Can I upload a DCP colour profile for the SMC-M 50mm f1.7 to Adobe Camera Raw v. 7?

User generated camera profiles should go in this folder - C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
User generated lens profiles should go in this folder - C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0\Downloaded
I think these folders are normally hidden so you would need to make them visible first.

I use the last standalone version of Lightroom and the Adobe supplied camera profiles are located here - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6\Adobe Lightroom\Resources\CameraProfiles.
Adobe lens profiles are stored here C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6\Adobe Lightroom\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0
I don't have Camera Raw installed but I think substituting Lightroom 6 with Camera Raw in the above locations will show them.

DCP profiles are camera profiles. Lens profiles are LCP files. Adobe supplied profiles are stored in different locations from user generated and downloaded profiles and of course will be different on Mac and PC. Which do you have?

Astrophotography - PentaxForums.com is worth a look. Something from the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer series of mounts might do but you will be at the limit with a heavy lens.

(tiny) HOOD of HD 20-40mm Limited: is it crappy or just fine?

Lens hoods are intended to shield from light outside the angle of view of the lens. It cannot do anything about light sources the lens can "see". Any zoom lens hood is already a compromise as it mustn't cause vignetting at the widest angle so won't be optimum for the narrowest angle of view. The tulip design is the most effective compromise for zooms.

If you really want to have the most effective lens hood then look at what the professionals use in cinematography or wildlife video camera work. Those hoods are much larger and adjustable for coverage but would be impractical for the walk-about type shooting that most amateurs do.

Mirror Lens Depth of Field

I remember seeing old reviews of mirror lenses which commented that the stated aperture was often very optimistic, usually by at least a stop. Now the same is often true for normal tele lenses but it seemed that mirror lenses were worse in this respect.

It would be much cheaper and easier to get an inexpensive knock-off GoPro type action camera. There are plenty available for less than €20 which come with a housing capable of surviving 30 metre water depth.

The MV series has a serious weakness in the re-wind lever. The lever will break off the cap. You can still re-wind film by gripping the cap and turning it but it isn't an elegant or quick solution.

Budget auto focus 50mm and 28mm crop sensor lenses

I can't find any reference to a 28mm centax lens. Can you check which lens it is?
AF might not be the solution to the problem of your blurred images. Is it truly subject movement or a slow shutter speed which is causing the problem? How are you lighting the shots?
The suggestions for the DA35 f2.4 as a crop sensor lens is a good one. It may be cheap but it is good.

Think about the resolution of your monitor, your next monitor might be much higher resolution than your current one. The 6Mp images may not look so good on a 4k screen (8Mp).

It does work on digital. The *istD, *istDS and *istDS2 can do TTL as they have the mirror box sensor which reads off the image sensor.

It will be difficult to find anyone to process that film as it uses an obsolete chemistry and the latent images will have faded badly. It might be possible to develop with B&W film chemistry to see what was on there.

Timeline of Kodak film - 1963 EKTACHROME-X film (ASA 64 / Process E-2 and E-3) replacing 32 ASA EKTACHROME. The new 64 ASA product is the first EKTACHROME film available in 135/36 format.

If Ricoh were to say the next FF camera was coming out next year it would have a chilling effect on sales of the current camera. People would either defer their purchase or be looking for substantial run-out discounts, neither outcome is good for business. Getting the timing right for launching new product isn't easy.

Pentax K mount lenses
Posted By steephill
Replies: 12

There is a possibility that a few old K mount lenses might not fit on a Pentax DSLR. There is usually a curved guard ring around the aperture lever, on some third party lenses this may be too long and will interfere with the power contacts in a DSLR camera body. If the lens fits in the mouth of the camera but won't rotate enough to lock in position that is the clue to look at the guard ring. The solution is to remove the guard ring either permanently or cut it down to size and replace.

Check the back panel of the charger. I think all Pentax chargers can take a range of input voltages, 100-240V and 50 or 60Hz frequency. If so then you will be OK use a UK cord.

Better in what way? You can get an extra half stop by going for the excellent Pentax-M 50mm f1.7. 55mm on the *istDs gives a short telephoto perspective, If you want a more normal view then look at the very common Pentax-M 28mm f2.8. There is also an f2 version but it is rarer and more expensive.

thinking about a father/son trip to Scotland in 2023 any thoughts or suggestions

When in Scotland I have only worn the kilt for weddings, usually the full Prince Charlie set-up. Oddly enough I think I have worn it more often in France than Scotland including a trip to the ballet in Paris! It is not a cheap outfit, particularly if you go for a formal evening set and a tweed jacket daytime set. It is quite an investment so I would want to be sure I would be making good use of it.

One thing to watch out for is that finding accommodation in Edinburgh during August can be very difficult and expensive. The Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival are on then creating very high demand. You will probably need to book now to stand any chance of getting somewhere in Edinburgh or you may need to look at basing yourselves in another town or city ( Stirling, Dundee, Perth or Glasgow ) and travelling in for the event.

I grew up on Loch Lomondside so I am biased in prefering the "Wild West" to the "Far East" that is Edinburgh and the east coast. I would recommend reading Raw Spirit by Iain Banks as part of your research.

I bought one which had the same issue so that means that based on a sample of two they all do it!. I couldn't free it off and sent it in for service. It had to go back to Pentax in Japan and came back clean and smooth although it is quite a tight movement - no chance of zoom creep!

Check that yours has a rear filter fitted.
