yesterday PM, I came out of the park to the travel lodge in Gardiner to meet George who was driving in

after I finished checking in, I turned around and George introduced himself

what timing

we unpacked and then went back into the park

while waiting for the wolfs north of Slough Creek turn off, I grabbed some photos

a red tail hawk appeared

[ heavily cropped and pp ]

it was soaring a long way up

[ perhaps my best ever BIF ]

you better run

always remember to " take " photos first

with the " mark 1 " eyeballs and store in internal memory [ brain ]

then attempt to repeat with camera and lens and store in other media

IMHO, YMMV

" if the creek don't rise " -

I will be rising early tomorrow to catch a flight from Kansas City to O'Hare in Chicago then to Bozeman International Air Port ( in Belgrade Montana, not Bozeman  and yes I head east to go west, who am I to judge ?) and then drive south to Yellowstone National Park. I expect to fly back on May 21

and " if the creek don't rise" I expect to meet up with gaweidert for a time and enjoy the Park with him for a while

( unfortunately a third forum member had who planned to join us, but he will not be able to - here is hoping he gets well soon. )

___________________________

although I am not sure how often I will be uploading photos about the trip to this thread, I will do my best. not sure about WiFi inside the park

my encounter wish list starts with cougars ( they are there but not very likely at all) badger ( hey last year a group found one ) grizzly and black bear, bison, wolf, eagles, owls, osprey etc, etc, etc,

however my thoughts about trying out astrophotography for the first time appears to be not so good

new moon and expected cloud cover

wish us luck

" Pentax Lens Compatibility Chart

Copyright 2006-2016 Mosphotos.com. All rights reserved.
Pentax bayonet lenses labeled "SMC Pentax" are referred to as "K" lenses in the table below. Other Pentax bayonet lenses have the lens designation as a part of their name as in "SMC Pentax-FA."

Note that "star" lenses work like their "non-star" counterparts: DA* lenses work like DA lenses, FA* like FA, F* like F, A* like A, and M* like M.
Exceptions: FA and F "soft" lenses behave like M lenses in terms of metering.

" Pentax K-Mount Lens Series Explained: The differences between various Pentax lens series

In a nutshell

There are several series of Pentax K-mount lenses; the ones currently being produced include the DA (digital), DA L (cheap digital kit), D FA (full-frame, digital optimized), and FA (full-frame) series. While all Pentax K-mount lenses ever produced are compatible with all current Pentax DSLRs (in some cases with restrictions in that not all exposure modes of the camera are supported by old lenses), there are significant differences between each lens series and each has different features. Furthermore some of the newer lenses do not work with older cameras. We'll be exploring the differences between the various K-mount series lenses in this article "

just looked at the series of articles on astrophotography and found this warning:

" Lens Selection

This first point should not be controversial. Do not use a zoom lens for astrophotography. Use a prime lens and use the fastest one that you can get (f/1.4, f/1.7, f/1.8, and f/2 lenses provide the most flexibility). A wide aperture allows you to use slightly slower shutter speeds, and the lack of depth of field is irrelevant. Having a lens that's very sharp close to its maximum aperture is ideal.

Because astrophotography is a game of minutes or hours, a fast, manual-focus prime lens is a great option for astrphotography. Many other Pentax prime lenses are great and my five best Pentax prime lenses for star trails as well as astrophotography are listed below.

But first, why shouldn't you use a zoom lens? A zoom lens adds an element of added motion to a camera in that the zoom could creep during the shot. More importantly, though, zoom lenses are often up to three stops slower than primes, meaning you need to set your ISO three stops higher to obtain the same results. That introduces significant noise. Using a zoom lens increases the likelihood of image quality loss at a time when every factor available to gain image quality should be used fully.
Zoom lenses are also longer than prime lenses. This shifts the camera-lens center of gravity away from the central point in the tripod. The further the camera-lens center of gravity is from the tripod's center, the more likely that the combination could introduce camera shake.

so perhaps a zoom is not a good idea for that goal???

I never had tried it myself

so far, I just have one, I bought an " experienced " SMC Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 Limited

I grabbed the " experienced " 21mm after reading the opinions ( and warnings ) contained in this thread

the limiteds do they live up to the reputation and why - Page 10 - PentaxForums.com

[ I did have had the SMC Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS ( the best lens in its class ) first but admittedly its construction doesn't allow it to be claimed to be a true " limited " despite sharing the 40mm limited small size and optics ( ? ) ]

but who can foretell the future:

I am renting a SMC Pentax-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited for my Yellowstone trip beginning Monday

I like the 21 but really haven't had much opportunity to use it yet but the landscapes in Yellowstone are calling to me

the 31 limited will allow me to leave 2 primes at home - Kino Precision Japan Kiron 28mm F2 MC P/KA and DA 50mm F 1.8

one of the nicest things about these forums is the willingness of its members to spread the word about deals being offered by suppliers on equipment

who knows how many members take advantage of such notices ?

it's nice to belong to forums where people are willing to do that
