The Problem with Pentax LX Cameras

No , somewhere along the line I recently stumbled across a Mamiya RB67 Professional with a 127mm lens and have decided to play with it for a bit. Learning how to operate it has been a challenge, as all the Youtubes and IB's are for the RB67 Pro S; this is the first (Ca. 1970) model and several changes occurred in 1974 with the Pro S. This critter will keep me from hunting for LX stuff for a while. I'll probably only use it for landscapes. First challenge is to replace the light seals, which is a DIY challenge. Don't know of an Eric Henderson for the RB's.

Non-Pentax Repair Question about which Glue to use on a Camera Part

This is a really trivial matter, but thought I'd seek some advice.

I have a 50 year old Yashica 4X4 LM twin lens reflex that was a gift to my father that he never used. I ended up getting it back when he passed. I recently started back into film with a K1000 and now an LX (for which I keep buying accessories, duh). Anyhow, decided to use the Yashica as B&H has 127 film available. Started to check out the Yashica and the cover on the shutter speed setting dial, which is there only for appearance, dropped off. It is metal as is the dial; apparently the glue holding it on dried up. The residue seems to be some light tan glue.

I can just put a drop of JB weld on it, but I was wondering if there is anything better? BTW - The light meter still functions and matches my Gossen's readings.

My LX viewfinder collection continues to grow. Just got an FE-1 Waist Level Magnifier from fleaybay. Am beginning to run out of LX accessories to get. Good thing I did not decide to collect Leica F stuff. Life is good. Will take a bunch of pics on Tuesday at a Cowboy Action Shoot. Will post a few in a couple of weeks.

It can be cured by deciding to collect specific firearms such as Colt SSA"s, original Winchester's, etc. The cost and the researching of each piece will slow a person down. If that does not work, start pricing custom trap shotguns aka Krieghoff K80's; ouch! Another fun hobby is watch collecting. Unless you get into exotic Leica stuff, the Pentax LBA is a minor bump in the wallet.

Eric is reasonably priced, does quick turnaround, and produces excellent work. I understand he is training his replacement; good for him.

I got a BGN K1000 from KEH off of fleabay. It was clearly unusable due to a de-silvered prism. Eric did a CLA and a prism replacement for $70, which is what I paid for the camera w/shipping. Never again from KEH.

The Problem with Pentax LX Cameras

I just added a Winder LX to the collection. Got it on Fleabay in excellent condition. Only issue is that it has almost too many abilities plus a 16 page instruction manual to explain things. Good grief; they engineered in as many features as they possibly could, using a total of four buttons and dials. It certainly seems well made, but remembering its processing sequence seems to be a PIA. Probably will become a safe queen.

TomB - I briefly recently looked at Leica early SLR's, but could never figure out their progression. The 2 cam, 3 cam etc., business confused me more than I ever cared to research. I do admit Leica's are mechanical wonders and I tinkered with the idea of getting a Leicaflex, but decided to go to Pentax for playing with film stuff; basically on the cheap. In the dim distant past I used Nikons, but they are long gone and their finders were somewhat of a PIA from a battery standpoint. The Pentax line progression is simple to me.

Anyhow, thanks for the suggestion.

There are too many add-on's/upgrades still available. I recently got one that had an Eric CLA in late 2015. Then got a B grip from KEH, just got an Action Finder setup from Fleabay. Now have a 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.7, and a 105mm 2.8 to go along with it. Just realized I now have the state-of-the art Pentax pro kit ca. 1980. The good thing is that it's a lot cheaper than going the classic Leica route, which I was headed on until realizing that I preferred SLR viewfinders over classic viewfinders. This also saved me a few thousand $ from getting a similar Leica M-3 setup. Additionally, I have a backup camera in a decent K1000. This saves another thousand over a backup for the Leica.

My only issue is that different LX accessories keep popping up on Fleabay, and they are hard for me to resist. Think I'll stop upgrading when my LX total out-of-pocket costs (not counting lenses) reaches the grand sum of $500.

Anyone else having this type of equipment acquisition issues?

Who/Where to Process B&W Film?

I closed my darkroom down in 1984 when I moved to a new house. Really don't have any interest in fiddling with chemicals for a roll or so a month. Appreciate the comments. Also, I'm pushing 80, so don't know how long I will be able to keep on shooting.

Disconnekt - That's an interesting site. However, there is nothing near me (no sites in West, By gawd, VA).

I settled on The Darkroom in LA. Have had them process a couple of rolls of Iliford HP5 Plus 400 and they came out fine. Sent the last roll on 8/9 and got the results today (8/16). They upload the pics and also mail back a CD and the negs. A roll of 36 with a medium scan costs $21 including shipping both ways. I am very pleased with the results. Tried to post a pic, but this site has a 1MB max and these are about 5MB. Too lazy to fiddle with it.

Question on K-S2 lens

I had one and finally sold it as I also had an 18-135. Sort of sorry I let it go as it was very light and balanced well on the K-S2; the 18-135 make the camera front heavy. It helped to lightly pull on the front while pushing the button and twisting. Became second nature after a while. My current standard lens is a 40 XS which seems as heavy as a lens cap.

Issue with newly aquired Pentax K1000 or beginners mistake?

My recommendation is to send it to Eric and then life will be good with your K1000. He recently did a K1000 CLA and a prism replacement for me = $70. Just got a roll of B&W processed and digitized; came out fine. I'll print them tomorrow. Have forgotten that part of the lure of film is the wait for the results. No instant gratification. Sort of like Christmas when you were a kid.

I had an old 28mm M lens with the same issue and sent it to Eric; he found some sand in it and was fixed in a week. Not an expensive repair.

I forgot that I split my processing between two Walgreens. One returned the roll as their lab kicked it back. The second got prints and negs back after 3 weeks. The issue is I wanted digital files. The prints came out very flat, with crappy contrast. The returned roll is at CVS. I'll see how it comes out. Meanwhile, I'll try my K1000 and some custom labs as I really want decent digital files.

I just bought an LX from this forum. It's in the mail. I could not resist it as it was CLA'd by Erick 12/14. Will most likely hang onto the K1000 as I'd take a loss selling it, plus it's a nice machine.

I recently picked it up from Fleabay, was from KEH. The viewfinder was full of fungi; never was mentioned in the listing! Anyhow, sent it to Eric. For $70 he did a prism replacement, CLA, and shipped it back. It looks and handles like new. Took 3 weeks. The guy is a master. I can now retire my other film camera (Nikon 6006) and really go old-time retro. In the meantime, I picked up a couple of A lenses that I can use on my K-S2 if I decide to try them.

Who/Where to Process B&W Film?

I recently decided to get back into film in order to try something different and retro. As background, I had a B&W darkroom until moving in the early 1980's, when I sold it and went to color film and slides. My B&W was primarily country band 8X10 photos. After that was just usual family, hobby and travel snapshots. Went to digital in about 2000. Recently picked up a K1000 and a few lenses; the camera is at Erick's getting an overhaul due to a bad prism (fleabay from KEH, another story). Found I still had a decent lightmeter. I decided to really go back to basics.

To give you an Idea of my era in photography, my first 35mm was a Leica IIIf Red Dial w/50mm Elmar, which were still in production at the time. Before that was a Voightlander 120 folder.

Anyhow dug out an old Nikon 6006, got a battery and a bunch of Ilford 400 and shot a couple of rolls. Took them to Walgreens several weeks ago. Just got a call that they don't process B&W; duh! Checked with CVS and it seems like they handle B&W via a central site. Wondering if anyone has experience with them or with Walmart who also seems to do B&W?

I don't care about negatives or prints as I can digitally deal with the latter. Not interested in fine art, just mostly snapshots to be shared online and handed around. Don't want to process and scan negatives myself.

Just looking for advice on who to use for this simple stuff. Ideas appreciated.
