the sensor,.. as such belive, f2.4 and up is good for this lens, F2.0 still a litle glow , what might be what you'd want.

distance shots and highlights do have BA , but think for portraits, might not be a problem, seam to perform better on closer range.
handling is good, size is small, wish it had a clipon hood,.. did get an alu screw on hood, but is also to short, still makes it usable for buildin flash, what makes it a joy, aka lighter to use,...
next, need to get my old tripod replaced, to have a solid foundation,....
noticed on my Metz, it does not know the focal length, even thought I select it on the body,...

wish for a full frame asap,... so far no new from samsung / pentax,...
meanwhile sony is in the pits,.. .and canon will have a curveball too,..
and nikon be in the race up front,....
now that I develope slowly a nag for good MF lenses,...
the nikon also supports, zeiss and voigtlander,... not to mention , also some nice AIS lenses, ( my buddy has a bag full of them,...if I could only ask,..)
the 35mm AIS 1.4 be a good one too,...
the sony be good too, exept , need to buy sony,.... and the 85mm is $1400,... outch,...

now for an experiment,.... ( thought I did that a lot in the past), I pu on my leftover wcon .7 from oly on the nokton,... not quiet as pritty,... it's 105mm in front,... flares , like no tomorrow,... again,... at 2.4 start shaping up, and at F4,
actually like it better than the zoom, have not done live testing, and convenience wise does not make sense, it's another 2 lbs of glass and steel,... so a 40mm nokton, seams to be more logical,.. that one also comes with a closeup lens, for the pinch,... do mave also a mcon35,... just wonder if there is an say 0.5 or 1.0 diopter closeup lens,... most of them are too strong,... might as well change the lens/macro.

back to my corner, need to raplace my 54mz-3,... no p-ttl, no ttl only auto,..
no wireless, no hss,....... want to try out the ray flash,.. to cover portraits, closup, macro range,... but that one would not work in auto,... and don't want to use manual all the time,...

looking at the 35mm da 2.8 macro too,

just got my voigtlander 58mm 1.4 ,... thought it's not AF, need to get a split screen,
and it's not for distance shots PF/CA, but redition and bookeh is good,
and can't find another flaw,.... thought the zeiss does not extends, but has other flaws,... for all inteded purposes, a perfect lens,....

now thought, I 'd like a 35mm AF macro lens , aka 50mm on crop sensor,....
thinking the voigtlander 40mm 2.0 what comes with a closeup lens, might be an alternative,.... due, the bookeh and redition,.... most of the shots won't be macro anyway, and those lenses do focus, close enough 0.45m , ~1.4 feet,....
and on wider angle, shots, the AF is not that reliable, due, larger are AF points,...

it all, don't make sense, since I already have an 18-50mm 2.8 macro sigma, what does everything,.... faster, but ,... not reliable, nor does it have the redition or pop.

if I could get an full frame , and be better in PS, I'd be shooting zoom, zoooms, but for right now, primes , seam to be the only way, to squeeze, a tiny bit more out it.

anybody tried the 40mm ultron ?

the other option, might be the zeiss 35mm distagon

what you think? should I just shoot my zooms, and stop dreaming ?

couple of thinks,...
Question : What you are saying is that Pentax is mainly a camera manufacturer and Samsung an electronics manufacturer. But if you say you are a true camera manufacturer does it mean we can expect a top model, the one that Sony, an electronics manufacturer, is announcing at present?

Answer : I can only speak for the USA market. Top models only own a small market segment, I think around 5% of the professional area. And besides a middle format Pentax, it was never an area Pentax aimed at. We have always remained on the consumer level, which is where the volume is. A more advanced camera is likely to show up in the future but I don't know anything about a specific plan. I am certain we are checking it out but for it to really happen, is as clear as mud. We have done some research with the Pentax digital 645 but we have decided it is not the right product at this moment.

does not look good, for seeing a high end body,... focusing on the consumer market,...
also did abandoned the 645 ,...
since Nikon is buying sensors from sony, don't see pentax going that route,
as such, don't see a full frame for 2009,...

just wish for a full frame ,...
canon is going to roll out 5D II,... ~$3.5k
and sony has a 24.6MP in the works,... ~2.9k ??

interesting note:
the D300 has the same vertical grip mounting approach,....

so for 2008, I'll see the K20D hold up,
but for 2009, it's going to get tough, to stay

sony is revamping their flash system,
sony will push high res fold out LCD
sony is pushing HDMI video out
sony will increase speed performance, and stick to 12bit A/D
sony will push 10-12bit+ HDMI /high res screens
sony will have new lenses, Zeiss glass, to support high res full frame
Nikon has buildin wireless flash support, and GPS support,...
Nikon and Sony will push new batteries
Nikon will have 14bit option
canon will push new sensor, to iso 12500 ,....
sigma HSM, don't see a clear support path for pentax or sony
tamron will push in with more lenses for Pentax

Pentax, don't know, but they need
- new AF sensors
- new sensor processing asic
- might get a better LCD than the competition,
- push the ISO, one more time,
- come up with something new

just my 2 cents, Rob

hmm, don't like the sound of it,....
but for my guess, more like , put on ICE,...
kodak is notorious, for their horrible price on larger ccd's and deliver problems,...
so once pentax gets their partnership mfg going, and have secured there source,.... there still be a 645D waiting,... maybe I'am dreaming, meanwhile, we should be happy to see, that pentax sees the priority, to push a pro level DSLR in aps/ff format to market
just my 2 cents, Rob

go to a store and try it out,... your hands will do the talking,....
if you don't end up shooting for hours in vertical,.... you don't need it
for me a must ,grip, batterie and all, just used to it.
workaround, hold camera vertical, use left hand for trigger,...
do like the grip better, did add some rubber strips, since I'am used to beefier ones,

am'I missing something ?
on my canon was able to set raw + jpeg,
raw is raw, but the camera lcd preview was B&W, including yellow or sepia filter,....
that was great, did my conversions on the mac, but the B&W preview was great,
now I can't find it on the pentax,.... can pentax put that in firmware ?
can't realy convert on camera one by one just to view,... if I'am going to target B&W output, still need to be able to shoot raw, especially with raw, and still get B&W on camera LCD,.....
keep me posted,
thanks , Rob

for me , not much better than slides , guess less than 7 .
the reds are better than canon
shadows are bad compared to negatives

bottom line, add a little fill light where ever you can,
it's a great studio camera.
try to keep the histogram to the right,
good for midtones, good for shadows , ~ev+1/3- 1/2
bring it back in RAW , nice skin gradient, nicer shadows

what you mean cheaper than C&N ? they have the more glass and cheaper

for most parts it's a catchup, due pentax first 10mp camera, some upgrade,
some catchup,... aka good enough,... some switch, from subaru to audi,...
this year it's pentax, 2008 it's sony,... and canon is still #1 (take a look at the PJ's)

for now, the stumbling block is, lens availability, from pentax/sigma/tamron for K-mount,... and current and future CCD availability form sony,....
after that , distribution,...available stock,....

now still waiting for the 645D to materialize,....
2008 should be the year for digital medium format, to establish a boom,
think, pentax could have another sell out there, since lots of 645,67, users went dslr full frame instead,...

2007 pentax K10D DSLR
2008 pentax 645D medium format

just my 2 cents, Rob

for starters 18-55 50-200 is fine
from the film/full frame, 28-70 70-200 2.8 as workhorse,
on the crop dslr, 16-45 50-135
went for the sigma 18-50 2.8 macro, since the 16-45 was not in stock,
might as well, as bibble pro has the distortion correction for it, and not for the 16-45, looks like the pentax is nicer to work with extra 2mm and nice color
sigma 24-135mm since it's closer focusing and wider than 50-200,
and the pentax 50-135 not available yet,
for outdoors the 70-200mm tamron is on my list.
all depends on the shooting needs/habits

pentax could double their market share,
if they could offer a dslr with canon mount,....

for my taste, there should be one mount for all dslr cameras,
and an adapter for all old lenses. (period)

will never happen,... that's why my mercedes rims don't fit my volvo,
and the volvo rims don't fit subaru, and the subaru rims .....
it's round, and has 5 holes in it, how difficult is it to have a standard rim ?

that sounds interesting, thought I'am no ps freak,
here is an article
http://clluengo.lbl.gov/Documents/SPIE2000.pdf

for B&W, I add grain,;
upsample to final print size, and add grain, to paper,
for the printer it can resolve, this will give an aperant sharpness, and the typical B&W look.

other option is, to stich, shoot on tripod, do a pano sequence for every scene and light change, not doing it, due exorbitant editing time,...

here is one for you Ben, to talk to pentax,...
3 shot bracket, with IS micro shift, in camera combine, ....
I use bibble pro for raw, the raw is already RGB combined,....
so would be best to do in camera,... and get a 31mp raw file
.... oh add a one shot option to increase spatial frequency.
though 3 shots would have more data, maybe even exposure bracket at the same time,... just an idea,...

shure there is a lag, does feel slower,
Pentax K10D Digital Camera - Full Review - The Imaging Resource!

for most parts, think its psychological, yeah my canon feels faster, shure it's not an F5,
think the sound of the mirror returning has to do with it.
the slowest part is still me, getting the shutter to press, otherwise it take a picture,
maybe pentax can add a soundeffect of an F5, that would make me feel shoot faster,
what about that slow 645D, that should feel real slow compared to the K10D,.....

oh, did I mention, did add some rubber strips to the grip, since I'am so used to bulkier cameras, now it feels like glued on, don't want to put it down, oh you got that effect to even without that extra rubber, must be the camera then,....

I'd settled for moving my files only, since with multiple cards/cameras,
don't like the nuke button,....
also usually keep other files on the card, like firmware, release forms, etc.
if I need to format, tend to agree, use the camera.
the other thing is, in case of transfer trouble, with move/delete, there is a better chance for recover software.

other note: heard down the road, they might offer a wrom flash, write once,...
you shoot on it, and use it as permanent backup,... don't think it's prime time yet,... though down the road, could see 0.5 TB for $20 and 600x speed,...
right now the SD has a 128gb limit,...

for the neck strap, that usually stays in the original package,...
used a tamrac handstrap n15 I think, that was straped diagonal,
to the camera body grip canon, what had a loop on the grip,
and a hand grip. easy to carry/hold. works also great in tight spots with lots of people, where you can hold the camera out of the way,...
the other way is, with a camera west, eather large pocket or a strap/loop on the west, where you stick the lens in the loop, no neck strap.
for the pentax K10D, have not gotten around it, to order a handstrap, with a loop where the tripod socket is, to duplicate my old setup.
do dispise the tripod plastic clamp for the grip, since it throws off the vertical grip position.

sure like to see it tethered working.
though , I did not use it much on my canon.
on some shoots, the editor, likes to preview screen the shots,
and have his mac plugged in. In most cases, swapping cards is acceptable.

for my taste, be nice to have a bluetooth dongle for the K10D,
still write everything to sd, but transfer jpegs via bluetooth, (100M),
directly to the mac, no more cable.

Another Migration from Canon to Pentax

just put my 20D up on e bay, now I'am in the pentax camp.

for others, I'd observed, going to fullframe first, then medium format digital backs, and come back using their dslr for more than 1/2 time, because of workflow and shooting style reasons.

on the reds, observed that too, especially with flouro lightbanks, above iso400 gets real bad, guess it's the rgb sensor design, mostly green a litle red/blue,
rearsync fill helps a lot.

so what improvements do I gain:
- better B&W , less smear, more noise
- use tripod more, due IR remote release
- slight better color
- no worse workflow (fuji is horrible raw conversion)
- better overall handling (thought the grips is too thin)
- dust reduce
- buildin IS

what's missing:
- lens availability
- tilt/shift lenses
- no current full frame

think it's well worse it.

oh, raw file download speed is faster with SD cards,
those extra 2-3min per card, just litle things like that make
it more joyful to use the pentax, it all adds up.
cheers, Robert

my understanding is, that the Pentax brand will be kept, for the camera's,
it's not going to be a wholly subsidiary, all other departments and building be merged with Hoya.
as such, I don't think , the Pentax name will disappear any time soon.
for Samsung, think they will have an increased amount of manufacturing capabilities , that will cover higher volume for pentax,
heard even rumors of new sensor manufacturing, probably licensed technology , what should yield a better price/availability ratio for the pentax/samsung leverage.

just my 2 cents, Robert
