Anyone got any experience with the no-name 60mm 2:1 manual focus off ebay?

This. Take a close look at the lens in the ebay listing. The front of the lens is misclocked 90 degrees. The first and third pics are clear and unambiguous.

Pentax ME repair

Have you considered the idea of buying another camera instead? It will almost certainly be faster and less expensive than a repair and there are millions of used film cameras out there to choose from.

Upgrading from K1000

Here is my suggestion: ZX-L or similar.

Every lens and every flash just work. The main complaint is that the batteries aren't cheap but nothing in the film world is free. I have the battery grip mostly because my hands are large.

My other film cameras are an MX which I really like for all the reasons mentioned above, an LX which I find somewhat pretentious, and a K2DMD with the ASA ring issue that Eric couldn't fix.

My SMC Pentax-FA 100mm F2.8 Macro lives on my K-5. It is quite a bit more expensive but it works at both near and long distances. YMMV.
Sometimes it hunts for AF but if I get it close manually then it works.

To add something.
If what you want is easy inexpensive full frame then this might be what you want. Mine has the battery grip which reduces the battery cost and makes it fit better in my hand.
The other film cameras I'm keeping are the K2DMD, the MX, and the LX system.
As others are pointing out in this thread some cameras are totally manual and some can be more automatic. I sold my K1000 this month and the buyer didn't even recognize the bag of bits and pieces.

Concur: I have the ZX-L version of your MZ-6. It is one of only a few film cameras I'm keeping when I move next month. Works with any Pentax flash and lens.

I got lucky.
Attracted the right buyer at an advertised estate sale.
Most of the tripods also got sold.

and ten low end film Pentax cameras along with every scrap of M42 including a broken fotosniper.
I'm reasonably certain that I enjoyed buying, using, and owning them.
The LX complete set did not sell. The K20D did.
Who knew?

Two cheap chargers, four rechargeable CRV-3s, and an old leatherette film canister holder.
Better than NiMH and cheaper than disposables. I have an *istD rather than an *istDS but the parent commenter believes that CRV-3s fit in both.

Twice.
Second time K-5.
I'm on the tick tock plan. And skipping some beats.
K-1 is on my list.

Think about a K-5

Tempting but I'm not wealthy.
I plan to buy a K-1 the month after the K-2 is available for sale.
My K-5 is still working well for me.

I still carry a K-5.
Most of my lenses are FF and I plan to buy a K-1 about six months after the K-1a or whatever it will be named is proven competent.

If he is familiar with a Canon PowerShot camera . . .
Buy him another one. No sin there. I own two and like them. . .
I would prefer, if you are generous, a K-1
Edit: I would like to receive a K-1 Not that your father want's what I want.

No. That is not true. I wear plastic lenses except when I want to see anything farther away than the dashboard of the car I am driving.

You can use almost anything. A small keyring works.
The leather bit only protects the camera finish.

If you really want the triangular bit bid on almost any Pentax film camera on Ebay.

Yes but it won't help much.
Particularly at the longer end.
An inexpensive flimsy fix would be taping black paper around the end.
I'm always on the prowl for better hoods.
aoeu

On the otherhand No. Is there a 45-85 zoom?

Edit again: Where is the 80-160mm lens you are talking about?
