K-3 for $649 w/ free DA 50mm and flash (Black Friday)

I like the B&H deal better where you get the K3 + 50mm lens kit for $750 but instead of a free flash you get a free battery grip.

Only caveat is that ordering is closed until tomorrow evening which not a big deal...

Dear Pentax...

I will not spend another dime on Pentax gear until I can get radio wireless TTL (preferably over ad-hoc wi-fi).

Like many customers I started out with a Pentax camera which was good. Then I bought some Pentax lenses which were nice. Then I bought a Pentax flash which does TTL although I later regretted the purchase. Like many others I upgraded my camera body too. So now I have a system and I bet you want me to continue building and upgrading this system. However, you are not giving me anything half-way decent to light my shots!

Since the model I shoot is a fast moving baby who won't sit still big professional flash units are no good. Manual settings are out too since she moves around and lighting changes with every turn of her head. Hot-shoe attached flash and optical wireless suck because the flash startles her.

Now if only technology existed which would let me use a small, strategically placed, flash or two with TTL without using pulses of light to send data... Hmmm, well, if Pentax doesn't have this technology then there's no way CanNikon or third parties could have something like that... Oh, wait...

But seriously, if Pentax doesn't have a lighting solution by the time I get around to buying my next camera body I will sell off my lenses and move to a different system. This would be sad so Pentax, please give me something to work with! (And spend money on!)

I've only taken a few shots with the GF3 since it's technically my wife's but here are a couple.

I will have more after we do some traveling since the camera is perfect for that purpose.

OK, so the camera is not for me but rather for my wife. She has been talking about replacing her little Piece-of-Sh!t, I mean, Point-and-Shoot camera and I wanted to make sure she got something that wouldn't drive my mad if I wanted to use it.

I was all set on an Olympus E-PM1 but Target had a great Cyber Monday sale on the little GF3 and I pulled the trigger. So far I am really glad that I went with Panasonic over Olympus since this camera has a built-in flash and touchscreen which I am sure my wife will like.

Here's the face-off between my K7 with DA17-70 and the GF3 with kit 14-42 lens + UV filter:

replied to pm's.

please keep in mind that unlike the lens kits you see on ebay and from other retailers the filters listed here are high quality. like many other photogs out there i do not recommend putting cheap filters on expensive (or cheap for that matter) lenses.

thanks for looking!

For sale are:

1) $500 Firm. 15mm Limited AF lens with Hoya UV filter - Excellent condition. Below links to the info so I don't have to say any more about the lens :)
Pentax-DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited Reviews - DA Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Condition is excellent and I am the original owner. It had a Hoya HMC UV filter put on the minute I took the lens out of the box. The front and rear elements are in perfect condition. Metal lens cap, plastic rear cap, and pouch are included however the original cardboard box is not. Built in hood works great.

2) $35 Firm. B+W Circular Polarizing filter. 49mm thread. Got it to use with the 15mm lens and they are a great combo since this is a slim filter designed for wide angle lenses.

Prices are firm and include insured shipping and PayPal fees, if any. CONUS only, sorry folks. If lens and CPL are purchased together, which I would prefer and recommend, the total will be $525 shipped.

As much as I hate to see this gem of a limited lens go I could use the cash since I just got married and weddings are expensive...

Thanks for looking!

ditto on the 40mm. when it comes to shooting kids fast focus is crucial and focus with the 40mm is fast! this is coming from a guy who sold his 40mm to buy the sigma 30mm :)

as for buying the one lens you will keep forever, i think that's not a worthwhile goal because as you shoot more you find new things you like and don't like so your your preferences change. my advice is to embrace change.

that said, if you buy quality glass you will have no problems selling it and getting a good chunk of your investment back.

good luck!

Like most people, I would use the Eye-Fi card for wireless tethering. In fact, something I was not aware of before was the fact that I can shoot in RAW mode and have the Eye-Fi card upload the images automatically.

So how would my use of wireless tethering differ? Well, as they say in real estate - location, location, location!

I have been meaning to set up a small booth at a local market but I have noticed that most of these booths are very similar mostly consisting of a table and crates of prints of local landmarks.

My booth would differ in that I would have a laptop and monitor and I would walk around and take photos of patrons so that when they reach my booth they would see their own photos on the monitor. The customers might not necessarily buy those photos but it would be an excellent way of engaging them.

In order to achieve this wireless tethering is absolutely essential and an Eye-Fi card would help me achieve my goals.

Not a lens but I really think Pentax needs a new TC or two (1.7x or 1.4x + 2.0x) in the lineup.

Help/advise regarding Sigma 30mm

just to clear something up - the camera uses the its focus mechanism to focus on a subject. that is, it turns the focus ring on the lens to bring a subject into focus and if the lens is truly defective the camera will fail to lock focus.

however, when it comes to focusing in low light for the most part it's the camera that will have issues, not the lens.

so chances are, in dim light, at F2 or faster, the camera might have problems focusing regardless of which lens is attached. although things like focal length and distance to subject will affect focus speed.

Thanks everyone! The box is a signature Tiffany color and I think it adds rather than takes away from the shot.

As I said, the lighting is definitely a weak area and I really appreciate the suggestions. I would like to minimize the amount of time I spend doing PP so getting the lighting right is going to be my main focus. Although I think I will end up needing another flash... or two...

I know this isn't a typical jewelry shot with perfect lighting and the jewelry suspended on fishing wire but I thought it was neat nevertheless.

I know that I could touch it up more and get rid of the imperfections on the ring but I think they give it character. However, I would love to get some suggestions regarding lighting as I think that is the weakest area.

Thanks!

as you can see there are a ton of options out there. however, when i was looking i narrowed the choices down to flickr pro, smugmug, and zenfolio.

i hate the flickr UI so that was out immediately. when i compared smugmug and zenfolio i picked the site that worked best for me - and this will differ person to person.

the bottom line is that many sites give you a free option and allow you to upgrade from there so i suggest doing that. get yourself a free site and see how you like it.
also, check out other people's sites and see which ones you like best and which elements you will want to mimic.

good luck!
