Question Buying gear from B&H through forum links - for non-Pentax gear?

I've remembered to purchase my last couple of large Pentax gear purchases (K-1 Mark II, and the 3 HD Pentax-FA Limited lenses) by first clicking on the link to the vendors here on the forum, so the forum can get some credit for the purchases. However, will the forum still get credit if I use those links to buy non-Pentax gear? I'm thinking of buying a 30mm F3.5 Macro OSS lens for my Sony A6000. Thanks - Richard.

I bought that PT-2D in the box, with the manual, on ebay! Haven't tried it yet. It is the second PT-2D I own, the other came with my DX-8R macro ring flash. I can attest that the TTL function works great with the DX-8R and t e PT-2D on my Pentax 645n, using the Pentax-A 645 120 macro lens. The Auto mode (not the TTL mode) on the flash/sensor combo works fine on newer Pentax DSLRs (I've tried it on my K-70, haven't tried it yet on the K-1 Mark II).

Is the K-1(II) compatible with AF-280T flash?

OK, being an engineer, I just had to know the trigger voltage on my Pentax Autorobo. While I was at it, I measured the trigger voltage on several others that I have. I used relatively fresh batteries (each alkaline AA cell was 1.48V +/- 0.02V), and I fired each flash using the "test" button (or shorted the PC terminal) three times before measuring the voltage, to form the capacitor, and set them on full output, auto mode (though I doubt that would change the trigger voltage, but we want to control variables). I used a Craftsman AutoRanging Digital Multimeter Model 82175. I give the date of first release for each Pentax model, as far as I know it (from copyright dates on manuals).

Pentax flashes:
1973 Autorobo 21 V
1983 AF200T 2.65 V
1986 AF160sa 2.6 V
1988 AF280T 2.65 V
2003 AF360FGZ 3.1 V

Modern, Pentax-compatible flashes:
Metz 26AF-2 4.57 V
Godox TT350P 3.08 V

So, I think you are pretty safe using the Pentax AFxxx flashes on any camera, including digital, and of course the modern third-party flashes made for P-TTL are fine. The Autorobo has a low trigger voltage for flashes of that era (21 volts), but that voltage is about 8X higher than the later Pentax AF flashes. The 21V of the Autorobo might be safe on a DSLR (if they comply with the ISO standard of up to 24V), but personally I'm not going to risk my $2000+ K-1M2 on that assumption, especially as I have many other auto thyristor flashes I can use that are better and more compact. My Autorobo is for when I want to be period correct for my Spotmatic or K1000, just for fun.

Some old non-Pentax flashes below. No years here, but I'll look them all up later. My Vivitar Auto 252 (non-thyristor) I've had since the mid 1980s, and it is a great little flash, though not thyristor. Where I list the voltage with a +, that means it was slowly rising as I took the measurement. I think some of the old circuitry doesn't have much control. As you can see, most of these are not for modern cameras.
Vivitar 102 180+ V
Vivitar Auto 252 179+ V
Vivitar Auto Thyristor 225 190+ V
Sunpak Auto 140 180+ V
Sunpak Auto 322 170+ V
Sunpak Auto 322S 170+ V
Sunpak Auto DX-8R 2.72 V (good thing it is low, because I've used this ring flash on my K-70 already. Great little flash. I used it in Pentax TTL mode on my 645n, works great.)
Morris Maxi Slave 11.5 V (probably could use this on a DSLR, but why bother. It is meant for slave operation, but can use a sync cord as a manual flash).

Just a side note: When I've used the Autorobo, it seems to recycle very fast when flash distances are short. I wonder if it has thyristor circuitry? The battery life given in the manual (150 flashes in manual, approx. 2000 flashes in auto) to me implies that it uses some type of power saving circuit like a thyristor.

That's it! - Richard.

Is the K-1(II) compatible with AF-280T flash?

This link gives the most pertinent information I've found on this topic. The answer is that all legacy Pentax flash units (I'd leave the Autorobo for the moment out of this) are safe for Pentax DSLRs (see the comments section). We don't know for sure the maximum safe trigger voltage on the DSLRs, but I suspect they are compliant with the ISO standard so should be good up to 24V, but, for me, I wouldn't just go by that assumption. For me, I would go by the assumption that I can use any of the Pentax AF-XX flashes on my K-1M2, since we know that Pentax literature and tech support have indicated you can do so. I've used the AF160SA in auto mode quite successfully on my K-1M2, in auto mode.

Is the K-1(II) compatible with AF-280T flash?

It was my understanding that all of the film era Pentax flashes had low enough trigger voltages so that they are safe for Pentax DSLRs. Now, the TTL feature of the AF280T will not work on the K-1M2 DSLR, since the DSLR uses P-TTL (with a preflash) and the AF280T doesn't support that. However, you can use the AF280T in auto mode (using the sensor built into the flash unit) or use the flash on manual.

Added comment: I'm not sure about the earliest Pentax flashes, like the Autorobo. If anyone is curious about that one, I can measure the trigger voltage on mine and let you know. But hardly anyone has an Autorobo.

First good prime to get? For K-1M2, K-70, and also film

Thanks. My question earlier was prompted by a desire to see if I could find any advertisements from the late '90s to early 2000s that featured the limited lenses. I was curious to see what cameras were suggested for use with the Limited lenses. But, thanks for pointing out the limited camera edition with the lens.

On extension tubes - yes, I think that would definitely be something to try. Unfortunately, right now I don't have any k-mount extension tubes. I've used extension tubes with my M42 lenses (I have a cheap set of tubes I bought in the 1970s for that), but I've never had any for k-mount. I guess I'll just have to get a set!

Should I get the 28-105 kit lens for the K-1 Mark II?

Now that I've had the K-1M2 and the 28-105 for a while, I'm quite glad I was convinced (by discussion in this thread) to get the 28-105 when I purchased the camera (and the grip too). The lens is indeed as good and as useful as people suggested, and I use it most of the time on my K-1M2, just as I've used the 18-135 on my K-70. Of course, I got the three FA Limited lenses recently, so for the past week or so I've had only them on my K-1M2 and the K-70.

I've not used the 24-90 much. I'm going to give it a good trial on the K-1M2 as well.

Thanks for this comment. I'm going to check out those other two lenses too. I have that Sigma -y II MF 21-35mm F/3.5-4.2, which I intended for my wide angle zoom on the K-1, but it would be nice to have AF. I have two Tamron AF lenses, an 80-210 and a 70-300, which are OK for a longer zoom, though they do have a bit of CA.

Note: I have this lens listed on Ebay as well. I've been lowering the starting bid price week to week as it was not selling, and I also offered a 14 day return. I finally got one bid, $59, so I know it will sell by the time the auction closes in 3 days. If you are interested in this lens, let me know ASAP, otherwise it will sell by Tuesday on ebay. Obviously I'll consider anything more than $59. Thanks.

I'll let you know. I have the M 1.4 and 1.7, and the A 1.4 and 2.0 50mm lenses as well. Actually, on a MF camera like the K1000 I'm more likely to use one of those MF lenses, but it will be interesting to try out the Limited lenses on a K1000 or Super Program as well. Maybe for occasional use for a different lens character.

Certainly those DA Limited lenses are very nice, and probably a better overall approach if your primary application is the APS-C camera. What appealed to me on the FA Limited line was that they would work well for my K-1 Mark II and the film cameras as well. The fact that tI could use them on the K-70 was more of a bonus.
Some day I'd like to get the DA 15 limited, for just the K-70.

MZ-S problem

My MZ-S works fine in all modes with old and new lenses, so I don't think this is a problem with the model features. Do you have any Pentax-A series lenses to try? You can see if they work when set to A mode, they are a bit less complicated than the later autofocus lenses, but still have the automatic aperture. I was thinking that the camera was not picking up that the lens had an automatic setting (hence the question about the contacts), so it was operating as-if the lens were a manual aperture lens. In that case the aperture would probably default to fully stopped down on the lens side.

Did you try cleaning the contacts on the camera mount? Maybe the camera isn't communicating correctly with the lens.

I'm using the V1.05 firmware currently, and I guess the camera is recognizing the lens properly. The right lens codes are being saved to the jpeg files so they show up as the HD versions in Lightroom.

I'm going to do the firmware upgrade and see if I notice any difference. I was meaning to upgrade anyway, but this gives me an excuse to do so.

Thanks for your comment. However, this is the notation on the Ricoh/Pentax website for the K-1 Mark II firmware updates:

Changes to V1.20
Optimized focus operation for new lenses HD PENTAX-FA 31 mm F1.8 Limited, HD PENTAX-FA 43 mm F1.9 Limited, HD PENTAX-FA 77 mm F1.8 Limited lenses and smc PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8AL limited, smc PENTAX-FA 43mm F1.9AL limited and smc PENTAX-FA 77mm F1.8AL limited lenses.

So, it seems that they are saying that the V1.20 firmware update was necessary to improve focus for my three new Limited lenses. My camera right now is operating with the firmware that came on it new from the factory, V1.05.

Thanks - Richard.

Tested the three lenses today on the K-1M2, all seem to work well. A couple seemed to miss focus a little bit, I might try that firmware update that I read about (my camera is still on firmware 1.05, and the 1.20 update was for focusing on the HD limited lenses). Some observations so far: I didn't realize that the 31mm could focus that closely, it is almost like a macro lens. And the 77mm seems a good focal length for kittens.
