I own both, the 200mm fa is easy, the auto focusing is right on. the 200mm a is better than you think, with practice and careful focusing you can get tack sharp images.

what we are dealing with here, is the personal experiences of our forum members. our ratings are based on our equipment and skill level. a valid review would rrquire testing at least 5 of each model in a professional laboratory.

my results have been good with both the a and fa editions.

Pentax 645 Rear Converter 1.4X and 2X

this is a late reply to this post. my shooting is with a 645D, my lenses are the 200mm and 4oomm fa 645 lenses, and the 300mm 67 lens with an adapter. using the 1.4x tc with all the lenses, I've obtained sharp images. using the 2.0x tc I've obtained a lot of very good images. since not all my images need to be tack sharp, I've obtained a lot of good images stacking the 1.4 and 2.0 tc's together. being a " oh what the hell" kind of guy, I've even stacked a 1.4x tc with 2 2.0x tc's and still managed to get some usable images. with a good tc, the better the main lens, the fewer the faults that show up.
with my sony slt a-77 I mount a 200mm f2.8 apo G lens with their 2.0x tc and get tack sharp images all day long. the lens and tc were made by Minolta.

I find the 200mm fa f4 to be a great lens even with the 2x tc.

Finding wide angle lenses for the 645 d

I don't know where 24x36mm comes into the picture. I compering the equiv focal length of say a 100mm lens made for a 56x41.5 film area use on a 44x33 sensor area. the 645D could be considered the asp-c of 645 medium format.

I don't see your logic. the aps-c is smaller than full frame, so that when you use a full frame on a aps-c you get a 1.5 crop factor. ie a 100mm lens from afull frame would equiv 150mm on a aps-c camera.
the 6345D is smaller than the 645 film so you should get a 1.26 crop factor. a ventage 200mm 645 lens should equiv 250mm on the 645D camera.

let me state something I believe but you can dispute if you must.
with 75mm beng normal for 645 film cameras, and 55mm being normal for digital cameras, when you mount a 645 film lens on a 645D you get a crop factor. I received from a fellow member, 1.26 from 645 digital to 645 film and 1.62 from 645 digital to 67 film. if this be true then the 45mm would be the proper length for the 645D. it would equiv to 56mm. the 75mm would equiv to 93mm on the 645D. it would take a 15-17mm lens for real wide angle. the other option is for all the new 645D lenses being built forthe645D sensor size. when shooting from normal to telephoto it's all good. when shooting wide or extra wide you have a dilemma, my only solution has been a 35mm lens with a screw on aux lenses.

for my $0.02 , the 645Z looks as about as good as it gets. BUT I can think of a few things it needs.
1 up the sensor to 75 mp.
2 add vertical and horizontal sweep panorama.
3 add 5 or 7 image adjustable spread HDR.
Finish it off by addressing and correcting every bug discovered since it's introduction. call it the 645Z 2 XL

Is The Worlds Greatest Camera the 645D and Its CCD Sensor?

I own and consider the D a really good camera, even with low iso. in sun light I have no trouble shooting 1/2000 sec. from what I read I would consider the Z a near great camera when everything works right.

I spent 10k on the 645D and I shoot mostly jpeg. i'm not a " get all you can out of each image " person. there are times when I go with raw and use Picasa as my primary editor.

the worlds greatest camera has yet to be designed. the 645D is really good camera. I'm 80, so it will last my lifetime. the Z and other cameras do a lot of things better, but, for those things I rely on other models.

if light gathering was a big problem most would never take it out of the studio. take it out and use it like any other camera. we can up the iso and with the Z, a lot and still with good iq. 75% of my work is with a monopod the rest with tripod or hand held. let's K.I.S.

Equivalent focal length - 67 lens on 645

I asked the question of crop factors of the 645D and Z sensors to the 645 and 6x7 film lenses. the best answer I received on this site was,

645 film lens = 1.26 crop factor on the D or Z

6x7 film lens = 1.62 crop factor on the D or Z

I feel ok using this gage as a guide in buying and using lenses. I base my decision on the D sensor being smaller than the area of the 645 and 6x7 film camera. if it works when comparing aps-c to full frame, then it's gotta work with medium format.

I

why would you be comparing it 135mm when you have th 645 and 6x7 film areas to compare it to?

i'm still one of the lucky ones who have had no trouble with their 645D. it covers my skill level and shooting requirements. the 645Z looks impressive but i'm good with what I've got.

I am one who uses tc's all the time. I use both the 1.4 and the 2.0. with the 645 200mm,the 400mm,and the 6x7 300mm I've go some pretty good images, for me it's about matching good components. on a side note, shooting with my Sony a-900, using Minolta maxxum 200mm apo G and 80-200mm apo G plus their 1.4 and 2.0 tc's. I've got some "excellent" images. I hope there are others out there who have had good results with tc's.
