Bahtinov mask dslr | eBay

You can buy them to fit many standard filter threads for dSLR lenses. And... I may buy another mirror lens now that I have this star tracker. That could get interesting...

The focusing at real infinity at night is damn difficult with short lenses. Doable with a 300mm, but damn difficult with the shorter lenses.

Just got one for my birthday. I tried it on all my cameras, and im looking forward to using it on my K-30 for long exposure Astro photography.

That said, I do have some questions. I seem to be missing some features. My K30 never displays a satellite image on the bottom of the info display like the manual indicates it should. I donít have simple navigation on my K30 either.

On the K-01, which is shown as a supported camera on the Ricoh site, only the location option exists. The Astro option isnít there.

So... is there a master list of what cameras with what firmware support which features?

Thanks!

With a K mount lens and a tripod this thing could be a pretty amazing astrophotography rig... except that it doesnít recognize the GPS. I donít suppose there is a firmware that gives gps support to either the Q7 or the original Q, is there?

Get replacement light seal kits. They're inexpensive, they work, and they'll last you 20 years or more. Don't hack it, do it right.

Aaaaand it looks like the 07 pinhole lens has no shutter installed. Which means the pinhole lens has a maximum exposure time of 2 seconds. For a pinhole lens. Not smart Pentax, not smart.

How is the Holga lens vs the 07 Shield lens?

Question says it all. I'm curious about the images produced. I have the 07 and like it very much, and for $19 (shipped) I couldn't pass up the Holga. It's on a slow boat from Hong Kong right now, so I'm excited and want to see shots or hear opinions!

Q, Q7 or Q-S1?

Well crap. I bought the Q7 instead of the Q-S1 because I thought they were the same. The faster write times and better jpeg processing is something I'd REALLY like to have. So now... I guess I'll be looking for a Q-S1 body...

Love my two original Q bodies, but they were just too SLOOOOOOOW shot-to-shot, especially in Raw+ mode.

How does this Holga lens compare to the 07 Shield mount lens? I love my shield mount lens, and the types of images it takes. Will the Holga give me anything cool beyond what it can do? Also, with the amount of blur shown at the edges of the (very) few pics in this thread, it looks like the Holga would make a good portrait lens. Who cares about DOF when everything outside of the center of the frame is blurred anyhow? :)

Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

I got my Q7 body from KEH!

While I like the MX-1, and the image quality compares favorably to the Fujifilm X20... the X20 has an optical viewfinder, and is in the same price range as the MX-1. The X-30 has a digital viewfinder, which isn't as great in my book, but it also has built-in wifi. It's a hard choice between those three.

Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

Well, while scouring eBay for cameras, I found an X20 for a really good price... and then a Q7 for an equally awesome price, from a reputable camera dealer, with the box and all the extras, right down to the little baggies, and "like new" condition... which is not inaccurate. Plus a WARRANTY. So I bailed on the X20 and got the Q7 instead! I looked it up before I bought, and KEH apparently grades gear very conservatively. An "excellent" grade is akin to most people's "mint". And this was true to that. I couldn't tell that this wasn't a new camera. All the baggies were there, the box was a little worn on the outside, but everything inside looked perfect. None of the accessories had ever been opened. Cables and straps still in their ties in the baggies. VERY nice. $161 for a black one. Could have got it for $15 cheaper if I was willing to have a yellow camera. (I was not).

So my search for an X20 or MX-1 will be put off until next month. In the meantime I'll be playing with this Q7. I'm already LOVING the fisheye on the bigger sensor. It looks much more fishy! I'm excited to try the Q7 in low light and with adapted lenses, and compare it to the original Q.

Well, now that I have a Q7 in front of me, there is a menu setting to turn on and off an Eye-Fi card. So it looks like an Eye-Fi is what I'll be getting.

Okay, got that. It's unfortunate that the smart effect filters themselves can't be edited. I like the vintage colors, for instance, but I don't like the softness built in to the filter. I want sharp images, not soft images. But I've got it sorta set up as I like it now.

I'm liking the fish eye on this, compared to the original Q. There's considerably more fish! The camera writes faster and just feels a lot faster to use. The Q7 in RAW+ mode feels faster than the original Q in JPEG mode, as far as write speeds and menu responsiveness go. It's a good upgrade. I can't wait to take them both out and take comparison shots in difficult lighting conditions and see what kind of results I get with the Q7 over the Q.

Also... I have a Q7! WOOOOO! That's 3 Qs in my collection :)

On my original Q, I have the front dial set to different custom image settings. Specifically, reversal film, bleach bypass, black and white, and vibrant. The Q7 doesn't allow custom picture modes set to this dial, just "Smart Effect". I must say, with the original Q I constantly used that dial to select the different modes based on the effect I wanted. It's going to be a big deal to not have that anymore.

Also, I see "User 1" through "User 3" in the area where I can select smart effect filters, but I can't figure out a way to actually create my own smart effect filter.

Granted, I haven't read the manual yet.... but come on, I haven't needed to read a pentax manual for years, because of the super intuitive menus. At least, until now.

Ordered me a Q7, and I'd really like to have wifi transfer of all my photos to my iPhone. What's out there? Must be a fast card, I take a lot of RAW photos!

Bonus points if it works in a Pentax K-01, K-30, or an original Q....

Double bonus points if any of these cameras can manipulate the card settings via menus in the camera.

I don't have problems with my batteries in use. They all last about the same, Pentax or otherwise. However, what I do notice is they do not hold a charge in storage. I'll charge them up, and in a month or two use the camera and the battery is showing 75% on the meter. The aftermarket batteries are worse, showing 50% or less. Charge them up and they last for a whole day of usage. But they don't store well.

Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

So I've been reading up on these cameras, and the choice is between an MX-1, a Fujifilm X20, and a Fujifilm X30.

After scouring the DPReview site, there are very little differences in IQ between the two Fuji's and the MX-1. The Q7 is noticeably down in IQ comparatively. So it just becomes about features.

The X30 is the newest, released in 2014. It has a very nice EVF, wifi, tilting screen, hybrid AF (phase detection) and good battery life.
The X20 has the same sensor and lens and phase detection AF as the X30, with an overlay optical viewfinder (85%), no wifi, no tilting screen, and middling battery life.
The MX-1 has the Pentax menus I already know, but no solid advantage otherwise. It doesn't have phase detection AF, it doesn't have wifi, it doesn't have a viewfinder.

The more I think on it, the more I'm thinking WiFi would be a real advantage when I'm shooting photos from the motorcycle. I carry a netbook with me so I can blog and upload photos, but if I had the wifi in the camera I might be able to do that with my phone instead. Although, would that be possible to do with an Eye-Fi card? (I've never used one). The Fuji has a lot of added functionality in its built-in wifi, not just downloading files but manipulating the camera as well. So that's a big plus. It is however over my budget and also discontinued. D'oh. Used models are in the $400 range.

The X20 then might be an option, as used copies go for considerably less. Optical viewfinder and phase detection is a considerable advantage over the MX-1... but the MX-1 does appeal to me more visually. If I could get the MX at a good price I'd do it, otherwise I think I'll look for an X20.

All the while I'm still also looking for a Q7 or Q-S1.

Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

I did upgrade the firmware on my Q. Startup and AF times aren't the problems. The time to review an image after taking it is a huge issue with the original Q. The camera menus and review are not responsive for a few seconds after taking a photo in RAW or RAW+ modes.

The XZ2 was the Olympus I was thinking about. The small sensor kills it for me. The RX100 on the other hand doesn't have a very fast lens. It's abysmally slow when zoomed.

The Samsung EX2F and Panasonic LX7 use the teeny sensor in the MX1. They're also old and outdated, but they've got the fast zoom lenses.

The Fujifilm X20 has a larger sensor and an optical viewfinder, but it's still old. So far it's the best contender if I'm going to end up buying used. But I'd rather find something modern that fits the bill.

I'm not looking for any kind of removable lens camera. I want a point and shoot with a decent sensor, a fast lens, and a decent vintage look. So the olympus E-P5 is not something I'm interested in. The Sony is a step in the right direction, at least.

I'm not seeing anything in the ballpark on adorama, even when going out to $500. I guess that means none of the retro-inspired cameras available a few years ago got an upgrade. That stinks.

If it works for you that's fine. But I cannot manual focus on anything except an old Pentax ME Super. With my K30 it is simply not possible for me to manual focus. AF gets results every time. I almost wish I hadn't purchased the Samyang/Bower 85mm. I had hoped it'd be a great lens for shooting music shows with, but it's just impossible to focus in low light. It rarely sees use... I had hoped it would redeem itself. I had forgotton how bad it was to focus with, and after that brief shooting session I remember now why it lives at the back of the shelf.

Live View? HAH! It doesn't work in low light for SHIT. Out of almost 30 photos I took the with the 85mm, hand-held, at dusk the other day, 3 came out focused and only one was framed properly and usable. With AF it would focus correctly every time, I could brace the camera against my face for more stability, and the framing wouldn't wander because I'm holding the camera awkwardly to see the live view while also trying to focus the thing zoomed in with peaking... manual focus is a miserable experience even in good light, but in low light it's the worst possible thing.

Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

Hrm, okay. My assumption is that a modern camera would have a faster UI, faster burst rate, better ISO performance, and would be able to write faster (more images in burst mode), and also load up faster and preview Raw images faster and allow focus peaking in video mode. Basically, I want a fast camera. The original Q is sooooo slooooooooooooooooooooow even with the fastest memory card I could find.

Also, it's not possible to find an MX-1 new anymore. And Q-S1 prices are insane on the 'bay.

I remember there being an olympus with a fast zoom lens that came out at the same time as the MX1, and a few other similar fast cameras, but it was a long time ago, and I was hoping one or two of them had been upgraded.
