Thinking about getting a K-70

I'm now back from Italy and I couldn't be happier with the shots my K-70 produced. One thing I've learned is that for any sort of high contrast scene it's best to have exposure compensation on 1 or 2 thirds under, highlights can very easily blow out. The amount of shadow info that is captured in RAW is amazing but highlights can be lost without underexposing a bit.

I'm now on my trip to Italy and the K-70 continues to amaze me! This photo was shot on RAW auto, a bit of tweaking in Lightroom but the camera did an amazing job.

The first time I came across this overused term was in D&CCT in the 90's. The author seemed pretty proud of himself for inventing this term which, as far as I could see, simply described the out of focus area of a photo shot with a wide aperture. People like to complicate photography, I don't know why, but they do.

Regarding my two MX's. Both had light meter issues, as in the meter stopped working, I had one fixed and it broke again, in a way they did me a favour as it made me go to a handheld meter and I never used camera meters again. I had a rewind lever break on one and the shutter gave up when one was stored for a couple of years.

I had 2 MX's over the years and found them to be easily broken compared to the rock solid tank that the K1000 was.
In many ways the K1000 was the perfect film camera. Didn't need a battery, all manual, you had to figure it out and in the process, learn. Almost indestructible.
Surely, with all this interest in film, the time is approaching where some manufacturer sees a market opening.

K-70 newbie, exposure and flash question

Thanks so much Des and wadge22. Flash compensation was off. I've found that if I have a light modifier on the flash is when I have the problem. If I take it off I get pretty good exposure.

Just wondering if there is a way to tell the camera to underexpose all images by 1/3rd stop without manually doing it ever time I turn the camera on.

I recently purchased a K-70 as a replacement for my first digital SLR, a K-x.
I couldn't be happier, the image quality is amazing. What I really love about it is with tricky exposure, the camera usually gets it right but if it's not spot on, all sorts of magic can be preformed with the RAW image. I have tons of old Pentax lenses lying around including 7 67 lenses, I've only used DA lenses with this body but I will try a few old lenses on it soon. I doubt you'll regret buying a K-70.

If you just want to chuck a few 800 pixel wide images onto the web, in camera jpegs are fine. But if you want to extract the best image, RAW is the only way to go. It captures everything the sensor sees and you can do with it what you want. With a jpeg, you've already compressed the image and lost tons of info. Another RAW advantage, if you have your camera on some weird setting like tungsten when you are shooting daylight, if you are in RAW, no problem, all the info is there. Cards are cheap, why wouldn't you shoot in RAW?

Upgrade a K-x to a K70?

The difference between the K-70 and the K-x really is night and day. I was putting the camera through all sorts of ad hoc tests. One shot I took was purposely severely underexposed. I opened it in Camera Raw, made an exposure and shadow adjustment and got a really decent image. That image would have been dead on the K-x. Thanks again to all that encouraged me to upgrade. The K-70 is amazing!

I've had the 18-135 for a week now and am pretty happy with it. Attached is a pic I took at the weekend, it was in very poor light but the combo of my new K-70 and the 18-135 turned out some decent results.
Just one question, the zoom seems quite loose, if I have it out at 135 and tilt the camera towards the sky the zoom collapse back to 18, is this normal for this lens?

Just an update. The flash and camera seem to like each other when I put the camera on full AUTO. The problem seems to occur in AE mode.

I just got a K70 and have two questions.

On any auto mode the highlights seem to be a bit hot.I realise that I can crank back the exposure compensation but doing that 2/3 stop doesn't seem to help. Is this just how this camera is or is there a setting I can use to stop the problem? The area near the doorway on the right measures 250 with the Photoshop eyedropper tool.

The on camera flash works very well but I also have a METZ 44AF-1 Pentax dedicated digital flash, in TTL it doesn't work very well, it overexposes quite a lot in any mode. This flash worked superbly on my old K-x. The ebook and camera manual hardly say anything about using off camera flashes.

Upgrade a K-x to a K70?

I did buy the ebook, very good and comprehensive although it doesn't talk about flash much.

My METZ flash (44AF-1) is Pentax compatible It is stamped "for Pen" on the body and worked beautifully with my K-x. I tried it today on my K70 and the results were poor. I tried it on full auto and on Av. It overexposed badly. The on camera flash however performed really well and I'm very happy with the results.

The test shots I took today on my new K70 I am VERY happy with. The light was a milky light overcast and the K70 handled it well. I alternated between AUTO and Av, I doubt I could get better exposures with a hand held meter. With the 18-35 the auto focus is so fast and accurate.
I do think that the K-x was a better camera ergonomically but I think I'll quickly get used to the layout on the K70.

I don't take many people photos these days but I liked this shot taken on a hike on a abandoned railway in Australia. Pentax 67, 165mm lens, Tri X developed in D 23.
I don't know why the image is appearing twice.

Got my K-70 today. I just have two quick questions that I can't find answers to in the manual.
Can I turn shake reduction on and off quickly without going through the menus?
Unlike my old K-x it doesn't have a flash setting on the dial. If I use my METZ (with a Pentax module) flash, what setting do I use? I also have Elinchrom monolights with a wireless trigger, I guess I just put the trigger in the hot shoe but what setting on the camera doing I use?

My 18-135 arrived today. Only had time to take a few quick tests shots, at f8 I'm pretty happy. I'll do a full test at all the apertures in a few days to find its optimum aperture. One thing I noticed is how fast and quiet the autofocus is compared to my plastic mount 18-55 DAL.
Once again, thanks to all for your replies.

Thanks to everyone for your super helpful replies. A lot of things to consider regarding older top of the line cameras versus a new K 70. This camera will come with me on what may be my last trip to Europe. I will be doing the usual landscape, architectural photos but I also like to do low light photos for which I will be bringing some sort of camera support. The K-x doesn't seem to be great at low light so the K70 sounds like a big improvement. I take all of my images in RAW. Today the lens I will take arrived, a 18-135 DA, first pics on the K-x on f8 look great. I take it from the comments that the K70 will do much better in low light conditions than my K-x, is that correct?
Once again, thank you so much for your replies.

How Pentax Ruined Digital Photography...

It could be said that digital ruined photography. Not many people know the joys of developing film and then printing it, taking a lifetime to master both, (well actually you never "Master" it) you just keep learning. Look, I realise that digital is incredibly convenient but there is something about the "click and you have an image" that sort of divorces you from the whole process. I still love the "Clunk" of my Pentax 67 shutter and I still love loading a roll of 120 film onto a reel and developing it. It's like you have to work to make the image. Digital photographers seem to blast away (with auto bracketing) and take 1000s of images. with film you slow down and learn to take a few good ones and then work your magic in the darkroom. I actually feel a little sorry for people that have never "made" a photo in the darkroom.

Upgrade a K-x to a K70?

Hi, I'm an old film camera guy, my main camera is a Pentax 67. I'm not up with digital cameras at all. I've had a Pentax K-x that I purchased about 10 years ago which I'm happy with but was wondering if the time has come to upgrade to something newer. Would I see much difference between a K-x and a K70? I notice that the K70 has twice the megapixels of the K-x. I assume that the base model Pentax has come a long way in 10 years but want to hear from some digital camera experts as to whether it would be worth my while upgrading or if I'd get pretty much the same images.

I've now ordered a 18 - 135 lens and that will be the one I take overseas.

I probably should start a new thread but I'm thinking about upgrading my 10 year old K-x to a K70. The K70 has about twice the MegaPixels than the K-x. Would this make a demonstrable difference or is it not worth upgrading the K-x? I do like the size and handling of the K-x. It looks like the K70 is quite a bit bigger.

Using a Metz Pentax flash at a museum

Thanks for all your helpful replies. A flash is a bad idea. I had hoped to not carry a tripod but I'm an old film photographer and all my tripods are built like tanks and weigh a ton. Having a look around there are some new generation tripods which are quite light and small to carry. The Manfrotto BeFree looks really good. I'm often amazed at how good the shake reduction feature is on my M-x but as some posters have said, I should stay on 100-200 ISO. Thanks again for all your replies.

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't know about the 18-135mm lens. As some have pointed out, wider is better in narrow European streets. It is selling for very low prices from the camera guys from Japan on eBay. I'm an old film photographer so excuse my ignorance but what is a IQ when referring to lenses?
