The L glass is very good and CPS is amazing and that's why you pay a premium. Third party lens manufacturers are not going to provide the same level of service.

They have a great lens selection for wildlife. 1200mm F8, 800 F5.6, 600 F4, 400 F2.8 and 100-500 4.5-7.1 all are L glass. Then they have the 800 and 600 F11 and the 100-400 5.6-8 lenses that are all more affordable options plus the 1.4 and 2X teleconverters.

I completely agree with any brand that wants to keep their lens mount closed off to 3rd party lenses. Right now Canon and Nikon developed new mounts that they put a lot of money into and they want to earn that money back. Canon developed new features in the bodies and the lenses to get the best out of them working together, even some of the old EF lenses don't work as good as a new RF lenses.

The people who aren't going to move to an RF or Z mount body because no 3rd partly lenses aren't the customers Canon and Nikon are probably too concerned with anyway. They will buy a camera maybe every few years and that's it, they want customers who will buy a camera and then spend money building up a lens collection from them that's how they make their money and that's the main concern for every business.

People who want to use Sigma lenses can always buy a Sigma camera body they don't need to buy a Canon or Nikon.

Well that will free up third party lens manufacturers to make K mount lenses.

The RF lens line up is pretty good right now and it will just continue to grow. They have a good selection of cheap lenses and a good selection of really expensive lenses but you will never satisfy everyone.

That's interesting. I've never tried any of the enlarging software but have watched a couple videos on them and have never seen anyone do it that way, it would be interesting to see the result difference.

The M mount is like Pentax 645 right now. They work great but neither Canon or Pentax have done anything with them for years.

The M has been one of the best selling mirrorless mounts for years, I guess because of the size of them. I can’t see Canon discontinuing it anytime soon.

You could also swap the 16 and 35 for the 600 F11 if you tend to use more telephoto lenses.

I have the 50 1.8 and have only used it a couple times but I've been happy with it. I mainly do wildlife so don't really need a 50 much so buying the 50 1.2 was out of the question for me but for $200 the 1.8 is a perfect little lens to have in the bag just in case.

I thought about the 16mm 2.8 but I already have the 24-105 F4 L and I don't think I've ever used it on the short end, I just don't have the eye for wide angle photography. I've read it relies heavily on in camera corrections but for the price it seems to be pretty good.

Most of all the new features in cameras can also be turned off, except for the EVF in a mirrorless and noise reduction that some models do.

One of the things I enjoyed most about the 645Z was taking my time and shooting in complete manual mode down to the white balance and focusing.

I don't think WR is much of an issue for most people. I think a lot of the people in the market for an R7 just won't go out shooting when the weather is bad and the ones that will go out probably have EF or RF L lenses.

When I had my 1DX II and EF 600 F4 that has great weather sealing I still put a Lenscoat rain coat on the combo and will use it on my RF gear now. I think it was about $120 and it goes on quick and doesn't interfere with using the camera at all and just adds that reassurance that my gear is protected. For people using smaller lenses you can get ones a lot cheaper and not have to worry about it.

Well your description of double back button focus is a little off but close. You can customize a lot of the buttons to do whatever you want so a lot of wildlife shooters will have the rear AF button set for single point and then have the * button set to animal eye AF or reversed depending on what you prefer. If say a bird is in a busy scene and it doesn't see the eye you can just use single point and move the joystick to get the eye and then try eye AF to track if needed.

Some guys even use triple back button focus where on the third they will have a zone set up. I use my depth of field button to switch between single and zone it works better for me that way.

Different cameras for different jobs. Taking a 8x10 large format camera to a rivers edge trying to get a shot of a bald eagle or osprey fishing is just going to end in disappointment for you. Now taking a camera with good tracking and 15 or 30 fps could still end in disappointment but you will have a better chance of getting the shot.

Which camera has good AF tracking?

The 90D does not have a very good autofocus system and I'm pretty sure it has a slow fps also. It was designed and marketed as a general purpose body for people chasing megapixel count. The D500 was made to be a APSC wildlife sport shooter body that has a good autofocus and frame rate.

I wouldn't recommend the 90D, if you are sticking with a DSLR the Nikon D500 is the one you want if you if you are looking at mirrorless right now the R7 at it's price point is hard to beat but unless you pre ordered this morning you will probably have to wait a while to get one.

If I was you I would watch a few videos of the R5 and R6 by wildlife shooters on Youtube, the R7 is going to use the same system just with a smaller sensor.

The firmware of the R7 is probably going to be similar to what the R5 1.5.2 is and it is very good. The 1.5 was a train wreck for me so I went back to 1.4 and waited until 1.5.2 was out to upgrade again after seeing nobody had issues. they released 1.5.1 pretty quick after the problems were found but I didn't take a chance on that one.

I don't think you will find a camera with the level of performance in autofocus and FPS as the R7 for so little a price.

Someone can get the same autofocus capability and high frame rate of a R3 R5 and not have to pay the price of those bodies. I don't think anything else on the market right now has that level of autofocus for only $1500.

If you shoot wildlife Canons animal eye AF is amazing and changes the way you can shoot and compose images. It's not 100% but it is really close and after you learn how to use double back button focus between animal eye AF and single point it's great, I can never imagine shooting without it.

The R7 is the replacement for the 7D II that was very popular with wildlife shooters who didn't want to or couldn't afford a 1DX II body. Now they will be able to get an R7 that will outperform a 1DXII in autofocus and frames per second for a bargain price. Sure it doesn't have the build quality but most people don't need that for weekend shooting and vacations.

I'm shooting two R5's now and I'm not interested in the R7 I'm waiting for the R1 and then I'll trade a R5 in but I know lots of people have been waiting for the R7 and I'm sure Canon will have a hard time fulfilling demand. I wouldn't be surprised to hear people ordering now not getting them until Christmas, especially all the people who order from B&H instead of small local shops.

The 90D has poor autofocus capabilities, at least for a Canon and also limited focus points. The R7 has the same autofocus system as the R3,5,6 thatís amazing and covers the entire frame so it will be a big performance upgrade.

For birders and wildlife shooters on a budget the R7 and the 100-500 will be a nice setup. Will be interesting to see some test with the R7 and the cheaper non L RF glass to see how they work with that high of pixel density. When the 90D came out lots of people complained about images when using older and cheaper lenses.

The Canon APSC mirrorless line now is the M mount and that is a dead system, they are supposedly announcing the RF crop bodies Tuesday.

I would love to see a video of how this performs, I don't think it is anywhere as good as the Canon and Sony otherwise they would've made a bigger deal about it instead of pushing the new OVF.

I just looked at a couple videos on YouTube with the K3 III eye AF, not sure I would call it that it's bad.

The K1 is a great camera but its FPS and auto focus are not the best for small quick moving birds, your FA 300 probably doesn't have the fastest motors in it either.

The D500 and a Tamron or Sigma 150-600 will be a huge increase in performance for you but if you think you will get more series with wildlife I would highly suggest looking into a mirrorless body that has animal eye AF, if you are going to spend money better to do it once.

I don't know about the Nikon FTZ adaptor but reviews say it's just as good as Canons and Canons EF to RF works perfectly and when I had EF glass it worked better on the RF bodies then on the EF bodies. So you could still get a Tamron with a DSLR mount and use it on a mirrorless body and not have to spend as much for a native mount lens.

If you want test charts and numbers that donít really tell you much about a lens look at DXO Mark. They put a lot of numbers up but they donít really tell you how a lens will perform.

The 90D does require very good lenses from what I've seen, with the 32mp APSC sensor it really shows flaws in older and poorer quality lenses.

It also doesn't have as good of an AF system as a 7D II or the Nikon D500.

Rumor is the Canon R7 will be announced next week and it will have the 32mp sensor from the 90D and the AF of the R5 and R6. Who knows what the price will be but that could be very good.

If you're photographing planes that are only the size of a few focus points they are just to far away to get sharp pictures. You will have a lot of atmospheric conditions that will soften and blur images.

I really couldn't answer that, I never shot with the Nikon but have friends that are Nikon shooters.

Just my opinion if you are looking for a DSLR on a budget for wildlife the D500 is the way to go. If you have the budget for mirrorless the R5 or R6 and the RF100-500 are great combos as well. I could never imagine going back to a DSLR for wildlife now, the animal eye AF has changed things so much. With 100% frame AF coverage it is so much easier to compose shots and to track all sorts of subjects.

The Nikon Z9 and the Sony A1 also seem to be very good if you have the budget for them. I have no experience with either, I do know a guy with the A1 and the Sony 200-600 and that is a nice combo for wildlife but the A1 is pricey and small for my hands.

I shot Pentax for years before moving to Canon for AF and lens selection. I owned the K50, K3, K1 and 645Z and I started with the Sigma 150-500 then added the DA*300 F4 and DA560 lenses. I moved to Canon and started with the 5DSR and EF600 F4 IS II then added a 7D II that I replaced with the 1DX II. I'm now using the R5 and RF100-500 and RF 600 F4 and about 99% of the shooting I do is wildlife.

When it comes to auto focus the Canon DSLR's were way ahead of the Pentax and now the Canon mirrorless are way ahead of the Canon DSLR's. If you're interested in wildlife I would highly suggest going with a mirrorless system that has animal eye AF it's game changing. If you want to stick with DSLR's you can't go wrong with the Nikon D500 and one of the Sigma or Tamron 150-600 lenses, that is a great combo and you can pick them up used at good prices with lots of people switching to the Z9.

I've never used the K3 III but I would think it's better than the K1 but you are limited in lens selection to really just the 150-450.

I bought my 645Z from them a couple years ago and it was great. It had a few hundred shutter count but if I never checked it I wouldn't have known it wasn't brand new. It came in the original box with all the accessories all packaged just like a new camera.
