"Click" in between "C" and "MF" mode on focus selector? K-50

I just noticed a weird thing with my new K-50 - it seems to have a "click" or "stop" in between the bottom MF and middle C mode. It will only click into that in between position on the way from MF to C, not from C to MF.

In the "middle mode" the camera does register it being set to AFS-C

Hardly worth taking back to the shop but just thought I'd ask the question to see if anyone has experienced this anomaly? If you haven't noticed, maybe check yours?

For 1 x small/medium DSLR, and one or max two extra lenses and some filters etc. Tripod straps are a bonus. I have a bad back, originally I was thinking a sling bag but not sure now as I don't want to upset it.

Any suggestions?

Will buy from B&H

Hi all,

I will begin by saying that I've had nothing but great experiences with my Pentax K-x, but I am now at a point where I am looking to upgrade and I am considering video as a more important feature as we now have a dog and probably will have kids on the way soon too. The camera will be used to travel/camping/hiking, general pet/kid/family photography/video. Furthermore I am also looking at getting into panoramas much more heavily as I really like shooting them, and hopefully make a bit of money from selling canvases at the same time.

Must have:
  1. Must NOT be heavy! I really like the size and weight of my K-x, happy to go a bit bigger and a little heavier but not too much

  2. Cost effective/value I am looking at spending up to $1200 $1500 for the DSLR, one travel lens (18-135 WR in case of Pentax or 18-300), one 35mm prime for landscapes, cheap bag, filters etc. Will be bought from B&H Photo probably.

Very good to have:
  1. HDMI port!

  2. Weather sealing

  3. Video ability

  4. Swing out screen for low angle shots/video

  5. In-body IS as I have a bunch of MF lenses (like the Helios 44-2) which I am hoping to use more

Good to have:
  1. AA batteries for travel

  2. Accessories/lenses available in OS stores when travelling.. I found that no one stocked the Sigma 18-300 HSM OS in Pentax mount while in Canada, which was very frustrating (I desperately wanted a travel lens as I was sick of constantly changing lenses).

  3. Software for remote controlling for Astro photos (BackyardEOS) Canon comes out in front here

How does Pentax value currently compare with Canon or Nikon in the APS-C range of mid range DSLRs?

Hi all

I am planning on getting into landscape photography a little more and hopefully making a little bit of money whilst doing so, by selling canvases online. I should note first up that I have been stitching 7-8 images together and cropping - I do not intend on taking a single photo - unless it will somehow result in a better canvas.

I have semi-decided on a Pentax K-50 as a suitable upgrade from my current K-x. The upgrade is mainly because my K-x is getting on, and the AF hunting when there's not enough contrast is starting to bug me. I currently have the standard 18-55mm and 55-300mm kit lenses. My question is mainly around which lens/lenses to purchase along with the body - ideally I'd really like to have a 18-300mm just as a walkaround for holidays/family use, however it would also be nice to have the 18-55 WR lens (for the WR - although it wouldn't be used too often) and possibly even one prime, if it is deemed required for what I want to do (for the IQ).

I should also note that I have an array of older MF lenses, which is why I bought a Pentax in the first place (for the in-body IS), some of which are primes and can produce decent images. For a list, it may be best to just look at this thread that I started here on PentaxForums about 4 years ago.

Budget would probably be around $1200-$1500, using pricing from B & H Photo.
  • Would the IQ of the 18-55 WR or even the 18-300 suffice for large canvas prints (1.5m wide) - I.e. is a prime even required? Remember, these canvases will be sold.

  • If a prime is required, what focal length do you think would work best? I was obviously shooting with the 18-55mm mostly, but I did find that I wasn't shooting at 18mm all the time..

  • OT: Hardly worth a separate thread, would anyone consider that a Full Frame sensor would be a necessity for doing this sort of thing, even when just starting out?

Any other thoughts?

Not focusing on far away subjects

I have done more testing and I am convinced there is a problem.

I have had issues focusing on buildings only 200-400m away, on a clear day. Most of the time I still need to half depress the shutter and "look around" (runs small circles around the building) in order to get a focus lock. I do not recall having these issues before and I am sure I would if I was as it is blatantly obvious and really makes taking photos a PITA.

I guess the bottom line is, whether it's working as intended or not, it simply isn't working for me so I am going to need to upgrade either my body and lens or body only (assuming that the body is the issue here).

Thanks - I am still a bit concerned that something may not be working as intended, solely because I have never had (or at least noticed) this problem before.

Is there any "test" to check?

Thanks - is the auto focus sensor in the lens or body?

Would upgrading either fix the issue?

Hi all,

I have a Pentax K-x with a DA-L 18-55 and DA 55-300. Recently I have been having some issues with focusing with the 18-55 only. The issue usually happens when I try to take photos of landscapes, such as mountains. I have noticed it the most at 18mm.

I look through the viewfinder, hold the shutter half way down to obtain focus lock but the little light indicating a lock will just flash on and off. Sometimes I need to pan around for about 5 seconds, and I have missed a few shots because of this. In order to gain focus, I need to pan around a little bit of the same mountain in order to get a lock.

Focusing on closer objects (<20m at a guess) is no issue, focusing at longer focal lengths is no issue.

My 55-300 is working fine. Conditions are clear, and there are no reflections etc.

Is this normal? I don't recall this happening before (I don't use my camera all that much)

Older Pentax DA 18-250 vs newer Sigma 18-250 Macro

I am wondering how bad CA and distortion actually is on these types of lenses, and moreso, how easy it is to correct.

I then need to compare the process for the Sigma (PP/fiddling around for each photo) versus the Pentax. How well does the K-x deal with these issues - can I simply turn the corrections on and then forget about it completely? Or would more PP be required? I understand that the corrections only work with a Pentax lens.

If CA/distortion is very noticeable, PP is a pain, and the in-body correction handles everything for me, I'll probably get the Pentax. Otherwise the Sigma is probably the go.

Thanks guys

I am actually leaning towards the Pentax simply because I can then make use of the built-in CA/distortion correction functions on my K-x. Having to manually edit all my photos afterwards does not sound appealing at all.

Any other comments?

I have been looking for an "all in one" lens for travel however my attempts to find a Sigma with the Pentax mount have been in vain. Even finding the others mount types is proving to be difficult.

I have just located a second hand DA 18-250 from a nearby camera store for $295.

Any comments? Do I take it or hold out?

FWIW, I am traveling across Canada, currently in Vancouver and will be heading off into the Rockies in the next couple of days. Two weeks of travel left.

Update: I have found a Pentax 18-250 for sale (second hand) for $295 - how does this older lens (which I believe is the same as the Tamron 18-250) compare with the newer Sigma 18-250 macro?

Hi guys

I have done some research and it appear that this lens is probably my best bet for a "do it all" travel lens.

It appears that this lens is not available with OS included for the Pentax mount (see http://www.sigmaphoto.com/product/18-250mm-f35-63-dc-os-macro-hsm), however I have come across lots of posts from users that are using an OS version on a Pentax camera - lots of discussion on whether the in-body IS or the lens IS is better. I am pretty confused as to how people are sourcing OS lenses for their Pentax cameras - and, if it's possible, should I try to find an OS version or not bother?

I am currently travelling in Canada on a holiday and looking to buy the lens ASAP but I can't find the Pentax mount anywhere, I can only find Canon and Nikon. Any tips on where to shop? I am hoping to get one in Vancouver or in the Rockies somewhere.

It does, however I have the hack that allows you to disable DFS. So yes, that would have been the issue, but it's not ;)

Hi all,

This may or may not be an issue with my K-x, so bear with me.

I recently purchased a little iPhone app called "DSLR.Bot", some of you may have heard of it - it's pretty nifty. I bought it to allow Bulb (> 30s) exposures for astrophotography. You need an IR cable for it to work, I made my own as per the DSLR.Bot link to the guide on the Instructables website. The first exposure always works, as follows:

1. Start app, set exposure to 35s, delay to 5-7 seconds (more than enough for image processing/saving etc), repeat to 9999.
2. Press start - shutter opens as expected.
3. 35 seconds later...
4. Shutter closes as expected.
5. Delay timer kicks in
6. 5-7 seconds later...
7. Exposure timer starts again (as if to assume that another "open shutter" signal has been fired off) but...nothing...? The red light is flashing near the IR receiver to let me know that the camera IS ready for another IR input.

Any ideas? Thought this may be a setting in the K-x or something. The creator of the app seems to have gone AWOL, as it's a slightly dated app.

EDIT: Strangely enough, using Mode 1 (toggle shutter in Bulb) or Mode 2 (hold shutter in Bulb) has the same effect - First exposure is fine, second never works.

Ok, very strange. I've found that if I hold my iPhone running DSLR.Bot with my homemade IR cord near the IR port on the K-x, it makes the weird vibrating/buzzing noise. This will happen when the cord is a metre away or closer. I think it only happens when the shutter is open.

I'm doing 35 second exposures in Bulb mode with an IR remote that I built for long exposures. I have the K-x on my desk while doing so, so effectively a tripod. I thought that SR turns off automatically for longer exposures and/or when in Bulb mode?

EDIT: SR is OFF (it is greyed out with a red slash through it).

NOTE that this was happening with the lens cap on, in MF mode?

If I am doing a long exposure and the camera is not pointing upwards, I sometimes get a strange whirring/vibrating noise. The camera is noticeably vibrating in my hand. It will continually vibrate. I can only stop it by ending the exposure or point the camera straight up?

It just happened to me in Bulb mode.

I don't think it's the shake reduction?

If my camera is supposed to be doing this, how do I turn this off? No good for astrophotography.

I did think about that, but I think it might be a bit fiddly. Sounds simple, but I bet it's not (trying to get them exactly in synch every time).

That's a great idea but I'd need many wave files to have many different exposure lengths, again probably a bit fiddly.

Hi all,

I have made my self a cheap IR intervalometer however it won't send a second "pulse" to the camera to close it's shutter, once the exposure time is finished. It only sends one to open. Because of this, the longest exposure I can do is 30s (set on camera).

I am after the most cost effective solution to allow exposures over 30 seconds - what are my options?

Here is my Astrobin page if anyone is interested, I should be able to get much better images once I can expose over 30 seconds. All of shots were taken with standard lenses also (except the Moon shot).
