BTW....that's Rosie the Riveter..... She lives here in Sun City !
Every fourth of July she was at an event right across the road from me at the Rec center called Ring the Bell..... Don't know if she will still be there this year. Covid shut it down 2 years in a row. She is well known here.

I was quite kind. Even left good feedback just to be done with it. I just fixed the damn thing and moved on. I wanted another K-S2 for kayak adventures and now it's done.

Its a good camera with nice image quality.
Of course I know any K-S2 is a complete crapshoot with ABF. It's not the first time I rolled the dice and lost.

A couple weeks ago I bought a K-S2 off of eBay that was pristine condition. Buyer said it hadn't been used in a year. Buyer says never an issue with Dark images.
I get the camera and "Presto".... right off the bat it has random ABF !
This is my fourth K-S2 that has been afflicted. Sooooo.....I mumble and grumble and me pulls out a spare white solenoid from a box and repairs it !
Buyer never knows the difference and me is Happy Again ! Kinda anyway knowing ABF isn't going to happen again on this body.

I even tried getting a shipping company to pick it up in New England....
Nope...Goodwill was impossible to deal with. Told me I had to pick it up in person with ID.
Oh well...ldiots are idiots. I'm sure had it not been local pickup only it would certainly gone much much higher.

I paid $57 for mine from Amazon Renewed a little over a month ago. It came with a Mack 7 year warranty that I successfully registered and was listed as a Demo lens. Mine was new/mint in original box with all paper work.
It was listed as Good Condition but was indistinguishable from new.
I couldn't be more pleased.

My first choice would be the DA 20-40 Limited. You get the 21 , 35 , and the 40 range covered in one compact lens that's handy size for travel.
My second choice isn't a very popular one. It's the lowly DA 18-50 WR Retractable kit lens. The SMC or HD version doesn't matter. Compact and light. Less than $100 used.
I generally don't like big eastern city's , but Boston is one that I really like.

Ok....thanks for clarification. If the latest K-70's have the most recent solenoid , then maybe I will entertain the idea of getting one to replace my earlier beater K-S2 when and if it finally dies. I wish there was some data about the serial number range though , covering an approximate range of serial numbers with the gen three solenoid for the K-70.
Thanks for all your details and dedicated investigation and work.
One of these days I need to Pay-up here on PF so I can post some images of this K-S2'S solenoid from late in the lineage to verify that it is an actual gen 2 .

I took a slightly different path and decided to forego the Bone Crunchers and went straight for a simple increse of alchohol , and just before surgery a minor tranquilizer ! Did wonders for the anxiety and shakey hands , with the only noticeable side effect being a much improved mood , and perfect soldering !

You said the latest solenoid modification made the k-70 largely immune from ABF ? Im assuming you were referring the the second modification on the solenoid from Pentax ? What do you call it gen 2 ? Or did you replace it with a white one to avoid ABF ?
But that is the same solenoid that was present in the last batch of K-S2's such as I have ?
Or am I missing something here and the late model K-S2's have a different solenoid than the latest K-70 models that are made ?
Quite lost....:o

I also went the Fuji route with the X-T3. Got a screaming deal for a very nicely used one on Amazon. I'm really liking it almost the same as my KP.
However I have no issues at all using a M42 adapter on my KP or K-S2. Used the originals and aftermarket clones with no real issues.
Don't see any real problems other than sometimes my lens markings don't line up right at exact top when on the camera. No biggie.

I picked up a HD DA 10-17 for $199 from Amazon. However when I received it was missing the removable hood. Amazon customer service gave me a credit for $99 !
Lens looked new/unused in original box with warranty card intact.
I'm still quite happy to say the least.

I now have repaired one K30 , and just today my third K-S2.
Two were mine and two belonged to other people.
Photogem deserves all the THANKS on making all of this possible.
Brings new hope to people with one of these camera models that developed ABF and got a bum deal from Pentax.

Well.... my donor body arrived today and I promptly got right to the surgery.
All went very well as this was my fourth green solenoid swap. Right at the end I was pulling my hair out for about a half an hour trying to figure out why all of my exposures were coming out severely Overexposed Almost White. Just when I was about ready to give up I discovered that my exposure compensation somehow got locked in the process.
The *ist DL however didn't fare so well. I couldn't for the life of me find a diagram online on how to remove the solenoid from the flash properly without destroying everything. Unfortunately in the process I broke the damn thing and then got frustrated and just got right down to business and pulled both solenoids out. She did get even with me though and I got one nasty shock that I don't ever want to experience again !!!
On a side note I did find a small metal shaving stuck on the magnet of the solenoid. I have no idea what it came from but I don't think that it affected the performance but I'm not sure.
I also had a question about the magnet in the solenoid and whether or not it was position sensitive in other words does it have a positive and negative end?
Overall my agenda was nicely completed without any real issues. I do kind of feel bad though about the *ist DL but that's just the way things go and I really didn't need to be playing with yet another camera.
I need to take some pics of this solenoid for Photogem to take a look at , and I also have a spare white one out of all of this.;):rolleyes::D:lol:
On an interesting note....I swear my screw holding the solenoid was on the left ???
Too late to go back and double check now. I hope I got it in the right place.
